3252.0. "WHAT'S YOUR CAT'S NAME & *WHY*" by CIVIC::MAZOLA () Wed Jan 17 1990 15:16

After reading through this conference, I've come across some pretty
UNIQUE names!! Ones like Sparky, T.K. Jellybean!!! SPOOKY!!

Don't get me WRONG!! I think they are all GEAT names!! Most names
reflect the personality of a cat, but some you just can't figure
out!! Only YOU know why you named him/her!!!

So this topic is created for you, to let us know just WHY or HOW you
came up with the name you did for your little "ball of love!!!"

    ===
Okay?? I'll start! - Buddy is my cats name, my fiance' named him
and it's pretty appropriate!!! He's a delightful cat (MOST of the
time) and HE keeps US company!!! (usually isn't the reason people get
cats is to keep THEM company??!!)

Anyway, he follows us around the house anytime we get up from a chair
or the couch.. He runs to greet us at the door when we come home from a
hard day's work (writing these notes ;^} ) and sits on our lap and
LOVES us to pet him and hug him (we DO!!) but them we stop after oh..
lets say 20 minutes or even a 1/2 hour of CONSTANT hugs and kisses!!
He wants more ( HA! what male DOSEN'T??!)

When I get up to go to the bathroom, he's right behind me.. I make him
wait outside the door till I'm done- and he does! he waits for me,
then he'll jump up on the sink and rubs up against me when I wash my
hands... of course I have to pat him with my face, I rub my nose and
my cheeck on the top of his head- he loves it! he turns the volume up
    to "jackhammer" hee hee hee..

he's a cutie-- and quite UNIQUE I might add!! But that's what this
conference is all about, to express your feelings.. this one in turn,
makes me appreciate him all the more... 8^)

3252.1DON'T TEMPT FATE!ROLL::MOREAUKelleyWed Jan 17 1990 15:4014
My cat's name is "Fate". I love him so much. Like so many other cats,
he is unique. He's funny, faithful, bossy and loves to be loved.

My husband and I were living in an apartment where there were no pets allowed.
We always said that as soon as we bought a house, the first thing we would
do would be to get a kitty. We had just started looking at houses and did
not really plan on being able to buy on before one year. But, as "fate" would
have it, we found the perfect house--totally by accident!! At the same time
a friend of a friend's kitty was having kittens. Knowing that I wanted a fluffy
kitty he offered one of kittens to me. The timing was perfect. Just after we
moved into the new house, the kitten was able to leave his mother. We decided
to name him "Fate". Because, if it were not for "fate" we would not be able
to share our home with such a great kitty!

3252.2Introducing Fudge (the Pseudo Manx)COMICS::WARNESCapitulation in the face of defeat.Wed Jan 17 1990 15:4923
Wow! I think this is gonna be one of those notes with a *HUGE* number
of replies, so I'd like to be in at .1 to get things going.

My cat's name is Fudge and has been mentioned once before in this
conference. (See Pseudo Manx Cats). He's about 2yrs old and, if
you've read the aforementioned note you'd know he has only a stub
of a tail to boast of! He came originally from a Rescue Center,
minus the tail. He's of medium to large build - ginger tabby with
    absolutely mesmeric amber eyes.

His name comes from his coloring when I first saw him - his coat
was quite dusty, and the stripes not very prominent giving a
fudge-like color ... the rest is history, though I'd made my mind up
before seeing him to call him Max. The latter name being quite
macho-sounding didn't fit his personality so it was dropped.

I've another cat, which I will introduce in another reply to this
note. Thanks for posting it in the first place. It's fascinating
where some of these feline names originate - for instance I knew
someone with a cat called AHAB -- but that's another story!

3252.3what's in a name?STAR::BARTHWed Jan 17 1990 15:5118
Tenzing is named after Tenzing Norgay, the Sherpa guide who accompanied
Sir Edmund Hilary up Mt. Everest. I named her Tenzing because she
    loves to climb.

Tristan is named after a number of Tristans. There's the knight of the
round table, and the character from All Creature's Great and Small. I
chose it because when we got him he was very sick and looked pretty
pathetic. I figured he needed a noble, elegant name for him to live
up to. Also, he's a very silly cat, which reminded me of the vet from
    the show.

Max is named after Mad Max, the post-holocaust character played by Mel
Gibson. Max used to be a stray tomcat, and has scars on his eyelid and
ears. He looks really tough and macho, yet is very gentle and kind,
like the character. Also, Ed insists that 3 is cat_max, so he's also
    our max cat.

Ok, so I missed out on getting in at .1 !

Still, Fate sounds nice enough to deserve the top slot.

3252.5Casino & MauiDELREY::WEYER_JIShake-n-BakeWed Jan 17 1990 16:1129
We picked our first kitten out from a litter of 5. She is a brown
tabby with stripes clear down to the end of her tail. It wasn't until
after we brought her home that we realized we had not picked out a name
yet. After much consideration, we named her "Casino", because my
husband and I have so much fun at the casinos in Laughlin, Nevada - and
the last time we were there we saw a big cat outside one of those
casinos that looked alot like our new kitten. Her name reminds us of
all the good times we had there.

Our second kitten belonged to the same litter, but she had been
promised to another family before we saw her. She is a fluffy grey
with traces of tabby stripes. Her first family named her Molly, but
they could not keep her because their other 2 older cats were objecting
by messing up the furniture and roughing-up the new kitten. So the
original owner called us up when Molly was returned. Naturally, we
snapped her up, to be a partner for Casino and because she was too cute
to not want her. I did not like the name Molly, but we wanted a name
to sound similar because she was used to the sound of her name already.
We selected "Maui" - again for a place we have been to and had a
    wonderful time.

