3292.0. "Mitty wants to move to Florida..." by AIMHI::SJOHNSON () Mon Jan 29 1990 14:25

My Mitty from time to time likes to lie on our heater vents. She does
this quite often and usually stays on it for a while- sometimes even
when the heat is coming out full force. She is a short haired
Tortoise-shell that is about 2 - 2 1/2 years old. We keep our house
at around 64 degrees while we are there and slightly lower while we're
at work. I think she wants us to move to Florida year round.

Is this a problem that I should look into or are there other cats out
    there doing the same thing?

A cute story that goes along w/ this, is that I walked into the
bathroom the other morning to find Mitty sitting over the vent which
is below the toilet paper roll w/ tiolet paper wrapped around her. I
wished I had my camera that very moment - I'm regretting it now!

    Thanks,
    Sonia

3292.1Naturally, the twins are like this, tooVAXWRK::SKALTSISDebMon Jan 29 1990 14:428
Well, my twins are heat seekers too and sometimes they really worry me.
I've got an older house with steam radiators and they will sit right
against or on top of the radiators. I wound up putting a kitty bed on
the radiator that overlooks the window in the bathroom and Eirene has
taken up residence in it for the winter. Oh well, at least I don't have
to worry about her burning herself anymore.

3292.2you think that's hot????WILKIE::IVESMon Jan 29 1990 15:4317
We had a burmese that loved heat. When we live in North Conway,
NH, he layed on the hear registers that were in the floor and his
fur as short as it was would blow when the heat came on. HOWEVER
when we moved to Florida he loved it.!!! There were days, when it
was so hot outside that it wasn't fit to be out there and we would
find him, laying on the cement in the driveway in the boiling sun,
and we would go out to bring him inside, and his fur was so hot
you could barely have it touch your skin. NOW that's hot......

He stayed in the air conditioned house for 15 to 20 minutes and
then cried to go out again, and into the sun shine. When we moved
up north poor Daktari had to adjust to cold climate again, which
    he did.

These fur faces sure are a hilarious bunch.

3292.3Fours company.....BOOVX1::MANDILEMon Jan 29 1990 15:5612
We have all four in the waterbed at night! Two under the
covers, and two on top at the foot of the bed. This took some
getting used to by my husband who had never had cats before.
During DEC when it was -0, you could either find the guys all
on the waterbed, or curled up on the cement floor in front of
the wood stove. And I mean about two inches from the stove!

But, if you want to find out where all the cats are in my house,
you just have to bring out a blanket and sit on the couch.
    INSTANT company!

My Smokey loves to sit facing our baseboard vent with the hot air
blowing right on him. He looks like a fighter pilot - minus the scarf
    - as he faces right into the hot blowing air. We call it heat-bathing.
Sometimes he scrunches himself into a human-like sitting position
exposing his privates to the heat as well. He is rather comical
looking and I swear his whiskers are curling......

Robin is also a heat-seeker. She loves to lie on top of the heating vents
when the furnace kicks on. After all the cold days she spent outside, I think
she considers it her privilege...

Julie is a different type of heat-seeker...she has to be under the down
comforter. I don't know how she stands the heat...

3292.6SMURF::S_FRASERC'mon everybody! Smurf's up!Mon Jan 29 1990 17:0813

We have forced hot water heat, so the radiators are really just
baseboard heaters. Our two little Siamese have figured out ways to
stand on them to keep their paws warm in the winter - they can only do
three paws at once though :^} They also fight for the small space on
top of the oil burner, and like others mentioned, they're waterbed
    lovers too.

For Christmas, Andy got me one of those 'Cuddle-ups' - an electrically
heated throw to snuggle under while watching TV. I'm *never* alone!

Brandi loves to lay on top of the heating vents. In the morning,
while we're getting ready for work, her favorite spot is the one
in the bedroom. She'll sit there till we pick her up and move her.
(Kitties aren't allowed in the bedroom when we're not home..they
like my pierrot dolls too much!!) Duke will sit next to them.
And he's also a sun bather. Sasha lays in front of the
refrigerator. There's a vent of some kind along the bottom.
Haven't check though to see if it's cool or warm air that's being
    	blown out.

