3550.0. "Hot kits" by CAPNET::GOLDBERG () Fri Apr 27 1990 16:52

    Hi..

I used to go into this file alot, then I left DEC and now I don't
    have time!!

You may remember mummakitty and babykitty (how can you forget
    those names?) 8*)..

mumma is 6 or 7 yrs, baby is 1 1/2. both slightly overweight
(mumma more so because of the late neutering at 5 yrs) not
    unhealthily though..

Here is my question. I am frantically! worried about the summertime
heat and my kits. this is my first summer in my current apartment
its on the second floor of a house.. and it gets hot in there!!
I am scared to death I'll come home tonight and find them passed
out on the floor or something! Last summer I was in a place with
a basement, and they spent all their time there. I don't have a
basement now, or one cool place for them to hang out. What to do!!

I was thinking of getting an air conditioner just for their sakes but
no $$ until June to do so.. what about until then?

    Thanks for all input

    F.

PS last night gave them a good brushing (they are shorthairs anyway)
figure that can't hurt any for the heat.

What about investing in a cheap fan until you have the $$ for an air
conditioner. It will help to circulate the air thats in your apartment.
Can you leave a window cracked? Make sure you leave them plenty of water.

I leave the windows *open* and only spring water for my kits..

Someone told me that as long as the windows are open they will be
fine but I'm still paranoid! its 90 degrees out there today!

I'm the type that if I'm in one room and something makes noise in
the other I go running in in case something happened to one of my
kits!! (nothing has ever happened, mind you)

3550.3Keep the sun outSMEGIT::BALLAMFri Apr 27 1990 19:2010
If any of your windows face the sunny side of the house, you
may want to keep the shades low on those. If you keep the
sun from beating in and keep windows open for cross-ventilation
    there shouldn't be a problem.

On really hot days, I wonder if an inch or so of water in the
bathtub would be a good idea. May be a dumb idea, but some
cats do like to get wet.

Don't worry, your babies will be fine. I think cats must have their
own way of cooling down their body temperature. Most likely they will
sleep during the hot days and not build up any energy.

3550.5heat = worry !!EN::TRACHMANExotic Babies are soooo CuteFri Apr 27 1990 20:119
I worry about the heat also - my crazies have the opportunity to
go down to the basement level or stay on the main level of the
house where all the heat and sun are. Do they go down to the
nice cool downstairs and be very comfy (food, water, swimmingpool)
noooooo, these idiots stay upstairs sprawled out on the rugs in
the sun cooking (all SUMMER). sigh, don't they got any brains???
Guess they have built-in temperature controls or something.
Plenty of water, lowered shades, a fan that they can't stick
their paws or tails in helps.

When you say the windows are open, you mean they are opened
but screened, yes? Otherwise the cats may fall from teh windows.

When you do get an airconditioner, be sure it isn't set too chilly for
them, and that they have a place to get out of its draft.

3550.7Think they'll be ok.BLKPUD::WARNESGSpelt W * A * R * N * E * S!Mon Apr 30 1990 11:0711
In my experience, cats are experts at finding the most comfotable spot
in the house, be it warm or cool. Leave them too it, check for any
signs of restlesness or overheating (I'm told cats actually pant when
REALLY hot) - but it's my guess they'll find a place to their liking.

Failing that, a small fan (+ container with water nearby to make the air
less dry) would be an idea, pending the procurement of the air
conditioner. (Tch! the lengths we go to for our cats!)

Yes cats do pant. I've seen Oliver pant on a hot drive to the vet.
I believe it's their way of cooling down - similar to that in a
dog - since they don't perspire. I agree with that they will usually
find the most comfortable place for them in the house and not move
    around very much.

With the air, I have central and usually leave it set at 85. If
the house goes above 85, on it comes. When your shopping, it might
be helpful to look for one with a thermostat - maybe they all have
them now - haven't bought one in years.

Don't worry, they will be fine.

Re: -1. Minor Nit, The pads of cat's feet will perspire, especially
when nervous. Our cat, Herc, who passed away several years ago, hated
to go to the vet and would leave BIG WET paws prints all over the
    examination table while there.

    Thank you for the reassurance!

They survived the weekend before last, so they should make it through
the summer!.. I just worry because that one day it was 90 and about
50 at night it was still 120 in my apartment!!

I did buy a fan that day! they didn't seem uncomfortable at all
    perfectly happy..

think I'll buy an exhaust fan too instead of air cond.. about 250$
    cheaper!! 8*P

Yes I have screens.. wouldn't want to come home to a house full of
bugs and two kits on the roof 8*)!

    Thanks again