Casino & Maui are the greatest! They are now 1 year old and big,
healthy cats. Maui always looks fluffy and likes to be around us.
Casino has smooth, shiny fur and is much stronger than Maui. Casino
likes to sit on us when she wants to. Both are friendly cats, even to
our friends who come and visit. We are so happy to have them as our
    "kids".

3252.6Charlie and ShakaSONATA::WILCOXWed Jan 17 1990 16:1514
My Blue Persian is named Charlie. I got him as a kitten and thought I
was getting a female cat. I wanted an exotic name for "her" and
decided on Shalimar (since it is also my favorite perfume). When I
took "her" to the vet's for a short shortly after, I was told she was a
he. The name Shalimar didn't seem to fit a male to me, but I had
already been calling the kitten by name so wanted something similar.
It sure isn't exotic, but it fits him now. He is the sweetest, most
laid-back, and humorous cat I have ever known.

My other cat, a Shaded Silver Persian, I just acquired last spring was
already named Shaka. She seems to fit her name. She's very shy and
much more reserved than Charlie and needed the more exotic name.

When my husband and I were looking for kittens a couple of years
ago, we were trying to think some good names for them (as anyone
would do). I thought it would be neat to have a male named NIKE
and the female to be named PUMA (just like the sneakers). So we
ventured out to find two kittens. But at the time we could only
get a female and the name Puma alone, just didn't fit. So we
decided to change her name to Nikki (it just fit her) she is a
black and grey tiger and very freindly. Finally, 6 months later
we found a male kitten a cute little yellow tiger, so we brought
him home and named him Sammy (commom, but I had a cat named Sam
when I was younger and he got killed by a car, and he was a tiger
also) Nikki took Sammy in under her wing as if he was her own son,
they are the best of friends and keep EACH OTHER company.

It's amazing how attached you become to your pets but its true.
Sammy almost died last week, he came down with a kidney infection,
and was full of poison. I rushed him to the vet Tuesday morning
and they started prepping him for a catheter before I was out the door.
Well, it was not a good week, needless to say. But the vet said
he is a strong cat and very lucky. He is home now and has just
about recovered. It just wasn't the same without him around. I never
thought I would be praying for a cat. But both my husband and I found
out real fast how much we CARE about our kids (we don't have any of
our own yet) so for now they're all we got.

The naming of our three babies came easily. Pippin came from the
shelter and was put out in a mobile adoption location through the
SPCA. I had just lost my 18 year old Siames and just couldn't get
another Siamese for a while so I decided I wanted a black cat with
green eyes. Well, there she was, 6 weeks old with these great big
green eyes that looked just like Pippin apples - so it was Pippin
    straight off.

Then came Gino 2 months later. He's a seal point Siamese and I
knew I would name him Gino because of something my grandmother had
said to me when I had Ting-Ling. My grandmother was Italian and
never spoke much english and when I named Ting she said to me in
Italian "What kind of name is Ting-Ling? You should have named
him GINO!" So this baby was named for my grandmother who loved
kitties very much. Also we had seen a movie where the hit man/
heavy was this big guy named Gino - well Gino is a big cat and he
lumbers like a real menace - but in fact is is the most gentle and
affectionate of the three. He Meooooow's with an Italian accent!

4 Years later was found Stitch - abandoned by his mom in a feral
environment and left with his littermates at the tender age of 24/48
hours old in a garden down the way from us. He had been attacked
during the nite and had a cut on his neck - the vet sutured it and
he had 3-4 very obvious stitches- so when we were able to take him
home with us my husband named him Stitch (poor little guy had quite
a start in life) but he turned out to be a real stitch - always
has us lauging and on our toes.

I guess most names have a story to go with them and it's really
interesting to find out how our babies got their names. Lately I've
been thinking of a name for #4 - I'm in the process of thinking
of a way to smuggle another one in without the landlady ever finding
out - but she found out about #3 and almost asked us to leave.
Maybe it's time for us to move - I'm getting the kitten itch again.

3252.9Strange but true...STNING::DSM_SECRainbow In The DarkWed Jan 17 1990 18:1929

Taco.. well, he was the cutest little kitten! He is black and white,
and has markings pretty much like Sylvester the cat, but when
we got him we were told it was a girl, so that name wouldn't
do. I was looking at him while I was eating mexican food one
night at home, and he was sharing it with me, this cute little
dopey look on his face, and i thought about calling him Pedro,
or something Mexican like that, but still thought he was a
girl, and then the name Taco popped into my head. When I said
it he looked at me rather approvingly, and the name fit him and
his personality so well that it stuck....

JellyBean... well, she was the most chubby fuzzy little grey tiger
striped kitten! She never did get too big, but she did thin
out a lot. She was shaped just like a jellybean, and she had
this funny sort of sweet disposition that the name popped into
my mind and stuck with her. We have taken to calling her String
Bean lately because she got a lot thinner, but normally it's
           Beaner...

Sparky... well, he is my favorite of the gang (i always save the best
for last). When I went to a cat show to see him (he was for
sale by a Maine Coon Cat breeder) he was the most adorable cat
i had ever seen. His eyes really melted me, this sparkle they
had in them. His gentle nature. He is a real sweetheart, and so
talkative, and reminded me a little of a dog that I used to have
that was named Sparky. So the name came to be. And fit him it
           does to a T !!!

Chammie: not to much to tell here..She was my Mothers cat at first and
she called her "ShoSho" and I just did'nt like it, so I want
to call her somthing close to ShoSho and Chammie kidna fit
she is a Blue Lynx Point and she is VERY soft just like a
              Chammie cloth.

Carmle: is a calico and is mostly Carmelie Colors so it just fit..
she is also a HOLLY TERROR or paws and you can streach out
    	      her name to CAMACZZIE.

