| Hi Michele. No, I have never heard of the organization you are
referring to but I live in Leominster and will see what I can find out.
In order to be a legitimate non-profit organization (receiving State,
local or Federal funds) you have to be given a Federal and State
501(c)3 number. This enables the organization to be legally 'non-
profit' and not pay taxes. To apply for a non-profit status an
organization can call the IRS and ask for a specific form(s) to fill
out. It takes approximately a year (arrgh!) but I have seen some
organizations receive their temporary number in as little as 6 weeks.
The good thing about becoming non-profit is the ability for employees,
not just Digital employees, to benefit from their company's Matching
Gift Program. There are about a hundred Matching Gift companies
in New England - Digital matches dollar-for-dollar - but some match 2
for 1 and some even 3-1. Also, monies can be donated from companies/
corporations and businesses - which enable the non-profit to stay alive.
Obviously any donations made by private U.S. citizens - to a legal
non-profit - can write that donation off on their own income taxes.
It is a long and involved process - but if it is a cause that someone
really wants to pursue - the length of time, the red tape and filling
out the forms is all worth while.
I have been doing a lot of thinking about 'homeless' animals and would
love to see the problem solved...even if it is just in Leominster.
Although some people feel that just one person can't change the
world...I disagree. It just takes that ONE person to get the ball
rolling.
I am willing to donate time - I am just now investigating some Humane
Societies and trying to think of an idea that can help the situation.
I guess it would be best to discuss that in another note.

| Michele...yes I plan on giving Pat a call today. I am going to call
directory assistance for the number. My car 'died' awhile ago, but it
should be up and running this week-end!
My daughter works for a small retirement home in Leominster and they
have been discussing the adopt-a-grandparent program with the local
schools. There was a story about a Seattle (I think) Washington couple
(on a cable channel this week-end...CNN I think) that combined the eldery
housing/day care children situation - very successfully, I might add, and
there is a possibility that other cities/states will follow suit. They
also included cats as part of the occupants of this home.
They found that giving the elderly a purpose to get up in the morning -
i.e. kids, cats - had a profound effect on their well-being and health.
Also, children being loved by these people gave them a real insight and
nurturing. They found, too, that seeing the elderly in wheel-chairs at
a very young age made the children more sensitive to handicapped people
outside the home. And, having pets to care for and talk to - gave ALL
the serence, peaceful and gentleness we all need. They found that
the blood pressure of the older folks went down significantly as well.
I have also heard that some prisons are allowing cats....to give the
inmates something to take care of.
I could really go on and on about all of this...sorry! I am hoping if
I talk about his more - either myself or somebody else will come up
with a brilliant idea.

| I just got off the phone with Pat Brody - what a lovely person she is.
She said she could use all the help she can get and here is some of
things she needs:
Towels blankets
sheets tablecloths
pillows trash bags (she usually buys them from DeMoulas
pillow cases old afghans (for winter)
Someone to do laundry once a week. Only two loads...one for the
healthy cats and one for the cats with leukemia.
At present she has 60 healthy cats and 12 sick ones...
You can sponsor a cat for $10.00 a month and she will send you pictures
of him/her regularly.
Perhaps someone would like to volunteer typing up her newsletter and
printing out copies for her. She mails out the newsletter 4 times a
year.
...and someone could donate the stamps to mail them out. Don't know
how many but can find out.
She has a running bill with Dr. Mulcahy's office in Leominster -
perhaps some people would consider sending in some money (to the vet)
to help with the bills.
Donate food! She buys 'Whiskers' (sp?) and Friskies....and she also
needs someone to go buy the food once a week.
Someone to help clean out litter boxes and cages....
She has requests from local Nursing homes to bring 4/5 cats to visit
some of the residents...on a weekly basis. However she can't always do
that because she is tied to the place taking care of the little
furfaces) How wonderful of those loving people to want cats come visit
them! Perhaps I could talk to the administrator of some of them to see
if they would consider adopting a few cats permanently.
To adopt a cat - it is $20 and they have all their shots and are
tested for leukemia. It is $15 to adopt a kitten.
She found out that Federal Housing apartments are now allowing cats in
the buildings - so that is another area I might try to cover.
Pat Brody lives off High Rock Road in Fitchburg - right next door to
the dog officer (who has 20 puppies by the way that are ready to be
adopted) and her phone number (508) 342-2143.
I have told her that I will volunteer Saturday's - my daughter is going
to help out too! Even if some of you can't 'physically' get there to
help do laundry, shop, clean, visit....maybe some money to the vet to
help defray medical bills...or pay for some food or donate some items
and/or money.
She has a heart of gold and has devoted her life to these animals.
What a wonderful soul!

