3921.0. "Kitty Chaperone needed...Boston to SanDiego" by BOOTES::GERRY (Home is where the Cat is) Mon Aug 20 1990 15:37

I'm looking for someone who might be going from Boston (or someplace
commutable from Fitchburg MA) to San Diego or LA who might be willing
to chaperone a 4 month old exotic shorthair kitten for me within the
    next couple of weeks.

I would be willing to pay a fee for to the chaperone plus all of the
    kitty's expenses.

Anyone know of anyone going cross country???

Nope....this one isn't going to Marlene!!! This is a little Black
Smoke female going out to my husband's sister in San Diego. I promised
her a kitten as a graduation gift, and she just moved into a place that
will allow her to have pets.

I would love to find her a chaperone, since I hate sending a baby in
    cargo.

This may be a LONG shot, but one of my customers (from Costa Mesa/
John Wayne Airport) will be out the last week in August. As a
last resort, I could ask him....he's a nice guy, but I'm not sure
    how he'd feel (he's not a DECcie).

    Let me know......Michele

I'm not sure where Costa Mesa is in reference to San Diego....don't
know my CA geography! ;-) Sue is in San Diego, and is willing to
travel to LA, is Costa Mesa closer or further than LA???

Any other ideas as to where I might post this note to get a chaperone?

Okay, I don't mean to sound dumb, but....is San Diego North or South of
LA??? And would JW be further or closer from San Diego???

I don't want to cause anyone alot of hassle....I want this to be easy.
And, like I said, I am willing to pay a fee for them to carry the
    kitty.

Is there a Travel Notes File anywhere that I might be able to post this
    in???

    Cin,

San Diego is south of LA and south of Costa Mesa. As far as I can
remember, Costa Mesa is south of LA. I think that San Diego is
a couple of hours drive from LA, so it would be a bit shorter to
    go to Costa Mesa.

Check and see if there is a local notesfile in San Diego. We have
a local Silicon Valley notesfile and that is where I usually advertize
    for chaperones.

Anyway, he didn't think it would be feasable this time, but if the
opportunity presents itself again, I should let him know.

Thanks Michele, for asking....with that many stops it probably would be
    very difficult.

3921.13WR2FOR::CORDESBRO_JOset home/cat_max=infinityWed Aug 22 1990 16:0512
    Cin,

Delta is the one I use most frequently for cargo flights. They do
the counter to counter service. It costs a bit more, I think it
will run you about $99 with tax, unless they have raised it. I
haven't shipped a cat cargo in a while.

American also has a counter to counter service. You might try
contacting them too. The last time I had to ship a cat, I couldn't
get a Delta flight, I think it was American that I used.

San Diego is almost at the border of California and Mexico. I *think*
it is a good two hours drive from LA, but it has been awhile since
I have been down there. I live in Northern California.

3921.15American was pretty goodHOTAIR::SIMONHugs Welcome Anytime!Wed Aug 22 1990 18:0012
When I moved from Boston to Albuquerque, I used American Cargo with the
cats. I also tranquilized them (I was really the one that should have
been tranquilized!). I cried in Boston after I handed them to the
airline. I paced the terminal in Dallas during our plane change,
totally stressed. I arrived in Albuquerque (one completely neurotic
human). American brought the kids out and they were all smiling...
(sure - they had drugs!). American did a good job and I think I was
the only one worse for wear. I can't remember the cost but they were
pretty good with my precious cargo.

3921.16WR2FOR::CORDESBRO_JOset home/cat_max=infinityWed Aug 22 1990 18:097
If you traveled on the plane with them, then it probably cost you
    $30 for each carrier.

BTW, American just raised it's cabin and cargo price. When traveling
with you as excess baggage, the cat now costs $50 each way.

3921.17US Air....any experiences?FACVAX::GERRYHome is where the Cat isThu Aug 23 1990 13:2721
Okay, I've gotten some information on flying my kitty, and wonder if
    anyone has any input.

The only airline that has a "same plane" flight is US Air, all the
other airlines have a plane change. The US Air flight has one 45
minute stopover in Pittsburg, but no plane change.

US Air has a counter to counter PDQ service. The kitten will need to
be at the airport 1/2 hour before the flight, and will be turned over
to the airline at the Ticket Counter, not the Baggage Terminal. The
folks at US Air told me that the animals are put on last and removed
first from the plane....usually even before the passengers. They are
hand carried if possible, or handled separately from baggage on the
little cart if the plane is too far from the terminal for walking.

The cost is $87.00 plus tax.

Anyone have any experience with US Air???

    cin

3921.18more info...FACVAX::GERRYHome is where the Cat isThu Aug 23 1990 13:298
BTW, the flight will leave Boston at 11:55 am Boston time, and arrive
in San Diego at 4:33 CA time. So that means about 8 hours for the
    little girl.

This is a daily flight, and no reservations are required.

Cin, I do believe I used USAIR for one of my 3 Ohio flights.
They only allowed cats in baggage - they took the cats over
the ticket counter, and removed them from the plane to a
separate waiting area. They told me that the animals were
placed in a climate controlled section with very little
noise - almost the same amount that would be in cabin.
The cats were fine when taken off and turned over to me.

    That's all I remember.

oh, cost 2 years ago was $30.00 each way accompanied.

3921.21I'm a bit nervous about this!FACVAX::GERRYHome is where the Cat isThu Aug 23 1990 17:1410
According to the travel dept, the only two airlines that had any
flights from Boston to San Diego with no plane change were American and
USAIR. The American flight arrived at 1:15 a.m., so I decided on the
    USAIR.

I'll try calling NW directly and see if they can give me more info.

    Thanks

Just got off the phone with Northwest, and they have no non-stop

change. I really want to avoid a plane change.
