    re: Registering a cattery

    1. pick a name. First names are not allowed. Titles like "Madam"
or "Lord" or "Lady" are not allowed. Keep the name short, remember
the cats name is limited to 30-35 characters and often includes
    two cattery names like:
      Talegre's Bonnie Bairn of Putiput

Try to pick something unique because names can't be used twice. Also
I think, from what Cindy told me, that a name that's close to a reg-
istered one will be rejected - like Caddyshack is too close to Cindy's
    Cattyshack

    2. Call CFA and CFF and request the forms to register then name.
Its $30 for CFA and $25 for CFF. I'm told to try CFA first because
its harder to come up with a unique CFA name. I took my chances
and went with CFF first and lucked out. Considering the origin
of the name I figured I was safe.

NOW - as to the origin of PUTIPUT

PUTIPUT - is a nonsense word that either I or my roommate came up
with that means "kitten" back when I had my first cat. In fact, its
    part of her full name:

Kathryn Elizabeth Velma Splotch Trouble Kielbasa PUTIPUT Kitten.

I dearly wanted to comemmorate poor Kathryn in my cattery name, but
couldn't come up with anything around Kathryn so I picked Putiput.
I kind of like the sound of:

      Putiput Scottish Folds.

Halie had her prenatal visit to Dr. Harris on June 4th. He says he
feels 5 or 6 kittens - which is about right for Halie. I told her
I hoped that she had 1 straight earred female in there and that the
rest were folded. She isn't saying.

Actually she's saying quite a bit, just not about the kittens. Things
like "I'm starving here, can't you open the can faster!! I'm eating
for 7 after all!" Halie is quite the "mouthie" cat. Since Batcat
also chatters quite a bit I expect this to be a noisy litter.

Both Bat & Halie are very sweet, affectionate kitties (and will make
wonderful pets someday) so I expect these kittens to be little dolls.
I should warn anyone seriously considering a scottish fold - Folds
are very strong minded and stubborn - at least the folds I have are -
    so be prepared.

Anyway, "B" day is June 18th. I'll keep you all posted.

Well, Halie will be very glad to hear that. She simply hasn't time
for anything but keeping Bob in line and eating. She's such a bossy
    little thing!
She's still taking the stairs two at a time! Better start caging
    her, eh?

3367.17How'd she get up there?CRUISE::NDCPutiput Scottish Folds - DTN: 297-2313Mon Jun 18 1990 12:4213
Well, when I left the house this morning Halie was doing her
"AMC Pacer" immitation. She isn't real crazy about being confined
but isn't too upset about it either. She's a good little girl.
She's due today but gut feeling says tomorrow.

Last night I dreamt that Halie gave birth to two kittens on
top of the ironing board! One seemed awfully mature - eyes open
etc - and was a brown tabby, the other one looked like the pictures
in the book and was white with black smoke spots. I jumped out of
bed and went to check Halie but no kittens yet. Should be interesting
to see what she has. Wonder if any will match my dream.

Dad is a very "typey" straight earred fold - black smoke and white.
I'm told that a black smoke is genetically a silver tabby.
Mommy is a brown tabby and white - looks much like Dundee except
she has the dark nose-leather. These are NOT going to be very
colorful kittens. I'm routing for some silver tabbies. Guess
I wouldn't mind a good smoke either. Wonder if I can get solids
out of this mix. - Guess a solid smoke would be the only possibility.

Anyway - aside from being a bit cranky today Halie doesn't seem
inclined to deliver yet. I'm getting impatient.

3367.21WR2FOR::CORDESBRO_JOset home/cat_max=infinityThu Jun 21 1990 18:258
Cin will have to put her genetics background to this task, but it
seems that silver tabbie w/whites, brown tabby w/whites, smoke tabby
w/whites. I am pretty sure that all the babies will have white,
cause I think that in this case it is a dominant, but Cin will have
to confirm this. I am not too good at the color genetics, since
I only have to deal with seal and blue in my breed.

    Jo
3367.22Boring is in the eyes of the beholder!ICS::GERRYHome is where the Cat isThu Jun 21 1990 19:0332
Yup, Jo, your right, all the kittens will be w/white! I didn't think
that Smoke Tabby was a real color class, although almost every smoke
you'll ever see has tabby markings. I think you got all the color
possibilities....Now, when we start working with these smoke and silver
and brown colors, it can be surprising! I would think you'ld also have
a chance for Golden Tabbies w/white.

Nancy, this is a very similar color breeding to Stripees and Tabitha...
Brown Tabby to Silver Tabby....in 2 litters, we got the following
    colors:

3 Black Smokes...all showing tabby markings at birth....the tabby
markings on the Black Smoke from the first litter faded as the kitten
matured...the 2nd litter is too young to tell if they're going to fade
or not, but I'm assuming so.