| Pat is not the only one with a heart of gold. Marilyn, you are
terrific. I only wish that I lived closer and could help out the way
that you will be doing. I would love to sponsor a cat. Ten dollars a
month is pocket change! I would also like to donate some food and
blankets and other items that were mentioned. I think that Michele has
a great idea in that we sponsor a kitty through SLM. One thing that we
all must keep in mind is that there is a possibility that Pat's illness
could impair her ablility to care of these animals. That would be a
real heartbreak for all of us. We should probably do what I did for
Sam and Joe, that is, post pictures and a little story about each
kitty. You would be surprised at the respones.
Marilyn, if you are going over there this weekend, could I give you
some $ or food to bring with you??
And I said that I would never get involved in this again. Who was I
kidding?

| Oh Arlene, I am hooked.
Pat told me that her Aunt had died and left her a house, which she
rents out...I think that is where she is getting most of her extra
money. Her mother is living with her off High Rock Road. I didn't get
into her 'illness' - didn't want to pry - but just talking to her and
seeing what she is doing - I want to help.
This woman (and I am sure there are MANY men/woman out there) has made
these homeless animals her life. She must not have much of a social
life but has made a commitment to a very worthwhile cause. That in
itself - is to be commended.
I know that I have - in the past - said 'I would love to help ' or
'I want to get involved' - but then get busy with other things and let
it go. Having adopted Sam - and seeing for myself (firsthand) that
I can help has made me more aware of the plight of these homeless and
defenseless animals.
I have a lot of free time - so why not put it to good use.
I am sure Pat would LOVE and appreciate anything you can give her - yes
I plan on going over there Saturday or Sunday - whichever is more
convenient for her. I want to meet her in person and talk to all the
cats.
She said that going to a laundromat would be easier - seeing that a lot
of fur could clog a regular house drain - so if I can - plan on doing
that for her....if not, then I go grocery shopping once a week anyway -
why not pick up some stuff for her as well.
In making people aware of her place and her valiant efforts to take
care of these cats - then if (God forbid) anything were to happen to
her - somebody could take over and carry on. Don't mean to get morbid
here...but she is trying so hard and sounds like she can use all the
help she can get.
Hey, what are friends for! This time I am putting my money where my
mouth is.

P.S. Sam is wonderful. All three cats are drinking out of the
same bowl - Otis and Sam eat together and sleep together...
it's working out beautifully. I think Otis and Tiff sense
that Sam is old and frail - and are getting to be VERY
protective of him. Sam is NOT aggressive - will kiss me in
the morning before looking for food and is so affectionate.

Wow...what a wonderful woman!!!
I do not have much time to offer (new home owner) but you can bet
that a check will be in the mail this week and possibly once a
month. I will also start saving old blankets, pillows, sheets
etc. and possibly buy some kitty food for her. I have always sent
money to other Animal Shelters...but to think I can help someome
in my own area...is wonderful.
Please keep us posted...when you go visit!! Tell her she is a saint
and we'll get her as much support as possible.

