3082.0. "Is Ben THAT Sensitive/Intuitive?" by MICLUS::MTAG () Mon Nov 27 1989 12:33

A few weeks ago, I entered a note about Benjamin urinating in places
other than his litter box. I had him on valium for a week and he is
now fine. I have some questions, though, about how sensitive cats
really are. Ben has always been MY cat - he goes where I go, sleeps
where I sleep, etc. Since he came off the valium, he's been over
possessive of me and won't leave me alone.

I am currently 3 1/2 months pregnant with our first child. My mother
seems to think Ben sensed the baby, was jealous, and therefore pee'd
where he shouldn't have. The valium seemed to even out this behavior
problem (thank God) but now he's all over me. I've had Ben for 7 years
and am his 3rd owner. When I got him and since then, he likes to
nurse/suck on anything that's attached to me. This has gotten worse
lately and he loves to use my stomach as a pillow. Do you think my mom
is right and Ben senses the baby? Or do you think he's just trying to
comfort me since he constantly sees me in the bathroom with "all day"
(vs "morning") sickness? I love my cat, but he's really gotten to be a
pain in the neck. Even my husband has noticed the behavior change
(which leads me to believe it's not all in my mind).

    Thanks,
    Mary

3082.1sounds wonderful to me..MAMIE::IVESMon Nov 27 1989 15:2316
We have had the same problems with Mocha lately. I keep telling
him his behavior is unacceptable but he isn't listening. I asked
the vet to please give me something to change his awful behavior
and he won't. He says Mocha has a behavioral problem. (Bright answer
to give when I am ready to kill him (the cat not the vet.) We are
    still working on the problem.

Valium sounds great maybe he would be layed back enough that he
would stop peeing in the house and beating up on Ming, the fact
that it would turn him into a love bug would be more than I would
dream of. Mocha a mush face, NEVER happen. Right Roberta?

My suggestion would be take advantage of Benjamin now in case it
    doesn't last.

I think Ben is probably trying to comfort you because he thinks
you are sick (somewhere in this file is a Dr. Cat note recounting
similar experiences), and probably also he realizes that something
is changing and cats always feel insecure about changes. Enjoy the
    cuddling while it lasts.

I seem to remember reading something somewhere (I'm a great help,
aren't I? :-)) about the amazing changes in hormone levels that
women get in pregancy having an effect on cats. With their
super-sensitive noses you smell different to them (in the nicest
possible way!) and they react very positively; especially boy cats,
    I think.

Also, if you are around home more at the moment (being ill), Ben
probably appreciates your company and is reacting accordingly.

Seems a pretty radical solution to making an unfriendly cat friendly
:-). How about it, Mocha and Ming's mother? :-)

Shayne (New Zealand) - thank goodness my boys are lovers anyway!

That wouldn't be radical, it would be ridiculous!!!!!!!!!

There must be another way, there must be another way, there must
    be another way..........

We'll find that ugly button that some one pushes on Mocha while
he's sleeping to make him like that. (We all know cats are not born
    mean.)????
