3219.0. "*CYSTITUS AND TREATS*" by AIMHI::OFFEN () Tue Jan 09 1990 12:48

Lightning has Cystitus. She has had it for a while. She is being
treated for it. That's not my problem.

My problem is trying to find something I can use for a treat. Every
time I try to give her something other than the Triumph cat food, she
starts up with the Cystitus symptoms.

She doesn't like the PetTabs from the vet. I feel bad if I give
Thunder and DejaVu a treat while Lightning is in the area.

    Does anyone have any suggestions??

    Sandi, Lightning's mom

Maybe just don't use treats. I guess I'm lazy, but my kids don't
get them. I just don't think to pick them up at the store cause
I don't buy cat food in the market. They don't seem to miss them
    at all.

I would NEVER call you a MEAN MOM.... Not after you have given a home
    to 18 kitties.

I guess I feel guilty because Storm (dog) gets a treat and the kittys
look at me saying "Where's mine, mom???"

I am like E.T., I don't give treats either, unless you count an
occassional lick of Nutrical, or a half a Pettab as a treat. The
cats seem to think that they are. With the Pettabs, I break them
into quarters before giving them, the cats won't touch them if the
are whole. The nutrical would probably be a good treat for Lightening.
It is a vitamin mineral supplement, in jel form like Petromalt.
    My cats love the stuff.

Since I have FUS cats, and like to give them an occasional treat, I'll
just give take a handful of C/D and dole it out one pellet at a time.

The vet suggested that a very occasional treat of fresh chicken liver
could also serve as a treat.

I sometimes sprinkle cat nip on the floor and let them go crazy!
It's a trip to watch 18 fuzzies turn into crazies all at the same
time! Lil get a bit a nutrical every other day or so - she really
loves that stuff! Has a fit when I take the tube away - she also
likes her vitamins - licks the liquid from the end of the dropper
and hates it when it's empty!

Dessicated liver tablets make great cat treats! They are available
at health food stores and some grocery stores. I would think that
being plain liver with no preservatives or fat they should be safe
for your kitty with special needs. I haven't met a kitty yet that
didn't love them. Mine will sit up for them like my beagle.

How about freeze-dried liver as a treat? My Butterscotch loves it!
You can find it at most pet supply stores. This is both a cat and
dog treat, so maybe you can feed all your critters the same treat.
BTW, It's best to break the liver chunks into little pieces.

I'm a newcomer to owning kitties. I have a one and a half year old
neutered male. I didn't know you weren't surposed to give them treats.
I have been giving him the kitty treats you buy at the grocery store.
(the brand names escape me at this time) Help!! You mean I'm not
surposed to give these to kitty. I feed him Iams cat food. I know
thats ok. Is it ok to give him little pieces of table straps like,
chicken, fish, a bit of hot dog.

I had two kitties with urinary problems in the past. Although
they had to eat the special food, I did give them an occasional treat
and never had a problem. I guess it would just depend on if the
reaction occurred from something as small as a treat. I'm sure in some
cats, they would be sensitive even to that small amount, others
    wouldn't be.

Mine seem to like small pieces of Cheder Cheese but I don't like to
give them much. Too much colestrall (sp?).

Oh by the way, one time I had a rather dry piece of beef stick. I
gave a small piece to two of my cats and they looked at me as if they
didn't understand what they were suppose to do with it.

I guess that says something about beef stick.

Holly is prone to FUS. I have to be careful with treats also, as
Pounce, for example, seems to guarantee an FUS attack. For their
    regular meals, all
three cats get canned CD. For treats the following seem to be okay,
although your cat may be more sensitive:

    They get 5 to 10 pieces of Science Diet dry cat food apiece a day;
they seem to think this is a great treat.

Occasionally (once every week or two) I split a can of tuna or
_boneless_ salmon among them. Or turkey (not the smoked kind)
that I buy at the deli.

They also have catnip orgies occasionally. If yours don't seem to
like the catnip, try a different brand; some seem to not have any
scent. I like to buy the kinds that come in plastic reclosable
jars or bags; sure beats cardboard boxes that leak catnip into the
    drawer.

They also snack (a little) from the table (ssshhhh) if something
    interests them.

What about the 'treats' called 'Cat Love'? I believe they're actually
vitamins (the container recommends 3-6 a day, ha ha), and are kinda
pricey ($3+/100), but three out of our four love them, and they're the
*only* treat that Miss Smudge enjoys.

    Re: .10

Dogs & Cats are Carnivores by nature & therefore process cholesterol
differently than humans. So, giving cheese & meat & other foods high
in cholesterol should be okay for them... or does your kitty have a
special reason why you couldn't give him this kind of food?

    Just wondering.