    1 solid black

    4 silver tabbies

    1 golden tabby

    1 brown tabby

So, if that tells you anything, your chances of silvers and smokes is
    probably greatest!

I think these colors are "neater" than boring blues, reds, creams, etc.

re: .21

> I only have to deal with seal and blue in my breed.

I thought I heard that there was also chocolate (not that it was common,
but that it *existed*.)? The context was someone wondering how to get
lilac, and suggesting some strange outcrosses, but the response was that
since you had blue and chocolate, you could breed lilac without
outcrossing.

Was I dreaming this?

Ray
3367.24WR2FOR::CORDESBRO_JOset home/cat_max=infinityThu Jun 21 1990 23:0923
    Ray,

You weren't dreaming this. In fact, at one point, it was you that
explained to me how the genetics of the dilutes work (although I
must admit I can't remember how it works now), but I think that
if you have chocolate and blue you can get lilac too.

But, I don't have chocolate, only seal and blue. There are only
12 chocolate and/or lilac Birmans registered in the US right now,
and the type on those 12 aren't up to my standards yet (boy, what
a *snob* I am! :^D), so I have chosen not to work with those colors.
Also, I am really not in the position to keep a lot of cats, and
working with those colors in Birmans right now means that you need
to be willing to keep multiple kittens from breedings in order to
do test breeding to find out who is carrying what. Not enough breeding
cats of the right colors to just breed chocolates and lilacs right
now, and those that do exist need some outcrossing.

Anyway, they do exist, there were 12 registered for 1989-90 show
season. When they get them up to 400-500, then I may get into it.
By then I may have a huge house, and the type might be better. :^)

3367.25First you build the house. Then you paint it.MAZE::FUSCIDEC has it (on backorder) NOW!Thu Jun 21 1990 23:4123
re: .24

Thanks for the real scoop.

If you ever want to get into this, all("easy for *him* to say (^* ") you'd
need would be an outcross, typey chocolate stud. First generation to your
blues would give you seals. Breed back these seals to the chocolate, and
you'd get 50% chocolates. Breed these seals to each other, and you'd get
1/16 lilac, 3/16 each blue and chocolate, and the rest seal. (All assuming
that the chocolate didn't carry blue. If you're interested in any
particular scenario, let me know, and I'll run the combinations.)

If you had some blue queens who weren't particularly related to each other,
you could probably make this work in the context of your normal operation.

My attitude toward the test breedings you mentioned is that I wouldn't do
them just to find out about color (but I would keep track of color in my
other breedings). I guess we're just as "snobbish" about type as you are.

I find it fun to tell Eileen what colors we can expect from any particular
breeding. I think the possibility of the different colors adds spice.

3367.26Type over Color, with most colors!ICS::GERRYHome is where the Cat isFri Jun 22 1990 13:2712
Well, I always believed the expression Build the house, then paint it,
but as I have started working with both Silvers and Color Points in my
breeding program, I have begun to realize that sometimes you have to
think about the color you want to paint the house as your choosing the
    design....

i.e. I have to be willing to compromise type for color in my Silver
program, putting slightly more value on coat and eye color than I
normally would in my tabby program.

    Ray,

I will keep all that in mind. I have a friend that lives nearby
that has a lilac girl and a chocolate girl. She has kept a very
typey blue male that is out of her chocolate girl and she plans
to use him in her dilute program. If she bred him to a seal, what
would she get? If she bred him to a blue, what would she get?

Currently, all the chocolates and lilacs in the states are all coming
from the same cattery in England. Another problem with alot of
the imports is that they don't have 5 generations of Birman to Birman
breeding and CFA won't register them. My friend was able to get
both of her cat's registered, but it took about 6 months of hard
    work to accomplish it.

Oh, while I am here in the birth announcement note, Mirabel had
5 kittens a while back (I am kind of late since they are already
weaned!). Two seal point boys, a seal point girl, and two blue
point girls. I am still looking for dyamite N names.

Ok - this is what I think we have in the litter -

1 boy - the black and white who looks like Batman. Guess he'll have
to be named Robin unless we can think of some other batman
            related name.
6 girls - Definitely two brown tabbies. They are beautiful chocolate
brown and at least one has a slightly different fur texture
which has me wondering if its possible to have a longhair.
              Much too early to tell.

Two ?silver tabby & white and two silver tabby. I question
the silver part because some of them seem to have a slight
tinge of brown on the backs of their heads and because the
markings are light on black rather than black stripes on
              light.