Dusty is my black smoke persian. When I brought him home, he was such
a fuzz ball, and even though I wanted a more unique name, all I could
think of was "he looks like a dustball that's been under your bed for
months" - so, we named him Dusty. Somehow, I wish I could have come up
with a clean-sounding name for him, because he just loves to roll in
any kind of dust, sawdust, you-name-it!

Let me see:

Hannah - a flame-point (orange tabby cat face,feet,tail,ears) american
short hair....I dunno, a name for a "redhead" seemed right
and I think of Hannah as a redhead name. She has "freckles"
on her nose so she could have been named something else, but
she just IS a Hannah....and don't anyone forget it!

Nicky - Well, really Sir Nicholas of Longtail....he is a long, lean
short-haired gray and white tuxedo cat WITH a 15 inch long
tail. It is the longest cat tail I've ever seen so his name
	 was a natural.

Samson - I always wanted a black cat named Samantha and I though I had
one when I got Sam as an 8-week old baby. When I took "her"
in to be spayed, they shaved "her" tummy - only to find the
testicles that we had missed under all that fur...OOPS! The
vet called to tell me of the change in plans and I decided
Samson was a better name....Samson was neutered - but he
wouldn't roll over for a tummy rub for 4 months - until all
	 his hair grew back!

3252.13The naming of a cat is a difficult matter...MICLUS::MTAGWed Jan 17 1990 18:4735
I have 3 cats and my old neighbor's daughter named two of them - first
names only. I gave them their full names.

GONEZO: Gonezalo Aloycious Oscar. He got 3 names because I thought
abut entering him in a cat show when he was a kitty and wanted him to
have a full name. Don't remember where I picked up Gonezalo, but
Aloycious comes from an old cat I used to have (who looked nothing like
Gonezo) and Oscar fits him. I even tried calling him Oscar for awhile.

BARNEY: Barneybus Alfred Theodore. Don't quite know where my neighbor
came up with Barney, except that he was a barn kitten so it fits.
Alfred seemed like a good middle name and Theodore is after Ted
Williams, who was associated through business with my father. This
initials, BAT fit him because he is truly a batty cat.

BENJAMIN: Benjamin Frederick. I'm Ben's 3rd owner and he came named
this way. He knew his name so I never changed it. The middle name of
Frederick comes from a cat I used to have (Aloycious' brother) who was
THE MOST CUDDLABLE cat I have ever known. Ben, being very cuddly also,
earned the privilege of having Frederick as his middle name. No third
    ("confirmation") name for him.

    *****

SAM: Samuel Charles Aaram. Sam was my first cat and his now my
    mother's. I got him when I was 12 1/2 and he's now almost 18 (oops - I
gave away my age!). We didn't know his sex and Sam was a safe name. I
was just confirmed when I got him, so being the good Catholic I was, I
baptized and confirmed him while taking a bath one night; hence the
names of Charles and Aaram (my brother thinking Aaram sounded
    biblical).

That's it for my "children". They're the best - most of the time.

    The house cats are:

    Tasia Marie (Aka Charm's Fanstasia)
    Joshua Arthur (Aka Charm's Joshua)
and their son, Spud (Aka Charm's Spudly Arthur). Spud just got
altered, and since he's now an "it" there's a very strong temptation
to change his name to Spit.

Then there's the barn cats - Reesy, Digger, Kit and Kaboodle.

All the girl cats(and horses, too) have my mother's name for their
middle names, and the boys have my SO's father's name.

Up til now I've only had two cats both Siamese The first lived
to be 19 years old and was named Susie Wong and we think it is cute
she was named by our children- Many years ago when the movie Susie
Wong was considered risque - went to a drive-in and figured the
twins would go to sleep by the time the move came on well they didn't
and enjoyed the movie and fell in love with the actress playing
Susie Wong - thus our kitty became Susie Wong.

The siamese I have now is named Cho-cho-san for the opera Madame
Butterfly and because when we first got her she used to flit from
room to room landing wherever she pleased, just like a butterfly.
Needless to say she is bright as all of our fur faces and cute as
a button. She follows me around like a puppy and come when called
if it is for something she really likes like food or being alone
in the bathroom with me - behind closed door and away from the dog.

T.K.	Short for Tabby Kitty -- because he's a brown mac

Kelsey	Found in a book of baby names. I thought it was

Kirby	Again, thought the name was cute for a crazy,

Murdock	He came from the breeder already named for the "M"

Tilly - her full name is Chantilly Lace of Mysinhs. We had gotten
her in an odd way. I was at the vet with Winston, and this woman
came in with her 2 year old daughter and this tiny 5 week old kitten.
The woman was about 8 mos. and 28 days pregnant with her second
child. She said that she had just moved to our town, and that someone
had brought her the kitten as a housewarming gift, never asking
her if she wanted a cat. She thought that with the kitten being
so tiny, she better have it vaccinated right away. Well, the kitten
was the cutest ball of cream and white fluff that I had ever seen,
so I told her that if she decided that she couldn't handle a 2 year
old, a new baby, a new house, and a tiny kitten, to call me, and
I gave her my card. She called two days later. She was in labor,
her husband was on his way home, and her 2 year old was playing
in the litter box....could I come over right away and get the kitten??
Well, of course, I did. The kitten had the worst case of fleas,
ear mites and worms that I had ever seen, so I spent the next few
weeks medicating her constantly. At the end of the treatments,
she hated my guts. But, she loved Ken. Had Ken not loved her back,
we would have placed her with another family. But, at that moment,
when they were just about to say that they wanted her, Ken announced
to all of us that she was no longer available for adoption. He
named her Chantilly Lace due to her very feminine and beautiful
cream and white coloring. She and I have never been as close since
the medicating, and she can be downright obnoxious to me, so I wanted
Ken to name her Arsenic and Old Lace! :^)

Lyscentia - the latin root of the word licentious. Since licentious
means lacking legal or moral restraints, disregarding sexual
restraints, and wanton disregard for strict rules of correctness,
we thought this would be the perfect name for our first "home bred"
Birman queen. Seems she has lived up to her name, she was recently
caught cradle robbing, she seduced Moody, barely six months old
at the time, and now they are expecting in February. Since 1990
is the N year, I am thinking of naming one of her daughters
    Nymphomaniac.

