3727.0. "mom in panic- blood in stool" by SMEGIT::ROSSI () Wed Jun 20 1990 13:54

I was very concerend this morning when I got up to see that in the
litter box my little 12 week kitten had gone very loose and their was
blood in the stool. I don't want to be too graphic but it was fresh
blood not dried like coffee grounds.

I called the vet and they said to bring a stool sample in for them to
check. Although I was in a panic, they felt it wasn't very serious.
I asked them if they wanted to see her and they said that wouldn't be
necessary. They explained that many things could cause blood in the
stool like change of diet, upsetment, and also worms. I have noticed that
her belly is rather large, but I just thought she was eating alot. She
has been going loose for a couple of days now. She was checked for
worms about 4 weeks ago and it was negitive. Is it possible that
that she now has them or that they went undetected 4 weeks ago?
She has been on the same food so I don't think that's the problem.
She seems alert and playful and acting normal.

    Please advise.

It is very possible that intestinal parasites may have gone undetected
in the previous check. Try not to worry, they will get to the bottom
    of this.

My sister had a cat that had chronic colitis. That cat had blood
in her stool all the time. They finally figured out that it was
related to her diet. She is fine now.

Sounds like it could be coccidia - I went through the same thing
with Stitch when he was about 10 weeks old - there was blood everywhere
when I went to clean the box in the morning - his tummy was also
bloated - Dr. Scott got him on medication and he was just fine almost
    immediately.

can't say I had this problem with my cats, but did with my dog.
She looked and ate well, but had picked up a parasite and had
developed a colitis condition as well. Like you, I was in a panic.
She was put on medication for a week and all is a-okay now.

    Hi Valerie,

Loki has blood in his stool every so often, especially when his
stool is loose. His vet said that sometimes the straining involved
with a loose stool/diarrhea can cause some bleeding. I know I've had
    tht happen to me too.

I was told as long as the blood was fresh, it wasn't anything
really serious (of course it should be checked, but it isn't life-
threatening as dried blood {internal bleeding} would be).

Thanks for all the info. I have an appointment on Friday with the vet.
I do think her belly is awfully big for a little kitten so I'll have
her checked for worms. Well I'm not in a state of panic anymore. I
never knew how common it was. So I'll just relax and take it easy..

Thanks guys and gals for all your help..

You've never let me down yet...

re: missing parasites in the stool.

Several months ago when I learned to associate the "round belly"
that I saw in the weymouth commons kitties with roundworm, I took
a stool sample from Jesse to the vet to be checked for worms. It
came back clean which i found impossible to believe. Jesse very
obediently threw up two round worms the following morning!
