3724.0. "Need Name of Animal Shelter" by BIZNIS::BERSANI () Tue Jun 19 1990 13:50

    Does anyone know the name of the cat shelter that does not put
    the animals to sleep? I have a sweet outside cat that I am
    unable to keep any longer. Between traveling with work and
    personal time Charlie needs a home elsewhere. Would appreciate
    any help anyone can give me. Or do you know anyone who has a
    farm? Thanks in advance for your help.

3724.1No luck at animal sheltersCST5::CASTIGLIONETue Jun 19 1990 14:0614
	Linda,

	I am in a similar situation. I called all the animal shelters
	in the Milford-Framingham area and they are all full and cannot
	take any more cats. I then called the Animal Rescue League
	in Worcester and they said that they would take a cat (for
	a $3 fee) but that they would probably put them to sleep as
	they are full also.

	If you do find out anything though, could you let me know as
	well. I was considering bringing her to a farm too ... I
	would rather do that than bring her to the rescue league.

    In Salem Massachusetts there is a place called Northeast Animal
    Shelter where they do not put animals to sleep.

3724.3Where are you located?DEMON::MURPHYTue Jun 19 1990 16:4219
You might check the Shelter note someplace in Feline. Anyone know the
note #?

Also, where are you located? Kitty Angels in Tyngsboro, MA and Adopt_A_Cat
in Concord, MA are no kill cat shelters. Derry Humane Society, Derry, NH
run by volunteers is also no-kill.

3724.4Sterling Animal ShelterCST5::CASTIGLIONETue Jun 19 1990 18:4424
	I have some more info regarding animal shelters.

	I just spoke with the Sterling Animal Shelter and they
	do take cats and do have room for them at this point.

	The ask for a donation of $35-45 and food/kitty litter supply
	for one week when you bring them in.

	They're open 8-4, 7 days/week. They ask that you bring
	the cat in my 3:00.

	Their phone # is 422-8585.

	They said that they keep the cats for 30 days and then
	may make the decision to put them to sleep but that
	if you choose the option to support the cat until it is
	"adopted", that will not happen.

	I'm still hoping to find my cat a home but at least this
	is a reasonable option now.

3724.6Northeast Animal ShelterBIZNIS::BERSANIWed Jun 20 1990 13:424
    Jean, Northeast Animal Shelter in Salem was referred to me. They do
    not put the animals to sleep. Good luck, I'm still trying for other
    options for my sweet Charlie.

    I know there has been alot of "bad press" regarding the Sterling Animal
    Shelter, but I will tell you about my experience with them.

    About 2 years ago, I had a friend who wanted to adopt a cat. So, I
    went with him to the Sterling Shelter....This was in the late spring
    time, so would be a similar time to now.

    At that point, they had about 20 to 25 adult cats, and 1 litter of
    kittens. The cats are housed in a large, bright, exceptionally clean
    room. There are several cages in the room for new comers, but once the
    cats are there for a week or so, they are allowed free run of the room.

    My friend adopted a Red Tabby and White male cat about 3 years old. He
    was a sweet fellow, and seemed very mellow....considering that this cat
    was going to be a companion for his 3 year old daughter, we didn't want
    one that was hyper or agressive. The woman at the shelter was estatic
    that we adopted him because he had been there the longest....he had
    been there 2 1/2 weeks.
