3680.0. "Odd-shaped cat?" by DECWET::GIRDLER () Thu Jun 07 1990 16:40

I have a question about my new cat, Raisin. She was a stray that I adopted from
the humane society 2 weeks ago.

She is shaped like she is ready to give birth to about 8 babies any day now.
She did have a litter this spring (she was living outdoors at an apartment
complex), and was spayed at the humane society about a month ago. She also had
worms, and I am giving her a second set of worm medicine now (the vet didn't
re-test her, but wanted me to re-medicate her because she lived outside for
quite a while). The vet isn't too concerned about her shape, says it is
definitely not fat (she is pretty skinny otherwise). She also says that
Raisin is too young (about a year old) to worry about it being a tumor.
Raisin is also on antibiotics for a URI, and is just about totally over that.
She has a normal appetite, and seems fairly healthy otherwise.

Do any of you have any experience with odd shaped cats, or what this could
be, or if I should be worrying about it? Everyone that meets her says "Your
cat is very pregnant". But she isn't!!!

    Have you had her into the vet recently? She may have some fluid
    built up in the peritoneal cavity (abdommen). Could be worms, maybe
    he isn't treating her for the right kind of worms. If the vet hasn't
    seen her recently, take her in again and be sure to tell him that
    this is really worrying you.

3680.3OK, I will ask again at the next visit...DECWET::GIRDLERThu Jun 07 1990 17:5410
    I have had her in 3 times the past 2 weeks, the first for her 'well'
    check-up (and a leukemia shot), then a week later for URI, then a week
    later for URI check-up. I have to take her in next week for 2nd leuk
    and URI checkup again, so I will ask about it again. Her poop is still
    very stinky after 2 sets of worming medication, so maybe it is the
    wrong kind of worm stuff... the vet has starting charging me 1/2 price
    for office visits, with adopting 2 strays in 3 months, I think I have
    been there 10 times...

3680.4Coccydia?RHODES::GREENECatmax = Catmax + 1Fri Jun 08 1990 16:317
    If the stools are "very stinky" ask the vet to check for coccydia.
    (It can be difficult to find, sometimes.) That could make the
    cat get very skinny or bloated, depending upon the response to the
    parasite. (Medication is then given daily for about 2 weeks.)

    Good luck,

    That is what I was thinking of too, Pennie. I have dealt with coccidia
    before, it is hard for them to find it in the stool sample sometimes.
    I think that the sample has to be really fresh. It took us several
    tries to get the diagnosis, but once the medication was started,
    the kittens started doing much better. They had diarrhea and bloating
    from it. We treated them with Albon.

3680.6Thanks...DECWET::GIRDLERFri Jun 08 1990 17:365
    OK, thanks. I have an 8:00 AM appointment next Wed. for 2nd leuk shot, I
    will get up and feed them early, so I can get a fresh stool sample (she
    usually goes shortly after breakfast).

3680.7Don't leave home without it!RHODES::GREENECatmax = Catmax + 1Fri Jun 08 1990 19:0011
    Refrigerate the stool sample until you leave home (and then,
    "don't leave home without it" ;-)

    You might want to have a "back-up stool" from the day before
    (also refrigerated) in case your guys decide to have a poop
    boycott in honor of the vet's visit!

    Um, warn other members of the family what is in the baggie-
    inside-the-plain-brown-wrapper in the fridge...yummy!   gaggggg.

    If she's on antibiotics it is also possible that she's bloated due
    to gas. Many antibiotics kill the bacteria that normally lives in
    the intestine and aids in digestion. I know that Bob gets diarrea
    EVERY time he's on antibiotics. Feeding yogurt with active cultures
    helps because it replaces the bacteria. You obviously have to keep
    this up until after the cat is off the antibiotic because the newly
    introduced bacteria won't survive long due to the antibiotic.

    Best to discuss it with your vet and check for worms too.

    BTW - Bob has been wormed 4 times and treated for coccidia and he still
    has the stinkiest (OH MY GAWD BOB...ARE YOU TRYING TO KILL US!) poops
    I've ever smelled.

3680.10the 'poop' is at the vet'sDECWET::GIRDLERWed Jun 13 1990 20:008
    I took Raisin's sample to the vet this morning (thanks for the tip on
    saving last nights, of course she didn;t go this morning, but I popped
    last night's in the fridge as soon as I saw her go). The vet said she
    thought they had already checked her, but I told her that it was the
    humane society that checked her. So she said of course, anything that
    I wanted to do was fine. Just waiting to hear now...

3680.11Well it is roundworms...DECWET::GIRDLERMon Jun 18 1990 18:4213
    Well, it turns out that Raisin has round worms. This is after already
    worming her twice. The vet thinks that Snickers probably picked them up
    from the litterbox, and gave them back to her. I have to worm both of
    them.
    (Of course, the vet told me to separate them for a couple of weeks when I
    first got Raisin, but that lasted about 30 minutes, Snickers would have
    eaten thru the door to get at his new buddy. So she has now given him
    URI and worms.)
    And I promised Raisin when I got done with the last worm medicine that
    I wouldn't give her anymore. Sigh. She probably won't remember my
    promise tho.

3680.12Oh no...WILKIE::IVESMon Jun 18 1990 20:199
    Drat those lousy round worms. Only thing worse is HOOK WORMS. They
    are ALMOST impossible to rid of.

    I'm sure Snickers won't remember your promise but when the worms are
    gone both will feel so much better and so will you.

    Grit your teeth and get out those pills....