That isn't really clear - lets see if I can explain it
better. Classic tabbies have bull'seye patterns on their
sides. Now on a brown tabby, like Dundee or Halie, there
is a dark bulls'eye surrounded by the lighter brown circle.
I believe on silver tabbies the bullseye is silver with
a black circle around it. Their faces are definitely silver-
grey tho and not brown. Guess I'll wait and see.

re: .42 -< Do you have a standard color chart on line? >-

No, I don't. I made that one up.

The combinations get out of hand *real* fast. That chart did combinations
on just *two* gene sites, with just *two* genes for each site, and went a
page. A general color chart would be impossibly big.

If you have a question about a particular breeding or gene combination,
I'll give it a shot, though. You'd need to be a bit more specific than
"red".

Send me mail.

Ray, I guess my brain only works in RED or BROWN mode and classic tabby
mode !!! As if you didn't know that - guess ya just have to look
around my house. BTW, your nephew has been VERY fresh lately - he
thinks he's a BOY! I'm not sure if anyone has posted any book titles
on gentics anywhere in the file, but if you or anyone knows of any
books along those lines - in simple form - not so technical it can't
be understood - it would be nice to have it around for quick reference.
I have a lot to learn about breed what to what, if ya know what I mean.

Well, Elaine, there is Genetics for Cat Breeders by Roy Robinson
or Cat Genetics by A.C. Jude. I was able to get both by just having
the local bookstore order them for me (not something that they stock
everyday--not alot of call for them) :^)

Okay Nancy, I still think you should name the black and white "Bat
out of Hell"! But, other Batman names are :

    The Joker
Vicky Vale (which you thought of)
    The Penguin
    Robyn
    Cat Woman
    Batgirl
    Commissioner Gordon
    Bruce What's-his-name (batman's AKA)
and then any of the bad guys that you can remember. My memory is
    shot.

Or, how about "Bat on a Hot Tin Roof"!

I like the Ear names too. My friend Judy has a fold named Ears
    to Being Happy.

Well, I have a lot easier time of it when it comes to naming other
folks' kittens. My own are another story. Right now I have what
looks to be a very nice blue girl that I can't decide on a name
for. I asked Cin for help, and she came up with the same name that
I was thinking, so we may just name her Mysinhs Notorious!

I did a stud service for a couple who have only one Birman, and
this is their first litter. They had three kittens, two boys and
a girl, all blue points (possible, but highly unlikely in this case).
Anyway, they were calling the boys "dudes" but then one boy grew
a bit bigger than the other, so they started calling him Major Dude
and the other was Minor Dude. Well, as luck would have it, Minor
Dude turned out to be really nice, and worth keeping for showing
and breeding. When I signed the litter reg. form, I asked them
what they were going to name this show kitten of their's, and they
answered "Minor Dude, that's his name". Well, knowing that this
guy's name would probably be showing up on pedigrees, show reports,
etc., I tried to explain to them that this was a really nice kitten,
and that the name Minor Dude made him sound somehow inferior. Besides
I reasoned, it isn't even an *N* name. Well, they wouldn't budge...
until I came up with a suitable compromise... His name is now (drum
roll please...) Kittahkats No Minor Dude!! (the exclamation points
are part of his name) :^) :^) There, that is better now isn't
    it?

    :^)

    Thanks for the suggestions Jo!

Jo hit on the Batman theme, since daddy is named Batman (but got
registered "Bartman"...go figure). Only problem I find with
batman is that there are more male names and I have 6 females.
So Lets also go with Scottish or "ears" names.

Here's some that I came up with. Some are along the Batman theme,
others are just names I like.

          Putiput's Sparkle MacTavish
          Putiput's Robyn MacTavish
Putiput's Julie (after Julie Newmar who played catwoman)
Putiput's Vicky Vale (From Batman, the movie)
          Putiput's Zephyr Blue
          Putiput's Kathryn
          Putiput's Katrice (Kat for short)
          Putiput's Bat out of Hell

          Putiput's Penguin
          Putiput's Cat Woman
          Putiput's Batgirl
          Putiput's Commissioner Gordon
          Putiput's Bruce Wayne

          And then there's :
          Putiput's Sargent O'Hara
          Putiput's Bratcat
          Putiput's BatBrat
          Putiput's Batcat

          How about:
          Putiput's Shining Star
          Putiput's Little-bit
          Putiput's Ears Kitty
Putiput's Ishkabible (My mom's nickname for my sister)

I am really enjoying these names. I can't wait to find out who should

    Nancy,

Can you tell which ones have folded ears yet? How many are folded and
    how many are straight eared?

    Just curious,

The ears don't open until about 2-3 weeks, so I would assume that
she can't tell yet. Kittens start to open their eyes between 1-2
weeks, and then the ears come next. Up until then, all kittens
    are folds! :^)

    re: .77 - I love it!!!!

re: folding - that's 3-4 weeks that they fold.

