3957.0. "Goodbye Welly...." by SHIPS::FARROW_S (Percy, Who's Queen...) Tue Aug 28 1990 17:29

Saturday was a very sad day for my family. A gentleman had arrived to
buy a car I was selling, showing him around I noticed Welly's back legs
showing from underneath the car. Welly spent a lot of time underneath
the car in the hot weather so was not too concerned until I went to
stroke him and discovered that he was dead. He had no visible signs
of being in an accident, even if the damage was internal then I would
expect to see blood around the mouth, ears etc. We took him to the vet
and he discovered two punctures on his face which were most certainly a
    snake bite.

We have not been troubled with Adders in the past but since I have been
told that there is an abundance of them due to the mild weather we have
been having over the last couple of years.

The vet has said that this is certainly not a common occurrence and
could not give me any guidelines on whether it would have been possible
to have saved Welly if we had found him earlier.

However, this note may help other cats now that we are aware that it
can happen. I am going to have my garden checked to ensure that we do
    not have a nest.

God Bless you Welly, you had four happy years.

    Sandy,

I'm so sorry to hear of Welly. No matter how careful we are,
there are some things that we just can't anticipate. It sounds like he
    didn't suffer at least.

Damn, but we're losing a lot of furry friends this year!

What an awful thing to have happen, Sandy - poor Welly!

I don't know what else to say. I am always at a loss when I sit here
trying to think of something that would help at a time like this. My
eyes fill up and I can just imagine how you are feeling. It is so sad!

I never seem to find the 'right' words but I do hope you accept my
    deepest sympathy.

Thank you all for your kindness.

Our three other cats, Charlie (Siamese), Ben, (Burmese, a very naughty
burmese) and Rosie (beautiful Rosie) really miss him. Welly was always
the calming influence in our family, a very handsome long-haired tabby,
who loved everyone and was loved in return.

Poor Welly. I'm so sorry to hear your sad news too. I know how hard
it is to lose a cat so suddenly. Its an extra shock.

I have put Welly's name on the Silver Lining Memorial list for this
quarter. His life will be comemmorated with donations to the Morris
Animal Foundation and Tufts school of veterinary medicine.
Hope that offers some small consolation.

It's absolutely superb that there are so many genuine cat lovers around
and that so many people care. Gail a fellow cat lover and friend was
near to tears when she read your kind messages.

    Many thanks once again...

    I too am very sorry.

Are you in the UK? (If you are, I can add `snake bites' to my list of

    sandra...

we would like to add our sympathy on welly's passing. try not to feel
bad, questioning whether you "could have done anything had you spotted
it sooner". odds are probably not. that poison just spreads so fast,
poor boy prob never had a chance. but it sounds like he had a great
family life during his short time here...

    Sandra,

So sorry to hear about Welly. Please keep those beautiful memories
that you have of him close to your heart.

I know this might be hard for you but I would truly appreciate a
bit more info on the Adder. Such as...what does it look like and
where do you live. I have three kitties who always brings home
dead snakes....and I have this terrible fear now! Are Adders in
    New England???

Again...so sorry about your families loss.

3957.24Sorry for the delay in replyingSHIPS::FARROW_SPercy, Who's Queen...Wed Mar 27 1991 17:0913
I hope that this reply is not too late, I have been "off the air" for a
while. Adders are the only poisonous snake in England. They are
usually dark with a zig zag line down the back. Normally they are
timid but I guess Welly must have been to inquisitive. They are mostly
to be found where there is sandy ground, although a friend unearthed a
    nest under his patio.

We have just had another sad time, I have added another note today. We
lost Ben 4 weeks ago and Arthur yesterday... Does it never end?

Best regards for all your kind thoughts

    Sandra