You are so special to help out this way. In talking with Pat I
stressed the fact that there would be a lot of people that would love
to help - but couldn't 'physically' come in to do some of the laborious
and tedious work (cleaning cat boxes, etc.) so that if we could help
out monitarily or with some of the necessities it takes to run the
place - perhaps that would ease the situation for her.
Also, I realize there are other wonderful shelters, homes, societies
that are in desparate need of help. If anyone out there can't help
this particular shelter - or it is not in your area - then maybe you
could consider donating some of the items mentioned in this topic to
the shelter nearest you.

| I agree, you folks are great. Bless those husbands too that are so
supportive.
I know of one shelter, Kitty Angels run by Joan Abbott who ALWAYS seems
to need, money, food, bedding, litter, etc.
They are a no kill shelter, and Joan has ended up with many a cat
or kitten in her house that needs special attention or love.
She is a great person, who must work for a living during the day
but the animals don't suffer.
If anyone lives near the Tyngsboro area that is where Kitty Angels
is located.
Many of you folks have seen Joan at the cat shows with her cages full
of cats needing homes. Nice person who deserves some more help.

| re: Silver Lining Memorial - All I need is a request from someone
who has lost a cat or dog this past quarter to make Pat Brody a

re: sponsoring a cat via the SLM - it would be possible, but the
donations would be sent once a quarter not monthly. I'm sure that
would be acceptable to Pat :-)
re: Other types of help to other organizations - I think all of us
could spare some of the things these places need. What we need is
coordinators in different locations to collect the donations and
take them to the shelters. If you know of a shelter in your area
that needs towels, blankets etc then make it public here and also
make your location known. Then those of us who want to donate will
bring things to you.
For example - Lenora Palmer works in the MR01 library and also
works with Framingham humane. If anyone wants to make donations
to those folks contact her at DLNVAX::PALMER.
Now is anyone located in the MRO cluster who can take things to
Pat Brody. I have some old towels and an old afghan that she
can have.

First, let me thank Lennice for stopping by yesterday to drop off some
cat food for Pat Brody. I know that Pat will be thrilled. I am
calling Pat this morning to let her know what is going on and that I
will be going to the shelter tomorrow to deliver the goods.
I work in Stow and would be glad to be the contact for this facility
to help Pat Brody in Fitchburg. I am aware of, but know nothing
about, a shelter in Lancaster...but will find out. Does anyone know a
contact person that I can call/write? I live in Leominster
so going to Fitchburg and Lancaster once a week in nothing for me.
If people can somehow coordinate getting 'goodies' to me here at
Stow - then I can make the deliveries.
Thanks so much for everyone's help, ideas and generosity. Makes a
person feel good inside to know that there are loving and caring
people out there.

| No, unfortunately she doesn't have the 501(3) number that you need in
order to receive State and Federal funds...as well as Matching Gift
funds. I will discuss it further with her, but I somehow got the
feeling that she doesn't want the hassle of filling out all the forms.
And, believe me, there are a lot of forms.
I tried to tell her that Digital would match any funds made by our
employees, as well as donors that contribute who work for other
matching gift companies...but it didn't seem to matter to her.
Going to see her tomorrow - with all the boxes and money - hey, you
guys are great, and I thank you from the bottom of my heart.

| Dear friends:
I went to see Pat Brody Saturday and I got to meet her and her wonderful
'family' of cats. I have never seen so many BEAUTIFUL cats in my life.
Really impressive.
Anyway, Pat says 'thank you' to all that are helping and is grateful
for anything anyone can do/give.
Some things that she needs:
Friskies buffet cat food (no fish variety, please)
Purina cat chow
Summer bedding (cotton - so the fabric 'breathes')
Old cookies sheets (that's how she feeds the cats)
Wiskers' cat food
Trash bags
She goes through 6 cases of wet food and 2 large bags of dry food
weekly.
She also wants to know if some person could help her repair a leaky
roof. The dwelling (shelter) is small and in looking at it I assume
that it would take someone 1/2 a day to fix this. Right now it's
a pain - but in the winter moisture collects, freezes and is rotting
what wood there is. I would guess this a 'first' priority issue for
her. She is not physically capable of fixing this. Also, some
chicken wire needs to be replaced over one of the pens (the garden)
where the cats can be enclosed but get benefit of sun and fresh
air. In the winter she drapes a tarp over it to keep snow from
the area.
Tracey and I saw about a dozen cats we wanted to take home with
us....just beautiful animals.
And, if anyone is contemplating adding to their 'family' - but is
wondering if your cat (or two cats - or three cats) will accept
a new 'furface'......take heart in knowing that those 60 cats
get along fabulously - no problems. So, if 60 can live together
in harmony - what is a couple more?
Thanks again for all your support and help - God, you should see
some of those cats. They are so precious!