Well, last night Halie decided that the kittens couldn't stay
where they were any longer. I had heard them yelling and went
up to check. There was a little pile of sleeping kittens and
I started to head back down again when I realized that the pile
was smaller than it should have been. I did a count and only got
to five!! Well a search ensued involving Jack, Myself and two of
our friends. We found Halie and the two missing kittens in the
bedroom closet. We proceded to have a debate with a very determined
mommy over why she had to stay in the other room. Halie kept trying
to get the kittens through the bars of the cae which worried me
considerably. I was afraid she'd hurt them.

Well, we reoriented the cage and let her have the kittens in the
box in another part of the room and I closed the door so no one
could come in and bother her. The other cats weren't really bothering
her anyway. She spent the night in there fine and this morning I
transferred everyone back to the cage. With the house on the market
I can't afford to leave the kittens out in the room. I don't want
ANYONE touching them without my permission. The cage makes things
off limits - and basically unreachable.

Can any of you breeders enlighten me as to what was going on with
    Halie last night?

    Nancy,

If the kittens are getting ready to open their eyes, she's probably
looking for a dark place for them. You might want to drape sheets over
the cage to make it darker for her.

she would have normal kittens, How could kittens be normal that
if: 1) the mother had carried them for 80 days, or 2) the mother
was impregnated by an altered tomcat?

I haven't talked to the vet yet, but form messages relayed by his

young to reproduce, 2) 80 days is too long, 3) neutered tomcats....

    tomcat is neutered?

No, she didn't get out, and yes I'm sure that Jesse was neutered.

Anyway, those were the bigest, most active, fatest kittens I ever
saw. They were born one right after the other, in a very few minutes
it was all over. I also was worried that Cindy would not have enough
milk, but she seems to. I also never saw kittens grow so fast, on the
tenth day when I got up in the morning they all had their eyes fully
open. two days later they strarted trying to walk, thats taking
    some time (wobble,wobble,falldown,wobble,wobble,falldown).

Don't worry, they will open eventually. If you want to try and
help them along, you can moisten their lids with terramycin or warm
water, and then very gently try to separate the lids. They may
be still shut if they are having any kind of infection. Look for
puffiness under the closed lids. Pus can accumulate under the lids
and make it hard for the lids to open. If they are infected, you
have to get them open right away and get some medication into them
    to prevent any corneal damage.

Oh, so Nancy, they are in the scream-head stage? That lasts for
several weeks. My guys at home are smack dab in the middle of the
scream-head stage right now, but haven't quite hit the poo-head
stage yet. We moved them into the office last night, which gives
them more room (and more places to poo--if the mood strikes them)
and so far they are using the box. But, when I go in and play with
them, they all climb into my lap and scream their little heads off.
I pet them and love them and still they scream. And boy, what a
set of lungs on those guys!!

Let's see, there is the scream-head stage, then the
    walk-sideways-like-crabs-head stage, then the poo-head stage. I
will let you know when I remember what stage comes after poo-heads.
Poo-heads is such a doozy that it is hard to recollect if they ever
    come out of it.

okay, how old are they when they hit the poo head stage?

I don't recall if my girlfriends kittens actually hit that
stage.....but they definatly had the scream head stage.....for a long
    time!!!!!

I don't remember where I saw someone asking about this, but she has
2 cats (no flames please guys this is just a cute observation) :*)
and one was due shortly after the other. After the kittens were born,
the still expectant mom hissed and hissed at the newborn kittens. She
kept this right up untill she had her own litter. Then it was like a free
for all. The mom of the second litter kept stealing the mom # 1's
kittens (maybe she didn't think mom # 1 was doing a good job). It was
real cute to see her dragging 6 week old kittens around (when hers were
only a week or two old) who didn't want to be dragged back to the nest.
MAybe she liked the babies older....

3367.109WR2FOR::CORDESBRO_JOset home/cat_max=infinityThu Jul 05 1990 21:2713
The poo-head stage varies from about 6-8 weeks. Once they hit it,
they don't seem to grow out of it until about 12 weeks or so,
regardless of what age they went into it! Picture if you will 6
weeks of poo-headedness...not a pretty sight!

My girls are always trying to steal kittens. They seem to really
fight over the big, fat, sassy kittens. Sometimes this willingness
to mother anyone and everyone comes in handy. I have often had to
let one of my queens take in orphan kittens, and once had to have
one queen take care of another's litter while she recovered from
    a c-section.

