3612.0. "cat odor in vacuum cleaner!" by CSCOA3::MCFARLAND_D (alferetter bound) Sun May 20 1990 18:50

    i didn't do a keyword or title search on this one, cuz i *know* that no
    one else would be stoopid enuf to have done this. but maybe you can make
    some suggestions...

    i was rushing to clean up the house before company came, and i was
    vacuuming. i went into the cats' room (yes, they have their own room in
    the new house, complete with cat condo and the old living room
    furniture that they love to curl up on.)

    anyhoo, i saw some litter on the carpet, and i should have picked it
    up, but i was in a hurry and i tried to suck it up with the vacuum.
    well, it was not dry carpet! one of the hellions had missed the box,
    so i ended up with litter and cat liquid in the vac! fortunately, i
    had already vacuumed the rest of the house, so i turned off the vac and
    stashed it in the garage for later cleaning.

    i removed the vac bag and trashed it. i disassembled the vac as best
    as i know how and cleaned the partz with a cloth with nature's miracle.
    i let it sit for a few days, reassembled vac, attached new bag, but the
    vac still has that gawd-awful smell when i turn it on. i have not used
    the vacuum on the carpet since (brand new carpet in my new house!), but
    i soon must clean again.

    does anyone have any sugestions? IMHO, nature's miracle did not do
    that great a job getting the smell out of the carpet near the cat box.
    what are other products? specifically, what can i do to the vacuum
    cleaner--other than getting a new one? sorry to be so long-winded, but
    i am ashamed to mention this to anyone else. i feel sooooooo dumb!!!

3612.1OUT, OUT OUT damn spot..WILKIE::IVESMon May 21 1990 14:239
    I would use LOVE MY CARPET on the carpet, (we use this every week) and
    it makes the WHOLE house smell nice and the stored vac smells good too,
    or use OUT which is available at Kmart. It's like $4.00 a bottle. Use
    this on your carpet and on the vac. OUT really does neuturalize the
    urnine smell. (I also use it to clean my litter boxes.)

    Let us know how you make out.

3612.3Try "scented carpet flakes"CSC32::K_KINNEYMon May 21 1990 21:1916

    	I have another suggestion for you. When I go to the mall,
    	I pass by these lovely shops with all the nice smells
    	(VERY heavy and make me sneeze sometimes) but I pop in
    	there and purchase little packets of "carpet flakes" that
    	smell like flowers or spice or whatever you like. You take
    	them home and sprinkle them on your carpeting and then you
    	vacuum. What happens is the nice smell gets into your carpet
    	and it also spreads around your room as the air pulls through
    	the bag. Moreover, it lives in your vacuum cleaner bag in your
    	storage area and that smells nice too. We got some that smells
    	like apples and it is really quite pleasant.

    Um... What's OUT??
3612.5the hose or the filter the culprits?SMEGIT::BALLAMTue May 22 1990 18:0710
    How about vacuuming up some baking soda? I wonder if that would
    absorb some of the odor for you. Though, it sounds like the odor
    may be living in the plastic hose, ya think? If so, maybe swishing
    some strong deoderizer through it...being careful if it has any
    electric wiring running through it. Might be worth it to
    purchase a new hose.

    Just my 1.34 cents.

3612.6Great "stuff"WOODRO::IVESTue May 22 1990 18:099
    It's the name of a company. They make shampoos/conditioners and
    a cleaner to neutralize spots "left" by animals. It take the
    smell out and the spot too.

    Our litter boxes have never been so "sweet" smelling until I started
    to use this. The cats seem to like the fragrance also.

3612.7no hose?CSCOA5::MCFARLAND_Dalferetter boundTue May 22 1990 18:3210

    thanx for all the great suggestions. the "sprinkles" sound like
    potpourri, of a sort, so i am gonna look for that.

    re: -.2 the vac is an upright. i don't think there is a hose. (i
    mean i do have a hose that can be used as an attachment, but it wasn't
    on the vac at the time...)

    speaking of vacuuming,

    Each time I change the bag, I squeeze 'some' flea powder into the
    new bag, 'in case' (I can't bring myself to say the 'f' word) are
    around. At least they won't live long in the vac bag!
