3880.0. "cats & dog whistles" by HAMPS::PATTISON_M () Tue Aug 07 1990 15:59

I recently bought a dog whistle with the intention of trying it
out on the boys, this whistle emits a high pitched noise which is
audible to the human ear as a sort of hiss but is supposedly audible
to dogs within a range of 500 meters.

The first time I tried it out on the cats they both sat there and
looked at me as if to say "Whats with all the noise man?", so I
gave them both a choc drop, now if I use it when they are close
by they run up to me and gave me a look as if to say "O.K. so where's
the choc drop?" they are then rewarded. However when they have been
outside and out of sight and I use it they dont seem to respond,
but if I rattle a fork in their feeding bowls they soon come back.

Is this because they can't hear the whistle at a distance like dogs,
or because they are being awkward B*gg**s and will only do what
they feel like, like cats ?

Martyn,

need you ask?? Cats train their humans very quickly. The rules of cat/human
interaction are:

	1) the cat NEVER comes when the human calls unless they feel like
it or they are guarenteed of a reward that is MORE valuable than
that which is currently available. Obviously, they are not
going to sacrifice "outside" time unless they get "feeding"
	    time.

	2) the human ALWAYS responds to the cat's demands for food, attention,
or lap immediately, regardless of inconvenience.

Seriously, I think the whistle is audible to the cat (their range is approx.
the same as a dog - only probably a little more acute in the lower ranges).
Cats do hunt quite a bit by sound, as well as smell, being night hunters.

PS. I don't believe the chocolate drop is safe if any real chocolate is
included...caffine is among the toxic chemicals a cat can DIE from if
sufficient quantities are ingested and ALL chocolate has caffine. As a cat
is small, it doesn't take too much to cause illness.

The treats I was using are sold as kitty treats, but they look just
like white chocolate buttons which we get for kids over here so
we just call them choc drops.