                                 beanie-weanie

                                       or

                                 weanie-beanie

depending on your mood for the day! I guess that I'm not too sad, but
I think I must have missed 'most' of the poohead stage - my beanie-
weanies took care of business pretty well. I don't remember very
many slip ups ! I used to run around the house counting heads:
one beanie-weanie, two beanie-weanies, etc. etc., etc. Sometimes
I would misplace one or two - they duck into the tinest spaces -
the seat of the chair under the desk was a favorite place for
at least 3 of them to pile up and still is for Dolly. It's now
the first place I look when I don't see her around! I do imagine
my poohead day will come - maybe with Lil's litter !! I was told
that I would have had to pay extra for the brain package when I
bought Lil. I figured that I didn't need it, so I skipped it -
I'll probably be VERY sorry !!

Jo's comment about foster mom's took a different turn on the new
T.V. show Prime Time Pets. It showed a ferocious Dobe, w/ long sharp

Well, I'm happy to report that at least two of the kittens' ears are
folding. I'm holding my breath for three more. I think I know that
two will be straight-ears but its still much too early.

The ones that are folding are the brown tabby girl and the silver
tabby & white boy (Hear that Roberta!!). I'm also reasonably
sure the brown tabby male is folding but its too early to know for
    sure.

Well, at this point, Michele, I am trying to decide between a new cat
and Dana. What to do, what to do! :^). All kidding aside, I have
always wanted a silver tabby Fold, and since the babies won't be ready
to go to new homes until at least the beginning of October, there is
still plenty of time to convince him. A lot can happen between now and
then anyway. I am trying very hard to be good and not actively go out
and search for another cat. I like the fact that Folds have some
"mutt" cat in them, and are not so selectively bred.

Nancy, that is terrific news! Take some pictures for the Feliner's

3367.128Hope this clarifiesFSHQA2::RKAGNOThu Jul 12 1990 14:279
What I meant by that, E.T., is that there are allowable outcrosses, and
I know (right Nancy?) that at least an Am Shorthair is close up in the
pedigree of these babies. Maybe mutt was the wrong word to use. I
like the fact the Folds can be outcrossed to certain other breeds, thus
promoting greater chances of good health and longevity. This doesn't
mean I am criticizing breeds that are selectively bred (like Ragdolls).
I just like the idea of using a larger genepool. From what I have been
through over the past two years, it feels "safer."

3367.129Yup - I think I know what you meanTOPDOC::TRACHMANEmacX Exotics * 264-8298Thu Jul 12 1990 15:2218
ah, I wondered - I had thought that straight ears could be bred to
either americans or to brits - either of those are purebreds - I
think I see what you mean.

I think outcrossing does promote health - more experienced breeders
than I could go into more accurate detail than I.

You certainly have had more than your share of grief - all I know is
that I learn from listening to all the stories I hear - sometimes I
wonder just what this breeding business is really all about. It's
not quite as easy as some folks may think.

You should remember that problems can still exist within an outcrossed
line, if there are problems in those lines to begin with. Lots of
research on the breeders part will help eliminate those problems.
I guess it's a function of experience and that just takes time.

3367.130Congrats to PUTIPUT!MEIS::LEVINThu Jul 12 1990 15:3024
Belated congratulations to PUTIPUT Scottish Folds! Have changed
jobs and didn't have a system or a phone for quite a while so have
been out of touch. We wish you the best of luck and much success
with your new cattery. Congrats also on the birth of Halie's
kittens! Can't wait to hear about their folding ears......

RE:78 and Halie moving her babies. Candy did that too with both of
her litters at about the same age. I had read somewhere that it is
instinctual. When the cats are in the wild the mother is rather
immobile for the first couple of weeks, and the dad goes for food.
Since the mom and babes are immobile they are open to any other
animals that may attack. So once the babies are a little bigger and
can be moved without harm, the mom will move them to another "nest"
just in case their first one was discovered by other attackers.
Interesting theory, don't know for sure if it's true......

E.T. is right, outcrossing is no guarantee that all will be well.
Even if the Brit or Am SH that a Fold is bred to is an outcross
to her, it might be inbred itself and therefore prepotent for genetic
    problems. So much to consider.

re: .128 - Let me clear this up just a tad. Scottish folds have
very humble origins. The first fold was a white barn cat. In refining
the breed, alot of other breeds were crossed in - including pointed
varieties. At this point the breed is fairly stable and you are only
allowed two outcrosses. Those are the British & American shorthairs
both of which have the right body type and both of which have good
    large gene pools.
      Nancy DC

3367.133CRUISE::NDCPutiput Scottish Folds - DTN: 297-2313Thu Jul 12 1990 18:476
One other point. When you breed folds you always breed folded to
straight ear. So when you outcross the American or British shorthair
is the "straight ear" part of the mating. I suppose you could
breed a straight ear fold to an american or brit sH but I don't know
what the result would be. A straight earred fold I guess.

Well, I feel fairly confident saying that we have FIVE folds out of
seven kittens. The two that look like they'll be straight ears are
two of the females - the silver tabby and "sugar & spice" the silver
and white tabby. The best folded so far is the brown tabby female.
I'm seriously considering keeping one of the folded ear kitties to
show. They'll be old enough on October 22nd. Whether I'll keep
her much beyond that I don't know.

