3201.0. "Using keywords" by VAXWRK::LEVINE () Wed Jan 03 1990 19:49

I'd like to make the readership of FELINE aware of a very useful
feature of NOTES - namely keywords. At a very basic level, keywords
make it easy to find things quickly in the notesfile - more quickly
than using the SEARCH command or the DIRECTORY command. Deb and I
try very hard to keep keywords up to date and current and there are
a wealth of them in this file. To see all the keywords in the file,
issue the following command:

SHOW KEYWORDS

This will give you a very long list of all the keywords in the file.
You can then find notes associated with a particular keyword. For
example, if you wanted to see all the notes associated with the LITTER
keyword, you could issue the command:

SHOW KEY/FU LITTER

This will return a list of notes that have the keyword LITTER associated
with them. You can then access the individual notes to see what's been
written on the subject.

You can also use the wildcard character, *, if you don't know how to
spell something or if you want to see multiple listings. For example,

SHOW KEY/FU LITTER*

will return all entries for both LITTER and LITTERBOX_PROBLEMS.

This gives you a basic idea of what can be done with keywords. The
documentation on NOTES or the HELP KEYWORD command in NOTES can also
provide you with more information.

There's a wealth of information in this notesfile. It's been around for
4-1/2 years and has 3200 notes in it. Just about every common problem
relating to cats has been discussed in it. Knowing how to find it will
make it much more useful to you and keywords are a real good way to easily
access the information.

    Pam,

Thanks for the instructions. I have been noting in here for about
three years and I am so glad to find another way to access information.
I usually use the directory command, which takes forever, and doesn't
always show you all the notes on a topic.

I am going to print out these instructions so that I can refer back
    to them when needed.

3201.1List of most common topicsVAXWRK::LEVINEWed Jan 03 1990 20:1334
There are some topics that come up over and over again in this
conference. In order to aid those looking for information on
these topics, I'm going to list here some of the most commonly
used keywords. Please search the full keyword list before starting
a new note on a topic.

ALLERGY - Used for discussions of people allergic to cats
		  and ways of coping.
BOOKS - Books about cats.
BREEDERS	- Notes discussing breeders of particular breeds.
There are also keywords for every breed ever
mentioned so you cann look under the breed also.
BREEDING_ISSUES	- Things that breeders know and deal with such as
genetics, showing, handling buyers, health tips, etc.
DOGS - Issues relating to cats and dogs coexisting.
FELV - Feline Leukemia.
FUS - Feline Urologic Syndrome (see also CYSTITIS).
LITTERBOX_PROBLEMS - The most common problem discussed here!
MOURNING	- A new keyword, but an important topic - resources
		  for mourning lost pets.
NEW_CAT - Behavior problems when a new cat is introduced.
NEW_OWNER	- Information for people new to living with cats.
SHELTER - Listings and discussions of animal shelters.
SPRAYING	- Problems with cats spraying.
TRAVELING	- Issues when traveling with cats.
VETS - The second most common topic of discussion!

As I said, there are many other keywords as well - these are just
the most common ones. Should you feel the need for another keyword
to be added to the file, please either reply to this note or contact
one of the moderators.

Yes, THANK YOU. I wrote down from a previous note the SHO KEYWORD/FULL
command a while ago, but don't always remember to use it, or can't find
what I'm looking for. I too will print these instructions and put them
on my wall for future reference.

Show key/fu tends to produce a long list of notes. Is there a note
facility that will let you step thru these notes one at a time? It
is unmanagable to write a zillion numbers down on a scrap of paper.

3201.8Unfortunately, no known wayVAXWRK::LEVINEFri Jan 05 1990 14:3411
RE: Note 3201.7 by CIRCUS::KOLLING "Karen/Sweetie/Holly/Little Bit Ca."

Sorry Karen, but I'm not aware of any notes facility to make this easier.
I do the same thing when tracing something down - write all the note
numbers down on a piece of paper and cross them off as I look into them.
I suspect a very intelligent and enterprising person might be able to
work something up with the TPU interface, but that's way beyond my skills
these days. Any takers?

3201.9try HELP files...SKETCH::PAULHUSChris @ MLO6B-2/T13 dtn 223-6871Fri Jan 05 1990 14:387
While you are reading notes, type HELP and hit return. You'll see a
whole screen of topics that may make your noting more pleasant. The
Examples sub-topics are a great help towards understanding the sometimes
cryptic descriptions. Everyone should be encouraged to just browse
thru HELP files on whatever application you use, NOTES, DECalc, Mail,
etc. You can do this in private and you will come away from these
sessions feeling more confident and competent - good feelings. - Chris

Try this comfile that I use:

    ------cut here------------------
    $notes
    open feline/noauto
    sho key/full
    exit
    $exit
    ----------end of comfile--------------

Submit this comfile to batch. Call the comfile keyword.com or
whatever, when the batch job is done, edit keyword.log in your
login directory, you will have to delete some trash, but you
will have the keywords in a file you can use/print/refer to,
this is what I do. Very simple and quick.

After you do the show key/fu, can't you just do a
print/queue=(whatever) and print that screen? I haven't ever done
that, but seems like it could work. Then you wouldn't have to jot
    them down on paper.

Yes, Jo, you can! I bring up the key words on the screen, then
press the Print Screen key and send the information to my printer.

Easy stuff! Also, as mentioned earlier, the help commands are very
informative and even provide examples, should you not understand
    a particular command string.

RE:  Note 3201.10 by HPSTEK::BELANGER "CAT-astrophic! (Meow?!)"

Fred,

Thanks for the information on how to get the keywords into a file.
I think Karen was looking for a way to step through a list that NOTES
would generate and would keep track of where in the list she is. Is
that correct, Karen?

Pam
3201.14WR2FOR::CORDESBRO_JOset home/cat_max=infinityFri Jan 05 1990 16:009
    Roberta,

I have to queue the screen to a printer since the print screen command
sends it to my LQP02 which I run preprinted forms through. But
    print screen works for others.

I would do anything to keep from having to write things down myself.

How does a keyword get associated with a note? Is that something
we can do or something the moderators do?

3201.18More on keywordsVAXWRK::LEVINETue Jan 09 1990 15:2911
For some reason that Deb and I have never understood, it seems as tho
I am the only one who can easily add keywords to the conference. Once
a keyword exists, anyone can add it to a note. I would caution those
wishing to do that that they are careful to see if the note already has
keywords associated with it (SHOW NOTE command) and that they make
sure to add the proper keyword to the proper note (I've made this mistake
often).

Actually, the reason that Pam does most of the keywording is because
she is not the creative speller that I am. This conference is set up
so that keyword creation is restricted to the moderators, but as Pam
said, once a keyword exists anyone can add it to a note.

Do a help on delete keyword.

3201.22Using KEYS and MARKERSLYMPH::SWANTCan't get away from basicsFri Jan 12 1990 15:2534
The following refer to the base note or reply that you are
    currently reading:

	show note/key
	add key earmites
	del key earmites

It is best to add keywords to the base note rather than the
replies unless the topic is going down a rat hole (ohhhh, how the
    kitties love these).

When you are reading a base note or a reply that you want to
refer to later, choose a meaningful name like "Dusty" (for my new
    kitty):

	add mark dusty
	show mark
	show mark dusty
	del mark dusty

You can press the <Select> key when the pointer is pointing to
the mark of your choice and that note will come up.

If you mark a note with "cat-shows" and are reading a later reply
you can update the reference with

	add mark cat-shows

and the marker will move to the current reply.

    Try it, you'll like it.