And like most of the other kitties here, if we're on the couch,
with a blanket, we have 3 of 4 cats with us!! (4 if we pick up
    	Chloe and put her there)

In the upstairs master bath, the furnace vent is arranged to come out
in the toe space when you stand in front of either sink. Very nice on a
cold morning. Well, Doobie figured that out right away, so every
morning here would be Doobie jammed (sorta) in the toe space and I have
to stand back from the sink to shave, etc. Naturally, she'd only lay
in front of my sink and never Jane's.

We have forced hot water heat with the big silver radiators. The
radiator in the kitchen is smaller and made to fit under the window.
Bumpytail and Mao have taken up residence there- Bumpy practically
100% of the time. I finally gave in and put their fake-fur blanket
on the radiator. They LOVE it. Bumpy likes it better than the
    waterbed ("Too crowded Mom")

Panther Jane is definately a heat seeker. She is an all black Siamese
cross with the softest, (one friend says she feels like mink, Panther
was very pleased at the compliment.) thinest fur you could imagine.

We have forced hot water heat with those baseboards. Panther has her
"Kitty cave" (large cat carrier with blanket in it) where the heaters
meet in the corner. She only comes out for three things, to eat, to
sleep under the covers with Mummie & Daddie, or to
    take a bath with Mummie.

That's right, we discovered that baths are very warm and very nice, and
didn't Spot do us a favor when she pushed us in one day? (She couldn't
have been trying to be mean or anything??!!)

Panther waits until the tub is full, she doesn't like the sound of
running water and will climb in the tub on her own. She loves it!!
She sits at my feet and just purrrsssss with her eyes half closed.

She likes getting out too. She gets rubbed all over with a nice fluffy
towel and she gets cuddles until she is dry. Sometimes she will let me
use the hair dryer on her, but usually it is too noisy.

She would like to go to Florida too, you see Grampa lives in Florida, in
West Plam Beach, she wants to go play bridge with Rose Kennedy's cat
and walk on the beach and SHOP on WORTH AVE!! (I really don't think I
can afford this cat, but I'll keep her anyway :-)

Let's just hope all these cats don't get together to charter a plane so
that they can all have vacation with Grampa in Florida (If I can't go
    no one is going!!)

Misty used to love to sit on the stainless steel griddle
on the gas stove. There is a 12 inch long pilot light under
the griddle so the griddle is always very warm. As you can
imagine, I used to worry that he would jump up there while
I had the gas burners on to cook something. He was always
put out when I made him get down. I'm sure he didn't understand
that I didn't want him to catch on fire while I was cooking
    dinner.

Misty is no longer with me but thank goodness he died of
old age and didn't go up in flames.

I have one heat seeker and one heat shunner.

Zelda loves the heat. I have steam radiators with covers. She will
sit on the cover in the dinng room for hours. It's neat - she can
watch the world go by at the same time.

When we have a fire in the fireplace, zelda, who usually is curled up
in the tightest ball ever on the couch, will spreeeeeaaaad out on the
floor in front of the fire and bake!!!

Bob, on the other hand, hates the heat. He lies along the bottom of
the front door and begs to go out, even on the coldest days.

Years ago I had a long haired white cat who also loved heat. We had an
enormous fireplace then and she would sit in one corner of it while the
fire was going. I always had fears of her going up in flames!!! She
never did - sadly had to become an outdoor only cat when bladder
weakness meant she couldn't control herself. So now she lives on a
farm and sleeps curled up to her favorite cow!!!

As soon as I've gotten under the covers at night, D.P. is right there
pushing his head under the comforter so he can crawl in and curl up
beside me with just his nose sticking out. He'll stay there all night
too until the old alarm goes off.

Thai sometimes crawls under and rests for awhile but as soon as he
hears any sound (inside or out), he's out like a shot to investigate.
His favorite place to keep warm is under the Afghan throw on my couch.
Often find "lumps" under that or my comforter when it's cool.

Buffy and Holly prefer my comforter to either sleep on or under; have
found Holly and Buffy curled up together many times on my bed. D.P.
and Buffy have also been known to curl up on my couch together to share
    body heat.

Midnight (my #5) and Thai are such pals now that they not only play and
sleep together, but often give eachother baths before napping.

Cookie (my toy poodle) has her own bed now as my bed is too crowded
with 5 furfaces at night. She even has her own little Afghan blanket
(that my Mom made for her); she gets covered over every night and
    expects it! ;-)
