3226.0. "I Love Cats " by TOPDOC::TRACHMAN (Exotic Shorthairs=NO Grooming) Wed Jan 10 1990 12:31

    Any one see the latest issue of 'I Love Cats' mag? There was a nice
    story about a shelter housing 'MANY' cats. Also included was a
    picture of a woman coming in the door, as we would do when we
    get home from work, being greeted by about 20 or 30 cats. I
    sort of did a double take when I glanced quickly at the picture,
    cause the background was pine walls, the color of the cats looked
    about like so many of mine (one of each) - I thought someone had
    sent in a picture of my kids! Nope, guess a colorful mixed bunch
    can be misleading! Nice story, though. Anyone get this publication?
    How are you liking it? This issue is their one year anniversary issue.

    Elaine,

    I got a subscription to I Love Cats, when it first came out....I wasn't
    really happy with the content, especially the breed articles. I was
    extremely disappointed in the breed article done on Exotics. The
    publication is on poor quality paper, the articles are flimsey at best,
    and it looks like it was published in someone's basement. My
    subscription has expired, and I won't be renewing it, even with the
    "renewal deals" they are offering.

    I think it's too expensive for the content.

    Just My Opinion...I'ld be interested to hear how others feel.

    	Cin,

    	I feel the same way - it's fluff. I don't feel I
    	got anything out of my subscription, which also
    	will not be renewed. It's not very informative
    	to see four pages of owners' pictures and blurbs
    	about thier cats - I'd rather see pics of fellow
    	Feliner's cats....

    I agree - my subscription runs out with the next issue. I won't
    be reupping it either. I guess it's tough to get started,
    but the content isn't wonderful. The article in this issue
    on the shelter was 'good' though.

3226.5I didn't care for it either . .SMURF::S_FRASERC'mon everybody! Smurf's up!Wed Jan 10 1990 17:179

    I also agree that the magazine isn't worth what they're charging for
    it. This conference is more fun, more informative, and it's free, too!
    :^} The issues I received contained dark, blurry pictures that cat
    owners had sent in, cat astrology stuff, cat book reviews, and some
    rather superficial articles.

3226.6Won't renew ILC, but check out Pet FocusWR2FOR::CORDESBRO_JOset home/cat_max=infinityWed Jan 10 1990 18:1326
    I agree with the general consensus that this magazine is full of
    fluff. I wasn't too impressed with the breed article that they
    did on my breed, and much of the information that they provide on
    the cat fancy is incorrect. I won't be renewing.

    Now, for a magazine that is definitely not fluff, try Pet Focus.
    It is a magazine edited by a veterinarian, and the articles are
    written by vets. The premier issue was sent to me as a freebee.
    I mailed a copy of it to Linda Sobek for any of you that might want
    to take a look at it. The premier issue offered an article about
    Animal Allergies, which I am currently battling with Joui. The
    article was very informative, not at all geared to the general pet
    owning population, but not too medical to understand. It had very
    graphic pictures in it, they appeared to be the type found in vet
    text books. They also had an article about Glaucoma, Heartworm,
    Parvovirus, and how to find a veterinary specialist if you need
    one, FIV, and how to cope with the loss of a pet.

    The address for subscriptions is Pet Focus, P.O. Box 608, Mesa,
    AZ 85211-0608. The cost is $26.00 for one year, and I think it
    is published bi-monthly. Upcoming issues will include articles
    on Dietary additives and supplements, Fleas and flea control, Felv
    infection, Preventive dental care, Hip dysplaysia, Cardiomyopathy,
    FIP, Kennel cough, and much more that I don't have time to list.

    Jo,

    I'ld be really interested in seeing the article on Glaucoma, since
    Stripees has it. His Opthomologist (Dr. Bachrach) says it's quite rare
    in cats, and especially rare in young cats...Stripees was diagnosed
    with it at just 8 months.

    Do you know if this was in the copy you forwarded to Linda, or can you
    send me a copy???

    cin

3226.8Cin, I've got my copy waiting for you!!!GLINKA::GREENECatmax = Catmax + 1Wed Jan 10 1990 19:215
    Yeah, but the "pets" category is large...too expensive to
    pay for articles on beetles, fish, and whatever else they
    may have in addition to cats (and dogs)!

    	;-)
3226.9How did they get our addresses Penny?WR2FOR::CORDESBRO_JOset home/cat_max=infinityWed Jan 10 1990 19:5722
    Cin,

    I sent Linda a copy of the whole magazine, which was quite a chore
    to copy. The article about Glaucoma was written by Dan W. Lorimer,
    DVM of Eye Clinic for Animals, Tucson, AZ.

    I just put Linda's copy in the mail the other day, Monday I think,
    so if Penny has a copy handy, you might try it.

    It is true that the magazine isn't about cats only, but I have a
    dog too. Most of the upcoming articles that they mentioned have
    either to do with dogs or cats. I think that they realize that
    there is more of a market in dogs and cats than in fish, beetles,
    and whatever. It is expensive, but I think that the type of
    information that they are providing is worth the extra $10 over
    the cost of a Cat Fancy or Cats magazine. BTW - I have also stopped
    subscribing to them. So now I get the Almanac, Cat World
    International, and Pet Focus instead of Cats, Cat Fancy, I Love
    Cats, the Almanac, and Cat World International. So, I am actually
    saving money.  :^)

    	Another `informative' pet magazine is Pet Health New, you
    	used to only see it at the vets, but baout 2 yrs ago they
    	started to offer subscriptions. It always has good articles,
    	and points out new findings in veterinary science every month.

    	I subscribed at a cat show, it's 17.97 for 12 issues, the
    	address is Pet Health News; Subscription Dept; P.O.Box 486;
    	Mt Morris, IL 61054-8038.