Well now we've only named a couple of them. We are still calling
Batman's little replica "Baby bat" but I don't think that will be
his real name. I decided I wanted to name the little brown tabby
boy "Cha-deech". I have no idea of the correct spelling, but Star
Trek TNG fans should recognize the name as the Klingon term for
a "second" when a Klingon challenges the High Council. I believe
that particular episode was on last saturday.

The little white and silver tabby girl is being called "Sugar & Spice",
sugar for short. She has a VERY sweet face. I have a listing of all
those great suggestions and I'm having a heck of a time deciding!

The rest of the babies are unnamed as yet.

I'm happy to report that the kittens are now enjoying a mixture of
KMR and canned catfood. They have also started to use the catbox
so we won't have to refer to their room as the "land mine". Jack
    now calls them Poo-heads.

I hope I wasn't too quick to say I have 5 folds because this morning
I noticed that Cha Deech's ears, while still curled forward, don't
look as folded. I know their ears go up and down and I hope that's
    all it is.
      Live and learn.

I am going to name a boy Owen Meany. I just finished reading the
book by the same name, written by John Irving.

I usually only register names the breeding/show kittens, but
sometimes I register the pets. It just depends. I am naming the
pet boy in this litter Nightmare, but I won't register him as that.
There is a difference between naming them and registering them. I
almost always name them, I usually don't register names for the pets.

My husband likes Night on the Town for the seal boy. He will probably

    update on the fold kittens.

They were exactly one month old on sunday. I'm sure four of them
are folding and reasonably sure about the fifth. I've definitely
got one with an excellent ear-set (brown tabby female) and some
others that I believe will be pretty good. The silver straight-earred
female has the BIGGEST eyes I've ever seen.

Everyone but CH'Dich eats a mixture of softened kitten dry food, KMR &
canned cat food and really loves it. Ch'Dich ignores it and heads for
mommy. Guess he knows a good thing when he's got it.

Beverly says that the heat will effect their earset so if it ever
cools off maybe I'll get a good idea of the quality of the ears
anyway. Bev also says that they (the kittens not just their ears)
    change again around 6 weeks.

We're really enjoying them. I go into the room a couple of times
a day and sit on the floor and they come running over and climb in

since everyone is having so much fun with these names, I've got another
set that I'd like to throw at you. Both Silver and Pita will be bred
their next heat. I'm going to have LOTS of kittens!!! We've FINALLY
found a Korat male who is not half way across the country.

Anyway, what I want to do is to have all of Silver's kitten's names
have the word Silver in it and have all of PITA's (aka, Lady sings the
blues) have the work blue in their names.

have fun everyone. Here are the names we've figured out so far.

    Jo,

That rule only stands if the breed of cat comes in the color that your
using....for example....Korats only come in blue, so since they don't
come in Silver, she can use the word silver in the cats name.

On a persian, you can't name a blue persian anything with the word
silver in it because Silver is a color of persian.

So, if the breed of cat that your naming doesn't come in the color that
you want to use in the name, you can use that color in the name.

    Confusing, ain't it!

Ah yes, but the actual name of the color that Korats come in is
"Silver-blue" because of the silver Sheen that the cats have, they
    have a unique color name.

but still, it doesn't matter what color name I use, as they only come
    in that one unique color.

I love the names! Keep them coming!!!

I really like a lot of them. Old Blue eyes was nice, but sorry, Korats
don't have blue eyes. They have light green (sort of the color of a
green apple). the oriental called it "the color of young rice".

    Keep the names coming!!

3367.189Auntie Dundee?!!!CRUISE::NDCPutiput Scottish Folds - DTN: 297-2313Tue Sep 04 1990 12:1020
I know folks have written about this before but I never thought
I'd see it in my own home!

Up until now we've had to refer to the cat my Dundee was named after
as "Dundee-mommy-cat". Well, that distinction isn't quite accurate
any more. Seems my Dundee has adopted the kittens!! He grooms them
and cuddles them and....LET'S THEM NURSE ON HIM! I thought I was
seeing things. He's very very happy in his new role. As my boss
    says "He's a 90's kind of guy".

I'm keeping my eye on Dundee to be sure that the kittens don't irritate
his little nipples. Halie still lets them nurse a bit. I'm sure
Dundee isn't nearly as rewarding to nurse on as Halie, but he's more
    patient at this point :-)))))))

    Nancy

BTW - Dundee NEVER misses the catbox now. He's clearly a very happy
    cat now.

