3133.0. "Verne discovers new diet plan.." by ASABET::C_AQUILIA () Tue Dec 12 1989 12:05

verne has lost weight! i just know it (even though i have yet to
weight him and told myself i wouldn't inform anyone of this special
diet treatment until i was sure) but i am sure! you can even see
it in his stomach... no more saggs.

the secret you ask? a mere wire champagne top. i'm not sure how to
explain what it looks like. it came from one of those 'big' bottles
that are black. you undo the plastic stuff and take off a wire thing
before the cork. it looks something like this:

        ------
        | |
        ______
       / \
      / \
     ___________

and that's wire. its all together and there is no rough edges for him
    to hurt himself.

anyways... for two weeks now he has done nothing but bring the darn
thing all over the house with him; preferrably to the non-carpeted
floors because it acts like a hockey puck and sends him flying into
counters and everywhere trying to chase it. he even plays by himself,
and when he gets bored about every half hour he will bring it into the
room that we are in and place it in our laps. directly in the lap mind
you so you know that he means business.

i have never seen any toy give him so much pleasure. and no less
doesn't it happen to be the free ones that capture their heart and
    soul.

so, i guess the moral of the story is.... need a cat to lose weight --
get yourself a bottle of champagne and give them two weeks...

i'm weighing him tonight, a month ago he was 14 pounds!

cj, verne and... shirl (who still can't figure out why he loves the thing
    so much)

    :)

3133.1I'm off to the toy store, hic-cup!ASABET::CUNNIFFTue Dec 12 1989 13:5911
    Yay CJ -

This is proof that you can't always depend on a toy's cost as a measure
of how much the cat will like it (24.95 for a cat-fishing rod??),
it's always trash/junk that cats like best.

I'm really excited now - with seven cats under the roof, that's lots of
bubbly I'll have to drink. (gee, I wonder if "Mumms" has wire tops the
    cats will like?)

CJ, that's what I need for T.K.! The fat blob was up to 16 1/2
pounds at his recent annual exam -- up 6 1/2 pounds from last year!!
He's currently on IAMS light and not at all happy about it. I've
yet to see this cat play with anything but food!!

Murdock has devised a new method of playtime for the cats. You
know those "shaker" things you buy at cat shows? It's a long stick
with a bunch of fringe like things on the end? Well, Murdock takes
the end of the stick in his mouth, then runs around in circles with
it on the floor while the other cats chase the fringe. It's
hysterical!! That silly cat thinks of more ways to keep us laughing!
I won't even go into how he watches "The Young and the Restless"
    with us every night....

Hmm... I love champagne! Now we'll need to devour 7 bottles!!
This could be fun!! Maybe we need a champagne party!

Hey Jack! You buying the champagne????

Hmm. I can see it now, champagne on one hand, "chocolate orgasms" in the
other, and cats underfoot (and anywhere else they fit!) Sounds like a
    good reason for another party!

3133.8My vote? Free toys are better!!!ISLNDS::BROUGHFri Dec 15 1989 18:3720
I have to agree with the free toys. I have gone to department
stores and gone to the pet department and picked out a few catnip
toys and bring them home to the little monsters. The last toy I
bought for them was a cylindrical tube with a bell inside and the
whole thing is covered with carpet (at $5.00 I thought what the
heck). The little guys don't really care for it BUT when I opened
a quart bottle of milk and the blue plastic ring fell on the floor,
they hd a ball. Pixie (the male) has to always steal it from Dixie
(the female) even though he has his own. It is a riot watching
him pick the thing up and run all over the house with it, then he
plops down on the floor with it and bats in around his body. One
more thing that Pixie likes is ping-pong balls, but unfortunately,
once they roll downstairs, he gives up on them. I rolled one around
in the kitchen and he takes off through the living room, dining
room, through the kitchen down to the cellar, then it's back upstairs
to plop down in front of me as if to say, okay lunkhead I got it
downstairs, it's up to you to get it back up here - it's too big
    to get in my mouth.

Cats, you can live with them, or you can live with them.

Ha, my Lara had a neat trick with respect to free toys.
When I was showing her, I would walk around the show
hall with her once during the day just for a change
of scenery for her. I'd walk her over to the Hadleigh
House vending area so she could say hi to Martha. While
Martha was scratching Lara's head, Lara would be busy
trying to grab a mousie (the ones with the rabbit fur).
OF course Martha would say, "Oh, let her take one!" and
of course Lara would snag the mousie of her choice !!
    Little devil !!

My Jasper also like the ring off a milk bottle.!! But she likes
to play fetch with it. Throw it from the living room into the dining
room, she races to then rolls around for a few minutes, brings it
to you on the couch and waits to have you throw it again.

She also does this with rubber bands (which she doesn't eat), but
has taken to digging in the cushions looking for her toys which
she "knows" that she left there!! 8-) She fetches better than the
dog does! (Nikki doesn't like to give you back the toy that you
    just threw for her!)

The one great success in store bought toys was a little stuffed
fish which starts out on a stretchy string. This lasts about 1-2
days and then gets chewed off. But Duchess likes to "kill" her
fish (usually at least once a day!) and leave it for us in various
places around the house, the most creative (and annoying!) being
the large water bowl. I look at her and say, "Duchess, I know that
real fishys live in water, but you have to understand that this
is not a real fishy" as I wring it out and put it on the counter
to dry. A couple of days later, there it is--in the water bowl!!
How do we get through to them???

Oh, well--Mommy just went out and got new Christmas toys and a big
present, a window shelf that all five of them can fight over!!!

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to all

3133.11Buddy loves Dental Floss....SELL3::MAZOLAThu Dec 28 1989 15:3320
Oh, that's SO FUNNY!! For new year's this year, my fiance and I
(and Buddy) are have a quiet celebration at home. I'll DEFINATELY
    try it!!

Buddy is funny.... he goes after the dental floss when I do my teeth!
Yup, sure enough, everytime I head for the bathroom (at ANYTIME for
ANY REASON) he follows me in hopes to find the "all mighty" dental
floss"!! Before I go to bed, when I wash my face and stuff, he'll
plant himself on the corner of the sink!!! In the morning, or at
night... he USE to just race in and jump up on the toilet seat rim,
get his balance and then jump up on the sink, but once he slipped and
fell into the toilet! HAHA AHAAHA!! I laughed SO HARD!! It was the
    funniest thing!

Now he runs to the toilet, looks at ME and asks ME to put the lid down,
so he can jump up safely....haahaha he's funny.

    Cheers!