Joui - is short for Jouissance, which is French for delight or joy.

Kyrielle - French for rigamarol. She is a real talker, but she
never really says anything important. :^)

mischief. Also a pun on "Low Key", as in his attitude
    		towards people -- very mellow.

Thor	alias "The Thunderkitty", who, even at 6 weeks, could make
more noise running around the house than a herd of
buffaloes. Named for the Norse god of thunder.

These are the official names; like everyone else, we have a vast set of
nicknames for these two... like "LokiLump" and "LokiLuv", depending on
his current mood, and like "ThorKitty" and "Squealer".

BAILEY - Bailey's Irish Cream - My blue-cream kitty. Jo Ann helped
me pick her out from Miller's Pet Adoption Center at the
flea market. We almost named her Sadie Painted Lady but
she reminded me alot of a cat Jo Ann once had whose name
             was Bailey.

AMELIA - Amelia Earhart - Brown Tabby and White. When I first was
convinced to take her home I kept wanting to call her Amanda.
A lady who showed her cats in our same area already had
a similar looking cat named Amanda so I managed to get
my mouth to say Amelia after some practice. The Earhart
got added on a short while later when I saw her take a
flying leap towards my sliding glass door. Tap it with
all 4 paws flat on the glass and fly off the other direction.

CARRIE - Carrie Nation - Blue and white. I met her at 4:00am when
she was crying her lungs out in my apt. parking lot. I
had no intention of keeping her but for some reason the
name Carrie Nation kept running through my head as if she
was telling me her name. My ex-boyfriend and I kept trying
to come up with names (after I decided to keep her) that
would incorporate the blue for her color. Bonnie Blue
and Lady Blue were just too dignified for this little terror.
Carrie Nation fits her perfectly. In fact, I have a friend
who thinks I've done her a terrible injustice by naming
her after such a disruptive person. It fits, honestly.

Abby Normal - Abby, a siamese mix, came with the name, and it fits.
In the movie, The Bride of Frankenstein, the brain came from Abby
Normal. Abby is a strange kitty at times, so Ab Normal sort of
stuck. She also answers to Abster, or Ab-bra-ca-dab-bra.

Spock - My husband surprised me with this kitty. He had the honor
of naming him Spock, after his favorite character on Star Trek.
My husband answered an ad for Spock, who was suppose to be a siamese
mix, and paid good MONEY for a sick cat that leaked from every opening.
We like to think we rescued him. Turns out Spock is some sort
of exotic long hair mix. Spock is incredibly healthy now and I
wouldn't trade him (or Abby) for anything. Spock also answers to
Spockster or Little Fart (for obvious reasons).

Hi, this is my first time writing in the conferance but i've been
reading it alot. I would for the firs time be more than happy to
tell you my cats name. My friends call me Dunkin and boys name is
Donuts. He's a big boy too! He averages about 17 to 18 pounds maybe
more now. Orange, long haired, sometimes he makes me think of a
Maine Coon. I've had him for five years now and he still thinks
he runs the household. He loves to ride in the truck in his own
sit on top of a big pillow I put down for him so he can look out
the window. Sometimes he'll come over and sit on my lap and put
his big paws on the bottom of the steering wheel and look straight
ahead like he's driving. Since i've had him he's been an indoor
cat but, when I get the collar and the leash he knows it's time
for outdoors. He goes crazy! One time when I had him outside someone
was jogging down the street and thought I had a dog on the end of
the leash.Gee I could sit here and talk all day about him, got to
    ge back to work.

    Thanks for listening.....

3252.22Snuggles & Orphan AnnieBRAT::JOSEPHSONThu Jan 18 1990 10:2816
My two girls names are Snuggles and Orphan Annie. Snuggles is
appropriately named because she just loves to snuggle and be cuddled.
As her veterinarian says "she's such a sweet cat".

I found Orphan Annie in a cardboard box in a corner of a dog pound
when I was working for a humane society. We kept her at the shelter
for over a year and nobody wanted her. She had a kind benefactor
who paid for her health care and food while she was there. Her
picture and story appeared in the Nashua Telegraph, Channel 9 and
WGIR radio. Still no one wanted her.

I ended up adopting her before I left the shelter because I couldn't
bear to part with her.....she had already adopted me before I even
know I would adopt her....so the name Orphan Annie.

    Every cat has a story (or two) :^}

Smudge - our Calico kitty, adopted from a shelter two years ago. Named
because of the brown smudge across her nose. She also has a black spot
shaped like a heart in the middle of her back. She's very dignified
and wouldn't be caught dead playing, as long as no one's watching, that
    is.

Tas - short for 'Tasmanian Devil' and that fits this neutered male
sealpoint Siamese. The only male cat in the house, he tries to assert
his dominance by chasing everyone else, and when he's playing, gets
this wild look in his big blue eyes. Talks back when yelled at.

Jennifurr - for no particular reason, but we liked the name. She's our
    bluepoint Siamese airhead - very cuddly and purry, but *dumb*! :^}

C.C. - stands for Compact Cat. She's Jenn's sister kitty, and was not
only the runt of the litter, but was also very ill as a baby, so was
very small when we got her. Since she's gotten healthy and happy and
very feisty, the letters stand for many other things, depending on her
or our mood of the time.

