3574.0. "Kittens in MRO1 Complex" by LEZAH::KARENK () Mon May 07 1990 13:14

    				Kittens in MRO1

    There are 4 kitten in MRO1. They are living underneath the tower
    connecting MRO1 to MRO2. Their mother is the feral cat that has been
    around MRO1 for awhile.

    Several people are feeding the kittens including me. There are 2
    yellow ones, one black and one 3-color. They are absolutely
    adorable!!!

    My question: I want to take these kittens before they become like
    the mother cat. Roaming around and having kittens of their own.
    Whenever I go out to feed them, they run into their little hole in the
    side of the building. How do I go about gaining their trust, or do
    I just have high hopes in regards to that??

    Thanks for your help,

    Karen, You might want to contact either Roberta Kagno or Nancy DC, or
    Mary Tamir. They all have experience with rescuing ferel kittens.

    Karen, bring a cat carrier to work with you, and start putting the
    food in there for the kittens. Put it way in the back of the carrier,
    and feed them when you have time out of your work day. It takes
    awhile before you will be able to close the door behind them. This
    worked for me when I rescued 4 very feral kittens two summers ago.
    They will catch on to the idea of food in the carrier very quickly,
    but the slightest noise is going to frighten them, and cause them
    to bolt. You have to quick, but careful. What I did was stand
    behind the carrier crouched down and looking kind of nonchalont
    while the kittens went inside to eat. Once inside, I let them eat
    for awhile, then very quickly grabbed the handle of the carrier
    and tilted it on it's side, while closing the door with my other
    hand. This method worked well for me and I ended up taking the
    kittens to a local shelter. I also caught the momcat. This is
    important too, because if you don't catch her, she will continue
    to raise litter upon litter at your facility, especially now that
    she knows they will be well fed!

    Good luck. I'm sure you will be able to help them. Good for you!!

    I also have a fish net that we used to catch three of the four
    ferals we rehabilitated. You could also contact DLNVAX::PALMER in
    the MRO1 library for assistance. Lenora works with Framingham humane
    and could probably give you some excellent advice and maybe some
    help. She may even be able to get you a "have a heart" trap to use.

    When you do catch the kittens be very sure you keep them completely
    isolated from your own cats. Keep them in their own room and wash
    you hands thoroughly after each visit into the room and before you
    touch anything else. I know from personal experience just how much
    feral cats can carry - even when they test negative for FLV & FIV.
    If you want more advice or assistance (I'm in MR03) give me a call
    or send mail.
      Good luck and thanks for caring.

3574.4How about feeding them?MCIS1::MICHAELSONWed May 09 1990 20:043
    Is anyone feeding the little ones? Several people in my group have
    offered to bring food - who do we contact?

3574.5Update on KittenLEZAH::KARENKThu May 10 1990 10:3924

    Here's what's happening as of yesterday. I contacted the librarian
    at MRO1 who works for the Framingham Humane Society. She was
    going to set a Havahart trap for them last night, take them to the
    Framingham Animal Hospital to get checked out.

    If they had a clean bill of health, they would go to the Framingham
    Shelter where they would be up for adoption. If they had feline
    lukemia, or any other life-threatning disease, they would have to be
    put down.

    And yes, I was feeding the little tykes daily. I couldn't feed them
    yesterday. We wanted to have them a little hungry so they would go
    into the trap.

    I'll let you know more as I do. Thanks everyone for your help!

    Karen

    P.S. If the kittens are healthy, I'm going to be adopting a little
    yellow one. I've grown quite attached to them. My two other furry
    kitties at home will have to get used to a new brother or sister.

3574.6Another update.....not goodLEZAH::KARENKThu May 10 1990 13:1714
    Bad news: Apparently, the kittens have moved. Mother cat probably
    thought there was too much activity where she had them placed.

    Lenora is still going to try and set traps for them, but she tried last
    night and didn't see any kittens. She saw the mother cat, but the
    mother cat took off as soon as she saw Lenora.

    If anyone sees these kittens around the MRO complex, please let me
    know. I can be reached at LEZAH::KARENK or 297-7135.

    Thanks,
