3998.0. "want cat for elder" by CSSE::CST (Isn't that a moon cat?) Thu Sep 13 1990 18:51

    Looking for suggestions, cat, or help.
    The situation is this: my grandmother is going to be 90 this February
    and I think she could benefit from having a cat. There is a home maker
    that comes in once a week who could change the litter box. As much as
    I am against it, declawed is preferable. Also she loves my blue point
    siamese because she is such a pretty "taupe" color with beautiful blue
    eyes. I don't think she would have trouble feeding it as she took
    care of my dog until a bout five years ago. From all I have read and
    also seen when I bring my cats for a visit it might be a good thing.
     My husband and I have thought this over many times and I think if the
    right cat can be found it could be quite nice. The cat would have to
    be not too old (read I want it to last longer than my grandmother as
    she would have difficulty dealing with the death), an inside cat that
    isn't afraid of elderly people , one that is quiet but comforting. It
    would be good if it growled when the doorbell rang too!! Any of you who
    have had a similar experience or cat that fits the description please
    call at dtn 276-9852 or send mail. This assignment is up for me
    tomorrow.

    Thanks for all your help,
    Karen, Ruby, Stinky, Wing (who is afraid of my grandmother, she put the
    vulcan death grip on her one day when she was scared and tried to pet
    her.)

3998.1I forgot, add thisCSSE::CSTIsn't that a moon cat?Thu Sep 13 1990 18:569
    PS.
    I forgot to add that she has her own house and lives there alone. And
    I couldn't afford to spend alot for the cat but I will see that all
    supplies are bought and that it gets good veterinary care. Plus I
    wouldn't have to bring my cats down every time I visited, there would
    already be a furface there!!! I also go down now at least once to
    every other month to check on her and do work around thehouse

3998.2Sneakers needs a new home!!!CGVAX2::MUNROEThu Sep 13 1990 19:3726
    Sneakers needs a new home...

    Sneakers is approx. 12 years old and his owner has recently moved and
    not been able to take him. He is neutered, friendly and was basically an
    indoor cat until his mother got a dog. Sneakers is grey with white
    paws and white around the mouth (like he's been in a bowl of milk).

    He is now being taken care of by a friend of mine, who feeds him. but
    unfortunatly she cant keep because she also has a dog. sneakers spends
    alot of time outside now.

    As best we know, sneakers has had all his shots.

    To find more out about sneakers or to see him..

    Please call Sheila LeBlanc @ DTN: 264-9335 or (603) 424-6109

    or write to Sheila @ CGVAX2::LEBLANC

    Thanks,

    I would visit a shelter and look for an older cat who was used to being
    an indoor cat. Probably a slightly overweight puss is a clue to
    one who is sedate enough to settle in comfortably with your
    grandmother.

3998.4cats for eldersNAVIER::BRODEURFri Sep 14 1990 00:496
    Well my aunt is 85 and lives with a black maine coon who is low
    key. But she really needs someone in there daily since the litter
    box is not within her range of motion let alone remember feeding
    at regular times. Also the cat has gotten under foot as she shuffles
    down the hall making an accident a usual worry. It seems to have
    worked so far but the weekly check would be to long in our case.
3998.5Try the adoption note #415 & local shelters...BOOVX1::MANDILEFri Sep 14 1990 12:4512
    Is your grandmother capable of daily cat care?
    Cans, bags & foil bags of catfood are hard to open,
    and bending over to pick up and refill water & food
    dishes can be difficult at her age.

    Don't forget to provide for the cat if it does outlive
    your grandmother!

    Good luck!

3998.6EVERY GRANDMOTHER NEEDS ONEWILKIE::KLATSKINFri Sep 14 1990 12:5216
    My husband's grandmother is 95 and she has a cat. She complains about
    the cat all the time (it is really still a kitten -- only about a year
    old), calling her a B*T*H but she would NEVER give that cat up for
    anything.

    She also lives alone but fortunately has her wits about her and can
    feed the cat and change its litter box.

    I think a cat would be a great idea!

    Don't forget to check the "For Adoption Ads" in this conference as well
    as the free ads in the Sunday newspaper.

    Good luck!

    I think its a wonderful idea. I think an older cat 6+ years old
    would be a good choice.

3998.8Good bye and Thank you!:^{CSSE::CSTIsn't that a moon cat?Fri Sep 14 1990 20:099
    I want to say thanks to all of you who have been so helpful!!
    Hopefully, next week I will have another assignment for a while and
    will be back before you know it. I have talked with Cin and have
    probably found the perfect little baby for Nan. I will be at the TICA
    show next Friday to see all who is there and the "little one".
    Paw pats to all!

3998.10Here I am with the results!AKOV13::FALLONTue Oct 02 1990 13:2915
    Hello everyone!

    I am back now but in AKO1. An update to this story:

    Thank you very much Cin!! My grandmother now has a little cream girl
    which she has named Goldie. They are getting along very well. When I
    talk to my grandmother she tells me how every morning when she wakes up
    she looks over on the other bed and Goldie is sleeping there and
    keeping her company. If you could hear her voice you would know how
    happy she is. I will give further updates as I can.

    Regards to all and it's great to be back!
    Karen, Ruby, Stinky, Wing, and hopefully Arthur who will be visiting
    soon.