You could send the check to me - but if you send it to her directly
then she will just get it that much faster.
She is VERY appreciative and I think gives her a morale boost and makes
it easier to accept the many cats that are unwanted. She has quite a
few cats that were found by landlords...in apartments - when tenants
moved on. One cat, a beautiful white female, had been stranded in an
empty apartment (by its owners) for a week before the landlord went in
to clean for the next tenant and found her. No wonder some landlords
are tightening up and not allowing tenants to own pets. There is
always two sides to every story.
Anyhoo....she loves them all - they all have names - and their own
distinct personality.

mind is how well adjusted each cat is - they all play, sleep,

I just wanted to let you know that I spoke with one of the ladies
from the shelter regarding any donations and she said that we can
always use:
Liquid bleach
Paper plates (the small kind, like for desserts and the paper ones
are prefered rather than the plastic kind)
Cat litter
Cat food of any kind (including cat food tuna and mackeral varieties
or anything else smelly to encourage unhappy cats to eat)
Towels and blankets (of course)
I'll let you know if I hear that we need anything else. Thanks again!

One of the things I do is, whenever we go to the flea market or any
yard sales, I always look for old blankets, sheets, pillow cases, baby
diapers, etc. Those usually make good donations to shelters or animal
hositals. I waite until there's a laundry basket full wash and dry them
and then take them to the receipient!

| I wonder if someone with the "legalese" kind of mind to help Pat
qualify for those Tax ID numbers would make her more receptive to
trying to get one? She is missing out on extra help from those
who can have matching gifts with their donations!
Perhaps someone helping her to complete the somewhat intimidating
forms would encourage her to apply? (I have hard enuf time trying
to fill out 1040EZ... :/ )

| In reference to filing for a 501(c)3 status....easier said than done!
Not only do you have to fill out forms - you also have to state your
purpose and submit a form of goals. Also, a Board of Directors
has to be selected and estimated taxes are to be filed every 3
months.
None of this is difficult - but it is cumbersome and involved.
The reason a Board of Directors has to be selected is so that not just
one person is running the whole operation - that votes are taken and
there has to be an 'odd' number of people - in order to break a tie in
a decision making vote.
If you want to make a donation - lets say - to 'Save the Children'
but you never heard about it - you can write to that non-profit
organization and request it's letter of purpose and goals. This is to
be provided - free of charge to you so that you can decide whether or
not you chose to donate money to this organization.
There is a LOT of room for fraud in non-profit organizations - so
there is a lot of investigating and a lot of red-tape involved. If
someone REALLY wants the benefits of having a 501(c)3 status - then
they go through all the proper channels in order to qualify.
I explained that to Pat - but she didn't want to go through the hassle.
I, too, wish she had that non-profit status because she could be
doubling the money she receives plus be qualified to receive corporate
donations...but it is her choice.

| Well, I went to help Pat out for a few hours on Saturday, cleaning
ears. I was very impressed with the overall health of the cats, and
their apparent good nature. Pat really does love the cats.
BUT....I did have a problem with the was the FelV positive cats were
being housed in respect to the FelV negative cats. I was not convinced
at all that there was no exposure from the positive to the negative
cats. For this reason, alone, I'ld be cautious about either fostering
or adopting one of the negative cats without another blood test, and
isolation for 90 days.

| I received the most beautiful letter from Pat Brody thanking me
for my donation. She was very thankful and appreciative for
everything we have done for her. I read this letter and cried all
the way through it because this lady is one heck of a wonderful
person. As you are aware, Pat does have cancer...they
have just found a few more tumors in her liver and bowels and her
first chemo treatment was Friday. I spoke to her Mom on Saturday
and she said Pat was not feeling too good.
I know that many of you have documented the items Pat needs to
support her Purr-Fect Cat_Tel shelter, and I think she needs more
help now then she ever did before. But most of all Pat needs
your prayers.
I keep thinking to myself "God would never take away this wonderful
person who has given her life to save the kitties.
Please pray for her..