T.K. = That Kat (I know, it should be T.C. but T.K. sounded better).
		I call him T.F.K. when I'm mad... ;-)

Bandit = he came with the name. His previous owners thought his
markings on his face made him look like a Bandit. I don't
really agree but liked the name anyhow. He is anything
but a Bandit except when it comes to stealing cotton balls.
T.K. is more like a "bandit" .... he steals jewelry, hair
ties, caps, dried flowers, and anything else he is not
		supposed to touch.

Karen = my parents gave me that name since it sounded good with
	        the middle name Elaine

Dandelion (Dandy for short) When we got him he loved to play with the
dandelions in our lawn. Also he loves chasing (and eating) the grass
hoppers. He is such a good cat.

I will try and be brief (most of you know why !!) - The majority of my
furfaces are named for characters in the book Dr. Zhivago, which is my
    favorite book/movie.

Sasha - Seal point siamese applehead - the oldest - Yurii's son
KoKo - Seal point siamese applehead - one of the three little maids
Nikolas - all black - a Dr. Z character (different spelling) - my buddy !
Timothy - all black - was named Truman, but I liked Timothy
Alexander - all black- a Dr. Z character - Sasha is a nickname of Alex
                                     I used both names!
Yurii Andreiveich - all white blue eyed boy - like the snow
in the movie - the movie character is so 'dark'
that the contrast was nice - both seem laid back!
                        ( cat and character)
Lara The Lady - brown pathed tabby - black, brown, red, white
Ha, she ain't no lady, this girl! A very well
named cat - if anyone has ever seen her flat
on her back on a judging table, some folks call
her 'slut kitty' - Yurii's mistress ! Lara is a
Katenka Dolly - Katenka is Yurii and Lara's child out of wedlock
she is mostly white with red, brown, black - a nice
combination of colors from both Yurii & Lara.
It was fitting that she become Katenka.
    Ivan Ivanovich - A Dr. Z character - Ivan is a 16 lb. brown
                         tabby/white boy - very handsome!
Mister Miyagi - GiGi came home from the Lowell Humane Society with
Lara - fighting all the way - when I put him down
on the livingroom floor, he sat up on his hind legs
and started boxing with his front paws - all 2 lbs
of himself! He is a beautiful black and white boy!
His tail is probbly a foot and a half long!
SilVee - Sweet SilVee - my 1st longhair - soft muted color
striking tabby face - pink nose - quiet meow.
a real love baby girl- SilVee is for QuickSilver
Pashenka Shelton - my red classic tabby and white baby boy - this boy
had a tough start - a very kind lady found him
wandering around her back yard in Shelton CT, took
him in and loved him to pieces - her son was VERY
allergic, but they kept him as long as they could.
                        This kind lady was Ray Fucci's mother-in-law - I
heard about him and wanted him - he is named for
both Dr. Z and the town he was born in.
    Misha - a Dr. Z character - Misha is a silver tabby
american shorthair - my sweet boy - handsome!
Malenka Dolly - my LinkaMousie - my 4 lb wonder girl - Katenka's
litter mate - she should have died, but she didn't
and now she's mine! Soft, sweet, quiet,
                        loving,and so pretty.
Victoria Dolly - my DEC lobby girl - there was one left, how could I
not take her - a pretty calico like her two
                        sisters,Katenka and Malenka - a Dr. Z character!!
Terror - My free-fed Cornish Rex - he came named - he is
a Beast baby - brown tabby with unreal green eyes!
There are no words to describe this boy - he must
                        be experienced!
Charlie - we call him Chow Lee - Charlie spent his first 2
years wandering the roads of Candia - he's mine
now - I really ran out of names when he came home
He's as soft as a bunny - green eyed brown tabby
and white - so white! I think Ivan is a little
jealous! They look a bunch alike!
    Gee did I forget someone?

    ah,

Cattyshack's Tiger Lily of EmacX - Lil - probably the most aptly
Brown Patched Tabby Exotic Shorthair named of the bunch! She
                                              really should be wearing
                                              a black leather jacket
                                              boots, and a motorcycle
                                              helmet - she really looks
                                              like a little toughie boy!
                                              No dainty lady, this kid!
I think the next kid (execpt for Lil's kids) will be named:

                    WhoEverTheHe&lYouAre

E.T., a very luck person to be owned by some much love!!

Hello, I would like to introduce myself and my cat. My name is Valerie
and my cat's name is Rusty. We both have red hair. I received Rusty
as a Christmas present from my husband. Rusty was found by a Navy
family stationed at Kittery, MA. They couldn't keep him because they
had two cats that did not get along with Rusty. Rusty is an ex-tom
cat, big in size and very friendly. Since Rusty is pretty new, I do
not have to much to say about him. As time goes by, I'm sure I will
have some "cat tails" to tell everyone about.

    Regards,

is adopted us, 3 years ago, she was a stray in our neighborhood. She
looked about 1 years old and "LOOKED"................scruffy looking.
He long hair was here and there and she was a poor sight to see. So my
husband named her SCRUFFY and that has kept. We call her,

Amber - she has an amber glow to her fur so this name just popped
into my head when I first saw her.

Buster Brown - Amber's son. We found Amber and her 4 baby boys
on the street's of Hudson, MA when they were only 2 days
old. As they grew I began naming them. Buster used to
push his way through the other babies to get to his food
or anywhere else he wanted to go. One day I saw this and
said to him "Hey Buster, where do you think you're doing?"
and the name stuck. Brown got added later just naturally.

Pistachio - She came to us already named and I liked it!

