3208.0. "SICK CAT - NEED HELP" by SSGV01::JOHNSON () Thu Jan 04 1990 17:19

I have a problem I'm hoping I can get some advice on.

My cat (9 months old) has taken ill. It all started Saturday night when we
noticed he only touched about half his dinner and seems lethargic. Later that
night after hearing him going crazy in the litter box we noticed there was
a long strand of tinsel in his stool. Seeing that it came out alright I hoped
it was the end of it.

He didn't touch food on Sunday and when the same ocurred Monday AM and he
vomitted, I brought him into emergency. They took his temp (normal) and
examined that morning's stool sample and found nothing. They shot him
up with some fluids to avoid dehydration.

I brought him to Nashoba Valley after no improvement on Tuesday. They took
normal X-rays and still didn't see anything.

He still isn't eating his normal food and is terribly listless. It's funny,
though, because he still has an appetite for two types of cat treats and
comes running to the kitchen each time he hears his bowl being washed out.
But each time we put the food down (have tried 3 brands and numerous
varieties now) he just scratches and scratches all around. He also hasn't
    been vomitting any more.

The vet suggested the next step being to go into the gut and do some
exploratory surgery. Does this sound reasonable? Is there anything else
we should try? Has anyone come across anything like this before?

Thanks.

I'm not an authority on this subject, but it sounds like now that
he's got everything up and out and the doctors don't find anything
wrong then he will probably start eating in a couple of days. After
you (a person) has finished a bout with the flu, you don't want to eat
    right away either.

I hope kitty is feeling better real soon.

You might want to try some plain strained lamb babyfood. They usually
can't resist, and it's good for the digestive system.

Unless there is still a piece of tinsel that may be causing a blockage
or a bowel irritation. That stuff ought to be banned - it sure
causes problems with cats. My daughter had a similar problem
and she 'knows better' than to use it. She said she hung it
high, but a piece fell off and ....

3208.4Second opinion?MEMIT::MISSELHORNFri Jan 05 1990 15:3621
My future stepdaughter works at a vets and they recently have had
to do exploratory surgery which resulted in removing blockages. One
kitty had eaten an entire shoelace.

In fact, I've been hearing so many stories lately about kitties
swallowing things and developing blockages that I'm getting paranoid!

I even had Laurel ask at the vets if they should do an X-ray on
Brittany's stomach since she loves to eat the cotton end off of
Q-tips, her favorite toy. (I try to prevent her from doing it but
the little dickens tips over all the wastebaskets in the house while
we're gone to find them.) They said not to do anything unless a
problem occurs so I'm just watching her closely.

If you are uncomfortable waiting, you might want to call either another
vet for advice or Tuft's to see what they say. I've gone the second
opinion route myself on occasion--it never hurts.

Good luck and keep us posted!

Well, one day later and things are looking better. When I got home
last night he had eaten a bit of the food I left in the AM. Then ate
    baby food that night.

This AM he finished all baby food and some dry, so it looks like he's
eating again. So, now I'll just keep the fingers crossed and with
cautious optimism keep a close eye one him.

Hope all the bad is out of him and was glad to spare him the trauma of
exploratory surgery. Hell, he freaks upon getting a shot.

    Thanks for the help.

wonder if you had any pointsettia or mistletoe or other toxic x-mas
item in the house. has it had it's shots and did the vet take a
blood test. also is it urinating normally or small amount? you might
try the Cat Dr in Bedford ma. 617-275-5223 open sat. am as well
    as weekdays.
