3513.0. "Moving - Muffin needs a new home" by NEWWAV::PUTNAM () Wed Apr 11 1990 17:44

We are planning to relocate to Ireland this summer (July/August) and have come
to the painful decision to not take one of our two cats. The Republic of
Ireland has no rabies and, in an effort to keep it that way, they have a 6
month quarantine on incoming animals. Our decision to take one and not the
other is based on their respective personalities. PV, the cat we will take with
us is a laid-back, "Joe-Cool" type male. *Nothing* bothers him...

Muffin on the other hand would probably not fare well in quarantine. She
doesn't like being in close proximity to other cats and we are afraid that 6
months of that would be cruel.

We would like to find her a new home now, rather than in the summer so that if
things don't work out we could try to place her again. So, without further ado,
here is her bio:

Muffin is a gray tiger long hair. She is about 10 years old, neutered, and in
excellent health. Full records are available.

As indicated above, she really needs a home where she can be the one and only
cat (she has never really forgiven us for allowing PV into *her* home!).
Honestly, she used to be a pain, but she has mellowed a lot in the last year or
so and now regularly graces my lap.

She is quite affectionate - when *she* wants it (which is now quite often). On
the other hand, when she doesn't wish your attentions she will clearly let you
know... We haven't had any problems with her around children as she simply
won't allow little kids to get near enough to her to cause a problem.

Being a long hair, she needs brushing - especially in the spring. She also
hates being brushed! You have received fair warning...

Muffin is an indoor/outdoor cat. She does hunt and proudly brings home her
trophies - but she also understands that they are not welcome indoors and never
attempts to bring them in. She never shows any sign of worms or other problems
when she has her checkups.

Inquiries can be directed to me at SKYE::PUTNAM (DTN: 381-2955).

3513.1Be aware...BOOVX2::MANDILEWed Apr 11 1990 19:027
Be aware that it is kitten season, so the shelters will
be full. So if you cannot find her a home, and decide
to take her to a shelter, the chances of a home would be
slim to none because of her age.

Good Luck with Muffin. This IS a painful decision. Placing a
10 yr old cat will probably be difficult. Its wise to start this
early. Perhaps one of your friends who already knows Muffin....
I'll be thinking of you and will make it a point to say a little
    prayer.

3513.3If we can't place her...NEWWAV::PUTNAMThu Apr 12 1990 20:4316
Re: .-1 and .-2

Thanks for the advice. If we can't place her we will simply take her
with us. She is too much a part of the family to leave at the pound.
After all, she was our first "test child" and even though she *is*
a bit strange at times - she didn't turn out all *that* badly!

DEC pays for all costs associated with moving the cats so there isn't
any financial burden. It just the fact of her being in quarantine for
6 months that bothers us...

Our next door neighbor thought about adopting her but we figured it might
not work out so well. I imagine it would be hard for her to figure out that
she now lives next door. This wouldn't be so bad if the new tenant likes cats
and is willing to take on one as part of the house lease. But if they or a
subsequent tenant *didn't* like cats there could be a real problem...

I think you're right about not leaving her with your neighbor.
I have heard stories of folks moving to the other end of town
and the cat insisting on returning to the original home. Fortun-
ately, in this case the folks weren't cat-haters.

Perhaps she'll be ok with company. I believe you said that she
doesn't get along well with her housemate, but she may be awfully
thankful to have familiar company with her while in quarantine.