Scooter - She also came to us already named. I was going to change
it but after witnessing her scooting around the floor fast
as all get out, it fits. And she doesn't run...she really
does scoot! She has nerve damage to her left front leg
and doesn't use it well, so this effects her ability to
really run. But she is the fastest scooter I've ever
seen. And she gets into major trouble too. One night
she knocked over a clay flower pot and it landed right
on her good front leg. Next thing you know there's this
terrified pained kitty trying to run with two hurt legs!
Scared me half to death. She's fine now, but really full
    	    of beans! ;-)

My cat's name is Felix. I got her when I was 9 yrs old (I wonder why I
picked that name?). I am now 26!! That's right Felix is 17 yrs old!!
Those of you Feline readers may remember my note 3072, Under the Knife?
That's my felix. By the way, she's put on double her weight back since
the surgery. She's really come along way!

Yes, Felix is a SHE! We didn't know that until her kittens were born
(or at least till she was pregnant w/them), sometimes we call her
    Fee-bees for short.

3252.32Oliver!SUBURB::ODONNELLJThu Jan 18 1990 19:2123
We got our kitten from a Rescue Centre after our last little cat
died. We had read in the paper about a year old cat who'd been shot
and was waiting for a home, but when we got there, the cat had already
been placed. We looked around all the cats there - some of them
feral and even two Burmese which were not allowed to be taken because
they beat up any other cat they came into contact.
There was only one kitten - a little black and white male. He was
on his own and mewed so pitifully when we went past that we HAD
to pick him up. He then purred like a little motorbike and rubbed
up against our faces. When we tried to put him back, he didn't want
to go at all. He cried every time we went near him and it was obvious
that HE had chosen US. We took him.
He had bad diarrheoa and was very thin when we got him.
"He's not keen on fish." they told us at the Centre. Well, you would
never have believed it! Our next door neighbour got him a huge slab
of fish from the market the day after we got him, meant to last
him the week. Not only did he polish it off in one day, but also
a tin of salmon and 5 chicken wings.
His huge, pleading eyes and his habit of sitting by his food-bowl
and meouwing loudly and pitifully soon named him.
I've always loved Dickens' novels, so 'Oliver' he became.

And, no, his appetite hasn't really diminished over the months!

aja - Taken from the Steely Dan song. The line goes...
"aja, when all my dime-dancing is thru, I run to you".

Ex- and myself thought it would be a nice name for a
girl should we ever decide to have one. Well, sometime
later she moved out and the little white kitten moved
in. I figured it wouldn't be too well received to try
and use the name at some point in the future. ("WHAT??
You picked the name out with someone else!!! {whap!}"),
so I gave it to the cat.

Edd - A mistake stemming from the use of pain-killers during
childbirth in the early '50s. By the time it was realized
all the papers (birth certificate, title, registration)
had been filled out so mom and dad just said to hell
with it. Sounds horrible with Elaine. Luckily that's
                 not my middle name.

Well...my 2 boys got their names from.....a liquor store!!!

I was trying to think of names...preferring the common joe blow
type of names (like charlie, norm, etc) when I drove by the liquor
    store a few blocks away...FRANK & JACK's LIQUOR....so...
my 2 boys are Frank and Jack ..or Franklin and Jackson when I'm
mad..!! (didn't you hate when your mom called you by your full
name..??) ...also makes it kind of fun when people call you,
ask what you're doing, and you come back with " oh, Frank's on
my lap, and Jack's laying on the bed" or "the boys and I were
    just playing in the bedroom.."....;-)

Kat (short for Kathy, short for Kathleen, parents wanted a
             nice irish name..)

    Here's my two:

Zildjian - my husband named this kitty. After our 1st year of
marriage, I asked Michael if he would mind getting a kitty - he was not
too keen on the idea (never liked cats). WELLLLL.... ever since she has
been his kitty. I let him name her - he plays the drums and Zildjian
are the cymbols he uses. She is basically white and macral (SP?) tabby
on her forehead, back and tail. She is the "miss priss" of the family
(Don't touch me - I spend all day grooming myself) and has the silkiest
fur. Nicknames - Wits-a-wits (when I sing to her, this is the name I
use), Baby, BI**H cuz she can be.

Paradiddle - we got her after my begging for another cat. Paradidle is
a rudiment name (for those who know perussion - the hubby named her
too) and she is a beautiful cat! She is a mixture of an orange tiger
and a black tiger - just beautiful! I have never seen a coat like
this - not even in books. This is a real cat - all the instincts a cat
usually has she has them all! Nicknames - SPUNKY (Cuz she is), garbage
cat cuz she'll eat anything, and Bum and I won't explain this one.

I am in the process of begging for a third fur-face. I have been
working on my husband for 5 months now and the time is still not right.
I keep praying a stray will land in our yard and I know he couldn't
resist saving a baby. I am sure one will find us some day. Don't get
the wrong idea, now, he absolutely *loves* our babies. I have
definitely turned him into a feline lover.

Smoke -	Oldest of my bunch, I've had her since kittenhood in
the summer of '79. All silver/gray, she looks like
a cloud of smoke. Alternate name = "Mew", stated as
a fact and not a question (Mew?)

Nightmare -	My ex-wife's cat. Original name was "Kitty Kavanaugh",
and I hve no idea where the ex- came up with that one.
I renamed the cat after we seperated, to better reflect
    		her behavioural tendencies.

Sneakers -	Nightmare's son. All black, with only his rear paws
colored white, and a small white beard and whiskers.
Named for the rear paws coloration, 'cause they look
    		like he's wearing sneakers.

Nova -	Nightmare's daughter. My girlfriend named this one,
'cause I was fresh out of ideas. She just thought
the name sounded nice. I agreed, because with her
mixed black and white coloring, she looks like the
whiteness of an exploding star in the blackness of
space. The word also means "new" in Latin, so it is
    		doubly apropos.

