3605.0. "Allergic to Cats?" by CSC32::K_KINNEY () Wed May 16 1990 16:08

    	I just heard something on our morning news from an
    	Allergy clinic locally. They had information for
    	persons suffering from allergies to cats. They have
    	suggested that people having these allergies might
    	want to try bathing the little guys first to see
    	if it makes a difference. It is their contention that
    	it is not cat fur or cat dander that causes the reaction.
    	Rather, it is cat saliva that is causing the problem.
    	What else they said was that the bathing should be
    	repeated monthly as this is about how long it takes
    	to build up enough on their fur (and the things they
    	lay around on) sufficient to start the sneezing, etc.
    	It sure might be worth a try for those who find themselves
    	suddenly looking for a home for their favorite little pal.

3605.1Hubby wants to bathe the crew...BOOVX1::MANDILEWed May 16 1990 17:249
    I don't dare mention this to my husband...he always
    wants to give the crew a bath. I told him I would
    rather take allergy pills than try to bathe four cats
    on a constant basis! :-)

    Aw, it ain't so bad..... When you show cats you get used to bathing
    them frequently...or when you're battling fleas.

    I have been bathing Nippa monthly for almost 2 years now. It HAS
    helped w/ my allergies - alot! When I bath her, I always gets tons
    of hair off her, and when she's dry, she doesn't shed for the month
    (okay well she does a little). I can't wait till her fot is healed,
    she has shed so much fur thru this whole ordeal, that a big time bath
    is in order!

    I know allergic folks who wipe their cat down with a
    damp washcloth every morning...works great for them,
    and the cat has grown to like the attention!

    Susan, that sounds like an interesting and easy idea - from what
    I understand, the dander is dried saliva - a damp washcloth could
    probably remove quite a bit of it. Probably wouldn't take but a
    couple of minutes.
