3775.0. "A LOVELY ENDING" by NEGD::COURTNEY () Fri Jul 06 1990 15:08

I have a tear jerker to tell all of you cat fans out there. Dont worry
this story does have a happy ending. Let me first give you a short
background on myself. I am (or was, I think my certificate ran out) a
certified Animal Care Technician in the state of Massachusetts. Before
coming to DEC I worked at various pet stores, and volunteered many late
night hours at shelters and such.

On November 28,1989 my fiancee and I moved to the Burlington area so
that I could accept my position at DEC. There had been no heat in the
apartment we rented for at least 6 weeks. We almost froze to death
that night. Early the next morning I decided to actually clean the
apt. from top to bottom. I started in the kitchen. When I got to the
refrigerator, I decided since I was being domestic to clean behind the
refrigerator. With Scotts help we moved the frig out from the wall.
Well it was there that I found a baby kitten that I almost assumed
dead. This kitten would later be named Snuggles. I just sat there and
stared for a moment, I thought that there would be no way a kitten
could survive in that atmosphere. I bent down to lift Snuggles out.
She was alive, but barly. Scott and I later estimated with the help of
the superintendant that it had to have been at least three weeks since
she had any food or water. Her being alive was a mircle. While Scott
went out to buy a cat box, food, litter, etc. I tried to get the cat
to drink some water or milk. She was just too weak. I guessed the
kitten about 12 weeks old, I was only 2 weeks off according to the vet.
14 weeks. I was crying like an idiot, I was so afraid that she was
going to die right there in front of me. With all my training I still
had a problem with that aspect. I called all my vet and ACT friends
who told me it was a lost cause. Sorry I was already attached. I took
an eye dropper out of the cabinet and fed her warm milk. She actually
started to spunk up alittle, or maybe I was just hoping she would.
Snuggles could not move a muscle, so when Scott had a bed fixed for
her, I had to carry her. It was then that I found a deep welt just
over her right shoulder. I was stricken, Who would be so mean to beat
on a poor little kitten. There was no way that Snuggles could have
gotten that welt from a fall. That night there was still no heat in
the apartment. Scott, the man who swears he hates cats who also
happens to be allergic to them brought Snuggles into bed with him.
Over the next few days no vet would touch her. So I kept feeding her
with the dropper, and mushing food. To make a long story short,
Snuggles pulled through just fine. She was originally going to live
with us, but then the landlord fumigated and she had to find other
living quarters. Snuggles now resides not in an apartment but in a
spacious house, with plenty of running space, she keeps both my parents
in stiches. Snuggles is the most playful and loveable cat anyone could
ask for. There is a warrant out for the people who resided in the
apartment before us for one of the laws steming from the crulity to
animals act. When they are caught and go to court, they are certainly
    going to hear from me.

If anyone wants a picture of the cat someone left to die behind the
frig, let me know I have thousands. Shes georgous!

Such a happy puss. But might she have gotten the welt if she fell
from the top of the fridge down behind it?

I THOUGHT OF THE CAT FALLING ALSO, HOWEVER, THE WAY THE APARTMENT IS
CONSTRUCTED THERE IS ABOUT 1 INCH 1 1/2 INCHES BETWEEN THE REFRIG AND
THE CABINETS, EVEN AS SKINNY AS SHE WAS I DONT THINK SHE COULD HAVE
FALLEN THERE. THERE IS THE DISTINCT POSSIBILY THAT SHE DID FALL,
HOWEVER FOR HER TO HAVE A WELT RIGHT THERE SHE MUST HAVE DONE SOMETHING
    QUITE STRANGE!

THANKS FOR WRITING BACK! IM GLAD TO SEE THERE ARE STILL PEOPLE WHO
    STILL CARE ABOUT CATS!

That is a wonderful story. I love happy endings and would love to
see a picture of Snuggles. Are you coming to the Feline party in
Littleton on Aug 2nd?? Please say yes.

BTW - I'm puzzled as to why no vet would give you any help. That
sounds rather cruel to me. Perhaps you can shed some light.

What a great story. We don't have a lot of happy endings to our
    stories.

(Don't read this if you are faint of heart) Could the former owners
have tried to hit her in the head, hoping it would be a fatal blow
missed and she crawed off behind the frig?

I do hope these people get caught and punishment metered out to fit
the circumstances, and it's told on TV and in the newspapers.

Hope to see you at the feliners get together.

Or perhaps the welt could have been caused by the elements of the
fridge. Maybe she got too close to the working parts, or something
like that. Or maybe she was pinned in there until you found her.

3775.8Maybe they thought she was lostPHAROS::LAURIEMon Jul 09 1990 23:069
Could the former owners have thought that the kitten got lost during
their move, as many animals do? They might have been convinced that
she got out of the apartment while they were in process of moving.

Granted, if they thought this, they should have returned and looked
for their cat. But, a 12 week kitten is pretty large, I'm not sure
I would think of looking behinda refrigerator for one (not before
    reading this, at least.)

3775.9HEART ABOVE POCKETBOOKNEGD::COURTNEYTue Jul 10 1990 12:3011
    Nancy,

At the time the vets did not want to spend what they thought was a
waist of time. No vet that I talked to thought she would live. Please
remember we are living in a place where time is money, and heaven help
you if your heart comes before your pocketbook. Unfortunately I will
be unable to attend August 2. I am getting married on the 18th and
I just cant het away!. But heres a little note or you! Snuggles will
be attending my wedding! I know that sounds strange, she is just so
much apart of Scotts and my lives. Now we just have to make sure no
    one brings their dog!!!

That reminds me of my favorite cartoon "Cat Court". The cartoon
depicts a court case, complete with a cat as the judge. The case
is that the woman wants her cat to be her maid of honor, and the
husband-to-be disagrees. The judge awards that not only will the
cat be the maid of honor, but the groom must pay for her dress and
matching shoes!! :^) :^) I have had that cartoon on my fridge
for about 7 years now. Don't even remember where I got it. I think
my nutty friend sent it to me. She sends me anything that has even
a remote link to cat's in it. :^)

A gal that bought one of my cat's had her first Birman queen in
her wedding pictures. Kayleigh was in the shots that the photographer
took at her house while she was getting ready, and then in some
posed shots too. I think that was a great idea. And, Birmans really
look nice against white satin. :^)

That cartoon (.10) is by Nicole Hollander.

It's from the "Sylvia" comic strip. She does lots of cartoons with
dogs and cats in them. The maid of honor one is one of my favorites.

She also did a whole series about people being asked questions at the
gates of Heaven about how they treated their pets, as a criterion for
admission. Things like, "Did you paint your dog's toenails? Did you
laugh at your pets when they tried to jump on the couch and missed?"

    They were hysterical.

re: .9 - Thanks for the explanation. I'm glad you stayed in there.
No doubt you have a very special relationship with your little
    patient.

You're right about heart and pocketbook. People often express
the feelings that vets should spay and neuter for free or for
very reduced rates. If a vet didn't charge the right amount
for his/her services, s/he wouldn't stay in business very long
and that wouldn't do anyone any good.