Here's mine - I found Oliver at the shelter. He already had the name
and evidentally had been there for a while. I kept it because it
seem appropriate as I'm sure he was orphanned - no one could have
just abandonned (sp) him - he's too sweet. I also loved the movie Oliver.
Is it "somewhere, somehow there is a etc." I'm trying to remember
    the music.

Incidentally, I really do enjoy hearing about the other Oliver here.
He sounds wonderful as do all our babies.

    Have a great weekend!!!

I wanted another Korat kitten to go with the
one I already had for company. When we got to
the breeders, she had * 11 * kittens (total of
19 cats running around) for us to choose from.
Well, to make a long story short, she tossed
this white stuffed buffalo onto the floor to
get all the kittens in one place. They all attacked
this buffalo, biting and chewing on it. They lost
interest fast, as kittens do, all but one who killed
this buffalo many times over. He was the one we brought
home. (we actually brought home two, though, but thats
    another story)

His name? B.K. (short for Buffalo Killer!)

Oops, forgot to mention the rest of the guys.

Casey - B.K.s Brother. It was K.C. short for Kitty Cat,
or Korat Cat, but it got spelled wrong at the
    	    vets and it stuck.

Rusty - Orange tabby w/white. I had two Rusty's growing
up, and always favored this name. This is Rusty #3.

Pepper- Black/brown tappy w/white. As a 5 week old kitten,
it looked like someone had sprinkled pepper all over
            his face. Rusty's brother.

Noel - What else do you call a female kitten dropped off
in your front yard three days befre Xmas?

Also, Fred the Netherland Dwarf bunny, named so because my
husband insists on calling everything Fred.
and Puff, my $10 MSPCA special bunny, already named by them
and I assume because she is mostly white with Himilayan markings.
And the Horse, "Ranger's Angel", dumb name because its a He, but
His dad was Chips Texas RANGER, and mom was ANGELa's Choice. He
was called Angel as his dad was there and called Ranger, and it
    stuck.

We have 2 seal point Siamese cats.

One cat, Selina, came already named. She was used to it and we
    didn't want to change it.

Selina had a litter of 5. My husband picked out one to keep. He
named him "MIJO" which is pronounced mee-hoe. It's the spanish
combination of mi hijo for "my son". Mijo fits his name purrrfectly.
He's my husband's little baby. So Mijo is "my son" for Selina who is
his biological mom and "my son" for the not-so-biological-but-wished-
he-was father for my husband Amaro.

Ok, lets see if I can remember this:

Bumpy-tail - She was already named when I got her, and for those
of you who have met her, you know the reason for the name
is obvious. Her tail is about 1/2 normal length and curls
up at the end like the top of a violin. Probably part
                 manx.

Xiao-Mao - Is chinese for "Little Cat" or Kitten.

Isis - Jack named her - I believe after the black cat in the
firt generation Star Trek episode "Gary Seven"

Talegre Dundee MacTavish - The Dundee part comes from a wonderful
queen that my breeder has who also happens to be Bonnie's
Mommy. I don't remember where MacTavish comes from.
                Talegre is Tony's cattery name.

Flame - or Cattyshack's Flaming Star - I know the Flame part
comes from his daddy's name: Fire. cattyshack is
Cindy Gerry's cattery. You'll have to get the rest
                of the details from her.

Jesse James II - was named in honor of the grey and white x-stray
who was adopted by Jo Cordes Brown and her family and
who passed away earlier this fiscal year.

Dusty - First of the Weymouth Commons cats. Also named for an
obvious reason - he was dusty. It suits him because he's
a longhair who's always rolling around on the floor cause
                he's always so happy.

Bob - Well, he looks like a "Bob". Aka Tweeter Bob or Mother
Bob. Actually his full name is now: Putiput's Tweeter
                Bob. Jack named him.

Jasmine - Jack also picked this name. He "Says" that Jazzie told him
that this is her name. It really does suit her.

Christie Kay - short for Christmas Kitten. I named her this because
she was netted on Christmas Day.

Talegre's Bonnie Bairn MacTavish of Putiput
Such a big name for such a little kitten, and, Yes, I know
it won't all fit. I think if we drop the MacTavish it will.
"Bonnie Bairn" is scottish for Pretty Baby and she is.

Now there was also Melynda, Tymothee-too, Lucky and Buff-Puff. Most
of these guys were fostercats. We always seem to make kitty friends
    where-ever we go.
      Nancy DC

TROUBLE - She came pre-named and I was told she was named this because
she would get the dogs in trouble. Until we got the other
two kittens, she did not live up to her name. Now, well....

BECKY - Randy named this one since she was going to be his and he has
always like this name (now what do we do if we have kids :-) ).

VELCRO - Actually Randy named him too, but that was only because he
thought of if before I did. When we first brought Becky and
Velcro home, their nails were a little long, and he kept
getting stuck in everything. When Randy pulled him off the
back of a living room chair, it made the noise of velcro being
    	     pulled apart, thus tha name.

Well, the patter of tiny paws entered our household last Friday
and things haven't been the same since!!!

Having looked after a cat for the "in-laws" whilst they moved house
(we had the cat for 9 months) I was accused of spoiling Rema (the
cat), something rotten. I vowed then if we ever got our own kitten
or puppy we would call him Reilly!

So, when this little bundle of fun was threatened with a very short
life span - what could I do - I fell in love with his cheeky little
face and his loving nature and brought him home.

Even after only 6 days he is well and truely settled. Needless
to say he gets lots of attention. One of his greatest escapades
so far was joining me in the bath - thought the shock would put
him off bathing but no - every morning we have a battle with him
trying to get in the bath and me trying to keep him out!!

