3943.0. "Goodbye, Lightning" by BSS::SHUTE () Fri Aug 24 1990 18:14

My cat, Lightening, who is eight years old, is being put to sleep this
afternoon. His sugar blood count came out very high (600) which means
he has diabetes. At that level, the vet said it'd be better if we put
    him to sleep.

Lightning was 20 lbs; now he's 11 lbs. Very sluggish and won't even
play with Fluffy (other cat who is 9 years old). Fluffy knows
somethings wrong because she has been laying around Lightning--like
    she's trying to protect him.

Lightning and I are very close. We got him from the Humane Society
when he was only 9 months old. When he got his foot hurt, I nurtured
him back to health. From then on, he always came by me, slept above my
head at nights (still does), talks to me in his own way, we'd play--his
favoriate was with a string that I circled around me and he'd chase or
jump after it, etc. He'd always pounce on my stomach to play but when
I was pregnant with both my children, he'd always be careful and circle
    around me.

I'll miss him very much. Thanks for listening, cat lovers.

    Karen

So sorry to hear about Lightning, Karen. It's so sad to lose such a
good friend. This is very close to my heart right now, as I nearly
lost one of my babies recently. Try to remember the good times, and
know that you gave him a good life.

Ditto...it hurts even more when the baby's not even an "oldster". I
remember losing my "Mew" who contracted FeLV even after testing
negative and being immunized faithfully every year. I was at first
really ANGRY...WHY did this have to happen to a three-year-old??

Then I stopped and thought about it...and realized that this was not
my 'call'...someone much higher made this decision, and the comfort
that I was able to get from this was the knowledge that she had a great
three years with lot's of love...warm, soft places to lie on, good
food, and had never suffered before this damned disease struck. With a
very heavy heart we took her to our very compassionate Vet and did what
had to be done for her. I still get tears when I think of her....but
she's now up there with all the other kids who've gone along...and now
Kliban's there to play with her as well!!

      Peace.....

I'm also very sorry to hear about Lightning. I had two cats who
developed diabetes later in life, Alfie at the age of 14 1/2, and
Junie at almost 18. It hurts to lose them no matter what their age.

It sounds like you and Lightning had a very special relationship. You
gave him a good life; I'm sure he knew it and was very happy.

Again, thank you all for your kind thoughts. I got home and gave
Lightning hugs and kisses and took a few pictures of all of the family
with him, as we do on several occasions. My husband and daughter (5
1/2 years old) dropped him off at the vet. I just couldn't go so I
stayed home with my son (2 1/2 y.o.), went upstairs and cried.

My husband told me that Lightning knew that he wouldn't be coming back,
because whenever he is taken to the vet, he purrs. He looked at my
    husband with these sad eyes.

My daughter and I looked through the Cat Album with pictures of
Lightning and Fluffy. I showed my daughter your responses from Friday
and we are going to put it in his momemtum book. Printing the rest to
    take home tonight.