3367.190Scottish Fold kittens for saleCRUISE::NDCPutiput Scottish Folds - DTN: 297-2313Tue Sep 04 1990 13:3260
Well, the kittens are 2.5 months old and I think I can determine
who I won't be keeping meaning that they're available for sale
    to the right catlovers :-)

Silver tabby male - folded ears. Looks like he's going to be stocky
like his dad. The only kitten who's yet to be
                        named.
Black Smoke & White male - folded ears. We call this little guy
"baby bat" because he's go the same markings as
his dad. This guy has a "reasonable" earset and
looks like he'll have his mom's more finely boned
                        body.
Brown tabby male - folded ears - not a very good earset but he more
than makes up for it in personality! This one's
named "Ch'Dich" which is a klingon word from
Star Trek TNG. I'm very very fond of both the
brown tabbies. He's something of a lapcat and
                       a real purrbox.

Brown tabby female - if I can bear to part with her. "CC Rider" named
in honor of HRH Pookie. Folded ears - better earset
than Ch'Dich but still not great. Finely boned like
her mom and very very sweet and affectionate. Also
a lapcat. If anyone wants both browns I'll make you
                       a very good deal.

Silver tabby & white male - (reserved). The best of the litter.
Beautiful markings and the best earset of the
litter. He inherited dad's stocky body and has
a nice round little head. He finally got a name
last night: Putiput's Silver Shadow. Someone
has first right of refusal on Shadow, but if she
doesn't take him he'll be available.

The price on these kittens is $200 - $250. They all have good tails
as far as I can tell now. Their dad helped alot in adding some length
and flexibility to them. Stiff tails are a problem in scottish folds.

I do have a contract and make the following requirements:
    1. Cats must be indoor only
    2. Cats must be neutered at the appropriate age
    3. Cats must NOT be declawed without my permission
    4. If for any reason you can not keep the cat, I get first right of
refusal. No cat of mine will end up in a shelter if I can help it.

The kittens have already received 2 shots and are due for a third
    on Sept 17th.

I have two straight earred folds that may also be available for
    adoption. "Putiput's Sugar & Spice" a silver tabby/white female
with a very very sweet face and "Putiput's Angel Eyes" a silver
tabby female who's ears are big enought to be wings and who has
the biggest eyes I've every seen. Angel has a wonderful cobby
body so I may be keeping her, but I"m not sure.

The only names that I'd really like to have registered are "CC Rider"
and "Ch'Dich". Of course, you can call them whatever you want (being
cats they probably won't answer you anyway ;-)

re: Dundee allowing the kittens to nurse.

I read an article in Cat Fancy approx. a year ago about an abby male that
allowed kittens to nurse...and eventually began to give milk! Apparently,
it isn't impossible. This male was also neutered, and was "uncle" to the
all the litters of kittens from the cattery. I think I remember that the
only problem is to be sure that the kittens don't irritate the nipples and
that eventually, the kittens must be weaned - if they won't give up, they
have to be separated from "uncle" until they are weaned. It was a very
interesting story, but it was a long time ago, and I don't remember much
else about it.

BTW - the kittens all sound lovable, and quite lovely. Good work from the
Putiput cattery.

I guess I should ask the other breeders. Do I have to force the
kittens to be weaned? They now spend the day separated from mom
and I assume that Halie will wean them herself. Is that true?

I usually don't force wean my kittens either. I had to wean Mirabel's
kittens early though, due to one of them having an allergic reaction
to Mirabel's milk. They have done fine. In fact, I was thinking
that they were really adjusting well (they are now four months old)
until last night. I caught four of them nursing off the other one!
Night Life was all stretched out, and had one kitten sucking on
a front leg, another sucking her armpit, another sucking her belly
and the last one sucking on her thigh!! And she was happily making
bread on the carpet and purring away. Weird! ;^)

Lyscentia sprouted milk for Laci's last litter. Laci decided it
was time to wean, but Lyscentia felt Laci was being too quick about
it I guess. Took us months to get Lyscentia to dry up. Had to
totally separate her from all the other cats since Limoges was nursing
off her too (Limoges was a year and a half and pregnant to boot!).

Ken and I teased that Limoges was so psycho that she would probably
nurse off *herself* when her milk finally came down. It hasn't
happened yet, knock on wood. Maybe she is finally going to outgrow
that now that she has babies of her own.

to get them developed. Hopefully by the next Feliner party.

Tony stopped over last night to see the kittens and was very
impressed. The silver tabbies, especially, are VERY solid kittens.
Also, now that the weather is cooling off their ears have come down
and they look pretty good :-)

I will be keeping Angel for breeding :-) Now I have to find a good
folded male for her - well, in 9 months or so, anyway.

"Baby bat" (black smoke and white), Percy (silver) and Silver Shadow
(Silver and white) are available for immediate sale.
Ch'Dich is reserved at the moment and I may keep CC. I believe Sugar
will be going to San Francisco.