Any way, back to the naming, we called him REILLY - after 'The Life
of Reilly' - a real cushy number!!

I thought I did this one before, but I guess not. Here goes!

Silver: Actually Sterling Silver. She is a Korat and their coat color
is defined as "Silver blue". hence the name Sterling silver.

PITA: Almost everyone in this file knows this one. It stands for
"Pain in the *SS" and BOY does she live up to it!! Her actual name is
"Lady sings the blues". She's another Korat and the cattery where we
got her from requests that all of the kittens names have something to
do with the theatre. Considering her breed and the defined coat color,
    I kind of liked it.

Tabitha: She's pure black and we got her about 3 weeks before
halloween. The same time that we got my sister's cat called Samantha.
    Both names are from "Bewitched".

Seasea: Actually "Leg-a-sea". She was named before we got her. All
cats from that cattery were named after horses.

Sweetie: Actually "Sweet sixteen". He was given to my neice for her
    sixteenth birthday.

Michaela: She's a Golden Tabby Persian. We figured that she needed a
"distinguished" type of name. Heard it from a friend.

understand that there was quite an evil side to the character,
but otherwise the name suits him well. He's actually called

Holly - she came to me right before Christmas.

    Buffy - that's his color.

Velvet Thai - he's my part Siamese with the color and velvet texture of
    		  his coat.

    D.P. Gremlin - "D.P." stands for "Double-Pawed" (all 4 feet) and when
he walks, he looks like a Gremlin; even has the same
    		   expression sometimes. ;-)

Midnight - not original but I needed a name to register him for at
Vet's after I found him last October. He was the "purrfect"
Halloween cat - black, large head with mystical golden eyes,
curled corner of upper lip (nerve damage) revealing one
fang, and the hunched way he had to walk as he dragged his
crippled right front foot and leg. He likes to "mumble" too
sometimes which is like a low growling. His looks are very
deceiving though as he's a sweetheart after all he's been

Rob, you have good taste in literature - is Random as big a rogue?

Now I've always marked "Corwen" as a good name for a cat :-)

Klaus Came named, short for Klaus Von Bulow Delorean to
		commemorate some infamous characters.

Katrina A German sounding name to match Klaus.

Phantom He's longhaired and very *quiet*, and sneaks around.

Nutmeg A calico with colors well-mixed so she looks like
the spice. Wins out prize for the best name.

Coconut A lot of white, and she acts like a nut. A coco nut.

Georgina	Was George until she was tame enough for us to figure
out she was a she. Named after seeing the Bugs Bunny
cartoons that "hug 'em and kiss 'em and call him George."

Algernon	In a cat names book (we weren't feeling creative), means
		"whiskered one."

Bailey Named after a friend's cat to carry on a name legacy.

Bosco black and white, looks like vanilla ice cream with
		chocolate sauce dripped on him.

Klaus, Katrina, Phantom, Nutmeg, Coconut, Georgina, Algernon, Bailey,
Bosco, diane and i (bill)

Kitty Cat - not really original but ... when he was a kitten, I called
him 'Kitty' while trying to come up with a real name.
Needless to say, I never came up with anything else
(although 'Whiner' seems to fit these days).

Tasha - as in Natasha, for a mysterious looking long-haired-black-
    		with-gray-tufts-behind-her-ears cat.

Skunk - A black and white cat (nicknamed 'Meatloaf' and 'Tubs' for
    		obvious reasons).

Puffin - Another black and white - named after those puffin
    		penguins.

Shadow	He followed me around constantly when we first got him

Blinky	Has one eye that winks frequently

    Ted E. Bear
A very large but cuddly cat. His nickname is Gut-Gut
because he will eat to excess if you let him.

Anonymous	Wandered into our yard one day and adopted us.
When someone asked me what his name was I said he didn't
have one, whereby my son piped up "he's anonymous" and it
    		stuck.

Streeter Named after a friend of my husbands from the Navy

Half 'Stache Because she has half a black Moustache just under her
    		   nose

Binky Because she doesn't bounce off of the walls just
Bink's from place to place in the House

Shadow Because she used to follow people around and slink

3252.67Dogger, Peppare and Trouble CSC32::W_AMESI don't KNOW where Tinkerbell is!Thu Apr 19 1990 08:3628
My two oldest cats/kittens (they're ONLY 9 and a half or ten months
old!!) are black with a grey undercoat and cream with tan stripes. The
friend that took me to get them said that they looked like salt and
pepper shakers, so they started out as Solte and Peppare. Well, Solte
got big and bad and not real independant. He started following me
around everywhere, he would come when he was called, he liked doing
dog-like things, and he liked going into the bathroom immediately after
the toilet was flushed to watch the water swirl away. At that point I
started calling him Soltey-Dawgg (partially to keep the Solte part 'cuz
I liked the spelling and partially because he acts just like a dog.).
Some how that got changed to Dogger. He's either called Dogger or
Doggins depending on my mood and what he's done or doing. Peppare is
about half of Dogger's size, and on her records it says Peppare, but
she gets called either Baby, Bitty or Beebles. Lately it's been
Beebles 'cuz she's kind of goofy and it's a goofy kind of name.

My "little one" is appropriately named Trouble. When I brought him
home and introduced him to the other cats he decided he was going to
try to rule the roost, so to speak. For the first couple of hours he
would find an unsuspecting adversary, sneak up on him or her, and
SWIPE! right in the face. No claws out though. I think he realized
that if he hurt Dogger he would get hurt back (what with Dogger twice
his size and all) and if he hurt Beebles, Dogger would get him. He was
    probably right on the mark.

-Wendy- (who was aptly named for the mothering character in Peter Pan)
