3196.0. "Good-bye Lucky" by CGVAX2::LANDRY () Wed Jan 03 1990 11:36

My sister-in-law's cat, Lucky, passed away this weekend. I feel I must
    tell this tale of "Lucky".

Jeanne and Mike use to ask my husband and I "why do you have cats?"
They never really liked them much. Then, Jeanne's daughter brought
home a stry kitten that would have died out in the cold. They named
her Rascal because she loved to play. That was all it took to become
cat lovers. Next, they found a kitten in the paper in need of a home,
    so in came Alley.

All this time, a stray had decided to make a home under their deck.
The spring and summer went by, and then winter set in. Well, Jeanne
had enough of seeing this cat try to stay warm and dry (she was feeding
it, tho) and decided to give it a bath and take it to the vet for a
checkup. All the while she was bathing this stray, he was purring up a
storm. She had to wash him 3 times to get all the dirt out. The vet
was surprised, no fleas or earmites and this cat had been nuetered
(sp?). They named him Lucky, for he was a lucky cat to be taken in by
    these feline lovers.

Lucky was pampered, loved and my favorite of the three. This beautiful
baby *loved* to be petted and paid attention to. But, it was an old
cat and being out in the cold took its tole. Christmas weekend I went
to visit Jeanne and she told me she had to take Lucky to the vet
because he couldn't make it to the cat box on time (very unusual for
any feline). The vet couldn't find anything wrong, just old age, but I
*knew* that this was it. Lucky would have to rest when walking to his
dish to eat - he was nearing the end. The vet said he wasn't in pain,
and Jeanne refused to put Lucky to sleep.

Well, Thursday night (12/28) Jeanne sat up with Lucky most of the night
and he died early Friday morning. This is her first feline to pass
away, and I know how she was feeling. They will bury him in their
backyard when the ground thaws - this is how they want it.

Lucky, I know you are in kitty heaven now and may you rest in peace.

My condolences to Jeanne, Mike and you. Lucky was certainly a
lucky kitty to have such a warm caring family. It's beautiful that he
was able to go at home, in peace, without pain.

Your sister made Lucky's last times to remember happy ones. He went
    knowing that he was loved.

It seems that there have been so many losses since the holidays
and last night I was disussing the passing of these little loved
ones with my husband and we both started to remeniss about our Ting
who has been gone 6 years. The memories became much more vivid
and before we knew it we were laughing and crying with all this
    remembering.

When I went to get into bed Gino my 13 lb Siames hopped up on the
bed and started talking to me - for a moment he looked just like
Ting - and my eyes filled with tears - at which point he came up
to me and licked my tears - he had never done that before but this
was something that Ting used to do to comfort me. Maybe he came
back for just a moment to let me know that he was ok and looking
on with all of our babies who have left us behind - but really not
left us at all. Gino then snuggled in the crook of my arm and went
    to sleep.

Your sister will never be without Lucky's love - it will always
be with her along with his spirt.

At least Jeanne was able to spend Lucky's last hours with him, so he
knew how much he was loved. I wish I had been with my Cissy when her
    time came.

I'll be adding Lucky's name to the Silver Lining Memorial List
for Q3 FY90. We already have a Lucky on the Q2 list and I felt
that they should each be commemorated separately.

We once had a Lucky too. Hopefully he's still alive and happy
    with his family.

My condolences to Jeanne and Mike.

Sorry to hear of your sister-in-laws' loss. I too lost a 'Lucky'.
But now I am just about ready to 'go cat hunting', my house is a
vast space so empty when there is no cat.

I couldn't imagine what my house would be like without a furface
running around. Jeanne and Mike are already looking for another kitty
that they can "save". Mike says he doesn't want to get another because
it hurts too much when they go, but he is slowly changing his mind.

Good luck in finding a new furface!

I didn't even make it two full days without a resident feline.
Kathryn died between 6 and 6:30 on a Friday and Bumpy came to
    live with us Sunday afternoon.
I never want to be without furry companionship.
