3390.0. "Red dye reaction" by DPDMAI::HUDDLESTON () Mon Mar 05 1990 16:53

Help! My cat is having a reaction to dry food that has any red to it.
My vet says that some cats react to a red dye that is put into the
foods. She wont touch Science Diet (pebbles), and now the brownish red
supper super from nine lives is having the same affect. Any
    suggestions?

I forgot to say that the reaction she is having is that she is throwing
    up once a day.

I noticed this same reaction with Friskies dry, so I tried the
Purina Cat Chow Plus. They loved it, and no "losing it" at this
writing. It's yellow and has real chicken in it. Another dry that
they will eat but are not necessarily crazy about, was the Purina
Pro-Plan. It is also yellow. Curiously, I am not having any problems
with the Alpo dry, and that is very RED. And, they go crazy for
    it.

You might try Perform - ALL NATURAL - solved my Siamese's puking
    problem.

You can order it with a credit card and deliver it to your doorstep,
    very convenient!!

    Phone: 800.858.3500

If you ask, they will send you samples for you to try before you
order it. If you decide to order it, you might mention that I
recommended you and give them my Breeder I.D. # 951-3303.

I also use the Alpo for a little variety - they love that too and
don't upchuck very much. The Perform is really nice and they
seem to really like it - there are a bunch of notes in about it
and some folks that are using it - I'm not sure where they are
    though. Sorry!

Since our cat show in January (the one that I was show manager for),
I have gotten to know the rep from Max Cat cat food. He has been
trying to convince me for months that Max Cat uses a higher quality
protein source than Iams and Science Diet do. When my kittens were
having trouble digesting Science Diet, I showed the Max Cat ingredient
list to my vet, and she said to go ahead and try it on a few cats.
Well, the cats love it, and they are doing great on it. Even my
new cat, who has been in season for months, and not eating much,
loves it. She has put on about 1/2 pound in the four weeks she
has been on it. That is quite an accomplishment considering she
    is still in season.

Max Cat will be introducing a kitten food in a few weeks, and when
they do, I may make the switch for good. I like the results I have
been getting so far, and besides, my dog eats Nutri Max by the same
company. We might become a Max family! :^)

Jo, Max Cat has gone over real big in our house too. The cats love
it. I wasn't aware of the higher quality protein source; maybe
the cats knew it all along!! My sister-in-law's boyfriend drives
a truck for a feed store and gave me over 200 sample packages several
months ago. I have had to store it in barrels and tupperware
containers because when left unstored, the cats rip the packages
    open to get to it.

We still buy Iams for T.K.'s sake, but when offered a choice, Max
    Cat goes over the biggest.

    Does their dry contain ethoxyquin?

Where can you buy Max Cat? (and thanks for all the replys!)

Yes, the dry contains ethoxyquin (my bags state it anyway).

Max Cat is not available in supermarkets; it is sold through feed
stores like Farmers Exchange, Breeders Pride, Ericsons, etc. I
get mine at Consumer Pet in Westboro in the Bradlees shopping mall.

It is a fable that dry food helps keep cats' teeth clean.
I think canned C/D (Available from your vet) has no dyes in it.

    Hi,

You might also try Blue Seal Kat Kare (low ash), available from
your local Blue Seal dealer/grain store. This dry food is kind of a
    tannish/yellowish color, with no ethoxyquin.

regular science diet has no dyes either (well if it does, it doesn't
    bother Nippa - `the puker')

3390.12Of course, if kitty won't eat it, he won't vomit it, eitherVAXWRK::SKALTSISDebThu Mar 08 1990 15:275
The only problem with the canned C/D (other than price) is getting the
cats to eat it. Even the feline garbage disposal (Argus J. Puissycat,
    Esq) won't touch the stuff.

3390.13differing opinions on using dry kibbleFORTSC::WILDEAsk yourself..am I a happy cow?Thu Mar 08 1990 15:4912
According to my vet, feeding dry cat food DOES help keep the teeth clean...
the kibble does not contribute so much to plaque build-up, and cats that
are changed from soft/semi-soft food to dry can show an improvement in
teeth - the 16 year old siamese I live with managed to avoid a teeth
scaling session this way. When Dr. Lee noticed how bad Tabby's teeth
were getting, she told us to start feeding a quality dry food, cut out
the canned food entirely, and bring Tabby back in 6 months....when we
did, she showed us the improvement in Tabby's teeth! Needless to say,
the cats in my household get canned food as a treat (if they can eat
it) - but no cat gets enough canned to avoid eating kibble. All have
healthy teeth and healthy bodies....Boy, did they complain at first,
though...it was hard to change them over.
