3025.0. "Is cat food taxed in Mass?" by AIMVAX::LUBY (DTN 287-3204) Thu Nov 09 1989 12:10

	Hi,

I live in NH but there is a grocery store in Mass that
has food in bulk and minimal help thus it is cheaper.
I want to go there and buy a bunch of cat food, kitty
litter, and other things but I was wondering...

Do you get taxed in Massachussets on cat food?

	How about kitty litter?

I guess they consider cat food and litter a "luxury". I'm
sure the cats consider it a necessity!

Maybe they consider CATS the luxury! If only they knew....

re: .3 considering some of the recent research into Pet therapy, and
pets in Nursing homes, I think they're probably going to figure
    it out.

The tax is 5%, just so you can figure out if your still getting a
better deal by coming to MA.

You live in New Hampshire, and you're looking for tax breaks in
    Taxachusetts?!?!?!?!?

Or are you just rubbing it in!!! 8^) 8^) 8^)

Jeff, all is not gold that glitters, the grass isn't always greener!

I live in NH, but lived in taxachusetts for most of my life.
I think it was cheaper to live in MA than NH. I may not live
through the property taxes and the new increase in the tolls
on the DW Highway. It's now $ .75 each way at the toll gate.
I use 6 tokens to get back and forth to work each day. 40
tokens in a roll - you figure it out. grrrrrrrr
$3000 for property taxes isn't cheap. grrrrrrrr
Registering a car isn't cheap either. grrrrrrrr
NH may not charge a sales tax, but they get you every where else!
    grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

Okay, we best change the subject because I am *sure* that California
has NH and MA beat as far as taxes, tolls, registrations, etc. goes!
Try paying $2.00 a day to cross a bridge! How bout your car
registrations being a % of the value of your car! How bout 7 1/2%
sales tax on all non-food purchases! My property taxes are only
$2000, but what size and value house are we talking about?

Sorry for the tax frustration leak! I'm sure we all have our
gripes about what we pay our governing bodies. It just seems to me
that the high taxes we pay here are wasted by incompetent politicians,
but I won't carry it an inch further!! 8^)

After all, why should we be discussing such a depressing topic,
when this notes file is intended for discussion of a topic which makes
    us all joyful!!!!

3025.10We're getting a toll increase too!MEMIT::MISSELHORNThu Nov 09 1989 20:2112
Heard on the news this morning that they are going to raise the
toll charges 30% so there's another increase. Last month it was the
levying of meal's tax on prepared food and cold beverages at the
grocery store...things like salad bars, baked chicken, certain foods
at the deli, etc, etc. And, of course, there is the added gas tax
about to come along. (And something about a tax for taking care of
the elderly...but I'm not sure of the details, just something my dad
was rambling about.) Plus the added, annual charge for keeping the
same license plate number that you've alway had. And so on and so on.

Barbara (who would love to move to PA or VA or FL or etc, except that
there is not the same job market--nor my fiance's kids)

Excuse me, but can we *please* get back to cats?

I think my mother just told me they stopped taxing cat food in New
Jersey. Maybe we should all trek on down there to buy our food.. :)

I guess New Jersey finally realizes that cats are not a luxury, they
    are a necessity!

By the way, isn't the Tabby the "state cat" of Massachusetts? If
that's the case, then cat food should be the "state food" and not
    taxed.

Sorry about the slip, Pam!! I guess the more tax we pay, the less
    cat food we can afford!

It's funny, but I don't buy the OMH in Lowell Mass at their store
cause of the MA tax on the cat food and the long drive to get it.
