3924.0. "Welcome SOPHIE! Need Help...TOOTS & TEMPERAMENT!!" by SWAM2::SZAFIRSKI_LO () Mon Aug 20 1990 17:50

    Hi Everyone!

First, I want to say thank you for all the great names for the my
sisters kitty who is "ALL EARS". My sister really enjoyed all the
replys I read to her. Unfortunately, she got hooked on the idea of
finding a Human name for the little girl.......

    ....So please welcome SOPHIE!

Now a quick two questions my sister has and is very distraught over:

    1. Julie has a 2 year old outdoor/indoor cat named Mooshie, I believe
she is a Manx, no tail. Sophie is eight weeks old and has only
been a part of the household for a little over a week. Mooshie is
hating every minute of the new arrival and is acting out feelings
on the verge of wanting to kill the little tyke! I told Julie it
takes some time, but she is having a hard time being the referee.

I wanted to know if there is anything Julie can be doing to help
the two adapt to eachother....other than TIME! Mooshie keeps on
growling loud enough for Julie to think she is possessed and when
shes not doing that, well she finds enough time to breath inbetween
her hissing and spitting. Of course, Sophie is not the least bit
intimidated by this ferocious beast...arn't kitten great!

    2. Sophie is on dry kitten chow. Julie says that this little girl
toots ALL DAY LONG. My sister has had many cats in her life and
never has she had one that gives off gas 24 hours long. Outside
of the kitten chow and water, she is not given Sophie any gourmet
treats and is quite baffled where all this activity is coming from.

Thanks In Advance for your feline advice!

IGNORE THE RACKET!!! If the cat thinks that "mom" will get rid of the kitten
if the protest is loud enough...the protest will continue. I strongly suggest
ignoring the racket as much as possible...and using a spray bottle with
a long range to squirt Mooshie when a little peace and quiet is needed. Mooshie
won't like being sprayed and will manage to connect the spray with the growling
quick enough. Time will make friends between the two...but the time can be
much longer than expected....patience.

Sophie can be having problems with the brand of food...try a premium brand
of kitten food or another brand (Science Diet, Iams, and several other
vendors are out there)...sometimes the supermarket brands have dyes that can
cause upset - and they have lots of bulking agents...which, on a tiny kitten,
may be too much. Generally, we also tend to overfeed kittens - and you may
want to suggest more feedings per day, and less food at each feeding. Of
course, if your sister is "free-feeding", then the kitten may be stuffing
herself and your sister may need to begin controlling the amount taken at any
one time. She should ask her vet about feeding amounts and schedules for
Sophie. And, of course, if Sophie hasn't been seen by the vet, she should
be - shots, test for FeLV, etc. are required because she has another cat
who can be infected by the kitten and/or infect the kitten.
