3928.0. "Territorial behaviour in the home..." by SHIPS::FARROW_S (Percy, Who's Queen...) Tue Aug 21 1990 17:47

HELP please. Charlie my 4 year old neutered Siamese has started
spraying around the house. This started when new neighbours moved in
next door with a female cat. I have tried a hormone treatment given
by the vet but this didn't stop his territorial behaviour. He gets
oodles of love and attention, always on someone's lap or bed!. He
also gets on extremely well with our other 3 cats and 2 dogs.

We all love him dearly but this antisocial behaviour is beginning to
not only become a health hazard (he is not particular as to what or
where he asserts his manhood) but also expensive, velvet curtains are
rather expensive to have cleaned and not to mention SMELLY!.

The vet said that he has had to have cats put to sleep in the past for
this behaviour as it can be rather difficult to treat. We love Charlie
so this is out of the question but I am beginning to think that perhaps
another home without any other cats, where Charlie does not feel
threatened, may be the only answer, unless of course anyone else has
experienced this problem and found a cure.

    Many thanks in anticipation.

The first thing to do is be sure Charlie doesn't have a urinary tract
infection. Has he actually been examined by thge vet for this? This
often causes spraying (and after its treated you will still need to
correct the habit which has developed.)

There are a bunch of notes in here about spraying. Also, note that
pet stores sell products like Nature's Miracle that will remove pet
    urine smells.

Yes, Charlie has been examined for any urine infection. Thank you for
your advice with regard to products that may remove the smell.

I will search through for any reference on spraying.

In the short term the only solution may be confinement during the
day when you can't supervise him. That will also help reinforce
    litterbox training.

How long has he been on the ovaban? It may take a few weeks for
it to have much effect, plus you may have to combine it with some
other training. I suggest keeping a spraybottle handy and when
you see him start to spray, let him have it.

Be very careful not to scold him and then throw him in his litter
box - or to scold or squirt him anywhere near the box as he may
associate the scolding with the litterbox.

We still have an occasional probably with Dundee but things are far
better than they were. Try increasing the number of litter boxes
and be sure you're using a litter you know he likes.

I entered an entire pamphlet worth of info that I picked up on this
problem. I'm not sure of the note, but check the keywords.
      And good luck

I have looked at a couple of places for Nature's Miracle (including my
vet) and have had no luck finding it. Can anyone tell me where I might
be able to get this product? I live in N.H. near Manchester but also
frequently visit the Burlington, Chelmsford area of M.A.

    Thanks in advance.

My latest addition was spraying off and on (neutered at 3yrs) after
we trapped him. We had him on Chlortrimetron for a couple of months
and he seems to have stoped. But about the same time he stoped our
down celar cat ( also an incurable spayer) died. So right now I'm
not sure if it was medication or the fact that he couldn't smell
    the other cat around.

    Re: Nature's Miracle

Try calling some pet shops to see if they have it in stock (via
the yellowpages). If not, they likely carry some similar product.

re: .7 Isn't Chlortrimetron an antihistamine? I would suspect that
the death of the incurable sprayer had more to do with the improvement.
    We had a similar experience.

    Jo Ann -

Naturese Miracle is sold at the Blue Seal feed store on Canal street
    in Nashua.

Also there will be a TICA show in Nashua in September, towards the end
of the month, (help some one) they will have all kinds of treatment
stuff for rugs/floor, furniute etc. Also Kmart has an odor stain
remover called "OUT". It works great. It's somewhere's around $4.00
a bottle and you mix it 1/2 and 1/2 with water. When I emptied the
first bottle I bought I used that to make the next mixture in and just
squirt it on the spot when I need it. It works great for other kinds of
spots on the carpet. Food type and dirt.

    	     weekends as the horse shows)

BTW, when is the cat show time frame anyway?

    Hi Cin,

I had a feeling after I wrote that, that someone would be asking for
    clarification!!

I am only entered in the CFF show, but will be spectating at TICA on
Saturday, 9/22. Limited finances did not allow me to enter both.

    Will see you there!!
