3361.0. "Sad note " by CISM::LOBOV (In you wildest dream) Thu Feb 22 1990 12:20

This note is very hard to write..just thinking about I get tears
in my eyes. Last night on my way home I saw something in the road
so I turned down my street and jumped out of my car and went to
look. A very beautiful large black Cat had been hit by a car.
I went to a few houses on the street and no one answered there
door (of course it was 11:00 at night). I went into my house and
got a towel and wrapped the cat in it. I placed the cat across
the street on a the front yard of the people whom I beleive own
the cat. I hope that I did the right thing.

This cat was on Washington Street in Hudson.

I've got to go to the ladies room now and wash my face.

3361.1Because you cared!...BOOVX2::MANDILEThu Feb 22 1990 13:1321
I know how you feel. Just the thought of it tightens my tummy into
knots and brings tears to my eyes. Luckily, I live on a quiet street
and do not run into this very often. I even get upset over a squirrel
or raccoon, even a skunk. I think that maybe now there are babies
left to starve. I have picked up many a cat hit by a car and taken
it to the owners, most of the time still alive. I have never hit
an animal that I know of, and I am so careful driving down roads
at night, and have stopped to let "critters" go by. I saw a black
lump in the road near my house two yrs ago, and had thought it was
my neighbors black cat. As I got closer, I recognized the two bright
orange feet of one of his black geese. I called his next door neighbor
as I didn't know him, and asked her to call him. This was how I
met him. I hope he didn't think that I had hit it. I couldn't
stand the thought of it being run over again and again.

I have lost cats to cars, so I have indoor cats to avoid this.
But now that I have the barn, I would like some cats out there.

Keep your chin up, because, you care!

That is very sad. It was kind of you to care so much to try
and locate the owners. Hope you feel better soon.

3361.3I know how you feel!AIMHI::SJOHNSONThu Feb 22 1990 14:2416
I had the same thing happen to me about 5 months ago. I was leaving
work at 5pm and there he was laying on Continental Blvd. He had just
been hit (I think) - he was a large orange & white male cat. No one
had stopped to pick him up. I turned my car around and lifted him off
to the side of the road. He was still warm and I had convinced myself
that he was still alive - but he wasn't. Fortunately there were other
people that had stopped to assist me and convince me that he had died!
I just wouldn't believe it - it was very, very sad!!!! I didn't know
what to do w/ the body. He could have come from so many different
houses. I called the Merrimack animal control to remove the body and
I also notified a local Vet - should anyone call looking for him.
There were also a couple neighbors walking by who said that they would
check w/ some other neighbors to see who's he was.

    I know how you feel!

It was so kind of you to stop. I hope you feel better soon, I hope it
helps you to know that we think you did the right thing, the kind
thing, the humane thing. (It is not always easy to be all of those
    things at once.)

3361.5Need some ideasCISM::LOBOVRiding the storm outThu Feb 22 1990 16:5615

I went home at lunch today and the cat was still where I left it.
I went to a house and asked the gentleman if he had a black cat
and if so was he/she o.k. He said " oh ours is o.k., I saw it today".
I asked him if he knew of anyone else that had a black cat.. He
    had no idea.

Is there anybody/place that I can call that will take the cat away?
I hate to think that the cat will just remain where it is. If the
ground was softer I would dig him/her a suitable grave down by the
    river.

Call your town Animal control officer again. Or, put the cat
in a box and take it there yourself.
We had a skunk hit in front of our house at the beginning of
a holiday weekend and it took two calls the following Tuesday
to get them out there to pick it up.
      Good luck.

If there's no animal control officer, the Police Dept. might do this.

p.s. you might check the lost columns of the local paper for the owners.

re: -1 Thanks for the tip! I never thought of that.

I called the Dog officer and she said that she would go get it right
away. I certainly hope so. I cringe every time I think of it.

I think I definitely need a trip to my mom's house so I can give
some loving to Pina and Tigger.

Thanks for all the help and the kind words. "Feline" is great,
where else would SO MANY people care!

The dog officer did come and pick up the cat yesterday. That makes
    me feel a lot better.

I also looked in the paper and did not see any mention of a black
kittie missing, I am going to look in the local supermarkets today.
I want to make sure that I do my best to find his/her owners I would
hate to lose a cat and not know what happened to them.

Some papers will let you run a free found ad. Also, the oweners may not
have an ad in until a few days from now, as it will take time for them
to realize the cat is "lost" and then it takes some time to get
    an ad into the paper.

Hopefully they will check with the dog officer.

3361.13You did the right thing.CLT::KOBAL::CJOHNSONEat, drink and see Jerry!Thu Mar 01 1990 17:1428

That was really kind of you to do. It's a shame to see animals on the
side of the road. One nite, my friends and I were driving down this
dark and curvy road, when I told her to stop the car, well actually
I yelled. She slammed on the brakes and in front of the car was
a huge mother racoon with her little babies trailing behind. They
had there fronts paws up because they were so afraid we were going
to hit them. Then the mother waddled across the road and her 6
babies followed. Thank God we didn't hit them.

I found a cat that had been hit right near my driveway. I called
the Nashua Police dept. to get the Animal Control Van down to
take the cat away. I guess they didn't have time because eventually
the Public Works Dept. came with an orange dump trunk, took a shovel
and flung the cat into the truck, like he was shoveling snow. Of
all the disgusting, uncaring &*&$#@! things to do! Don't people
realize that you should show as much respect for a deceased animal
as you would a human being? Sometimes I wonder if people really
still care about animals, I see so many dead on the road and I wonder
if some of them were done purposely. When I start feeling this way
I'll get right into the Feline Notes File because here are so many
people who love and care about animals, it makes me feel much better!

I have noticed a huge increase in the number of cats that I see
dead on the side of the roads. With spring here, the cats are starting
to wander again. That is what I think is the cause of the increase.

Those of you that let your cats out, be careful. Keep them in at
    night if you can.