Tony said he feels that the kittens are worth $300-$350 and that's
what I will be asking at the shows. Anyone who hears about the
kittens through this file will get the "Dec Discount" mentioned
in the previous note. So if anyone wants to talk to me at the
shows about purchasing a kitten be sure they tell me that they
    heard about them thru Feline.

I called Josie and Greg on Monday night and she's doing just fine.
Josie says everytime she sits down Sugar (they haven't given her a
name yet) runs over and either climbs into her lap or curls up next
to her and purrs and falls asleep. And Beverly says that Folds aren't
lapcats. Well at least 5 of 7 in my litter are :-)

Greg says that there was just a little hissing between Sugar and Naomi,
their 7 month old, and that Sugar really stands her ground and does
"puffed kitty". I'm sure they'll be playing together in no time.

That's pretty amazing for a kitten who'd never been out of the house
before Sunday! Sounds like she'll be fine and has taken the entire
change in stride. I'm glad that it hasn't been at all traumatic for
    her.

I will be keeping two kittens out of the litter - "Angel eyes" who is
now registered with CFA (along with the litter) because she is VERY
"typie" like her dad, and I'll be keeping CC Rider - also registered
with CFA because she's got excellent markings and I couldn't bear to
part with her anyway ;-) I sent in the registration for Shadow
yesterday and if he has't been sold by Nov 4th & 10th I'll be bringing
him and CC out to see how they do. The kitten competition with folds
is getting almost as tough as it is for Persians! Nancie Belser
usually has 3-4 kittens entered, Beverly has 1-2 and there are a couple
of new fold breeders now - Sue Ross and another person from NH and now
myself. Well, its really good for the breed!

Now.... can I interest anyone in some beautiful male fold kittens
    :-))))

Now I have another question for the breeders. The kittens are about
4.5 months old. I still have the two females I intend to keep and
two males - Shadow and Percy. At what age do you start separating
the males and females? I hate the thought of locking up the boys,
but I don't want uncontrolled matings, ESPECIALLY between CC and the
boys - all of whom are folded.

Percy is a gorgeous, silver classic tabby with an adorable temperament!

Actually, only Shadow's name is registered.
The full names are: PUTIPUT'S Silver Shadow (Like a Roles Royce) and
PUTIPUT'S Percival Peeps (I think that name came
from feline, but I don't remember where.

    Nancy,

I caught Moody Blue breeding at 6 mos and 3 days old!! I would
watch the boys like a hawk, and see if they are displaying any
male-like behavior. If they aren't, I would still plan on separating
them from about 5.5 months on.

He wouldn't be named after my Percy would he :-) ? :-) ? Remember
Percy? He got run over in March :-( Percy was a huge ginger tabby.

Well Lisa, I did think of you when I started calling him Percy so
I guess he is named after Percy in a way :-)))

Jo - Thanks for the advice. So far I've seen no indications of
sexual behavior - on the part of ANYONE (except Batman who's always
ready). If I still have the kittens when they turn 6 months I'll
    just have them neutered.

Well Last night kitten #4 went to his new home. Putiput's Percival
Peeps - who's new name will be Putiput's Sir Charles (aka Charlie)
left with Dick Marsh to be transported today to Marlboro to Dick's
sister's house. Some of you may know Dick as the exhibitor who
is owned by McTim a little black scottish fold and Ashley, a beautiful
golden tabby & white scottish fold. These cats have both competed
against Dundee in the alter class.

In honor of the occasion all Putiput cats dined on Sheba and then
played sparkler. Bonnie helped out considerably by grabbing one
sparkler in her mouth and dragging it around with 3 kittens (who are
now all bigger than she) chasing after her.

Poor Percy/Charlie wasn't at all sure that he liked being popped
into a strange catbed in a strange smelling carrier. I KNOW he's
going to a very caring home but I always worry about how traumatic
    the adjustment will be.

Percy/Charlie will be sharing his home with a 10 lb poodle named
Hewey and will be the main character in Helene's second children's
book. So it looks like we may have a celebrity on our hands!!
Perhaps Ms. Prescie would like to start planning a celebration for
    when the book is published.

      Nancy DC

p.s. I still have Shadow who will be neutered after the Mansfield show.

I can't stand it any more! I just have to make this announcement
and hope that I'm not wrong. It'll be very embarassing if I am :-)

I am 95% sure that the Bonster is pregnant! She FINALLY went into
heat on January 20 and was bred to Batman. So she's due around the
25th of March! I can't wait! Since Bonnie is a silver patched
tabby & White van we have the potential of getting some VERY pretty
    kitties.

Everyone cross your fingers and say your prayers for a safe pregnancy
and delivery. This is Bonnie's first litter.
