3077.0. "Neura - an Alternative to Hill's Prescription Diets?" by VAXWRK::SKALTSIS (Deb) Wed Nov 22 1989 17:46

    I at Erickson's Grain Store the other day and I picked up a flier on
    Neura Speciality Diets for dogs and cats. They are advertised as
    "the alternative to Hill's Prescription Diets", "Natural" and
    "Veterinarian Approved". They are made by the Neura Pet Food Company in
    Lowell, MA, a division of Old Mother Hubbard. All are canned foods.

    For Cats they offer a "Light Reducing Diet" as an alternative to R/D,
    A Beef and Chicken and a Beef and Liver Diet as an alternative to C/D,
    and a "Growth and Maintenance Diet" of Chicken and Rice and Chicken,
    Lamb and Rice.

    I'll type in the enter the break down for these foods in the next few
    responses.

    Neura Special Cat Reducing Diet is formulated for the cat who needs
    a limited calorie intake for the treatment of obesity. The fat and
    digestible carbohydrates are replaced by indigestible fiber which
    maintains the bulk in the diet. It should be fed to cats predisposed to
    obesity as well as obese adult cats.

    Neura is a scientifically formulated, high-caloric, reduced ash diet
    with optimally balanced mineral levels. Neura's metabolism produces an
    acid urine. Feline Urological Syndrome (F.U.S) is caused when ash
    (minerals) form calculi or stones in the lower urinary tract of the
    cat. Neura optimally balances magnesium and phosphorous levels and
    maintains an acid urine, which nutritionally help manage F.U.S.

    Very interesting, Deb. Thanks - do you by chance have any
    more info? prices, sizes, etc. ??
    I'll have to tell my daughter about this - she lives in Lowell
    and one of her cats has FUS - they were asking what to feed -
    maybe this will work for their cat - wonder what the cost is
    compared to the Hill, etc.

    I'd be interested to know the price breakdown. If enough people
    were interested I could do a bulk order and possibly save some $$$
    for everyone.

3077.6I'll check later this weekVAXWRK::SKALTSISDebMon Nov 27 1989 19:576
    I have to stop in to get bird food later this week so I'll ask about
    prices. I'd have to beleive that to compete against Hill's in this
    market the proces would have to be significan't lower.

    Was anyone else seen or used this stuff?

3077.7$.99 per canVAXWRK::SKALTSISDebTue Nov 28 1989 17:1010
    Well, I just got back from Ericson's Grain (50 lbs of wild bird seed
    with sunflower seeds was only $11.50 with tax). Both the R/D and C/D
    substitute will be about $.99 per can. They didn't have any in but said
    that they would late this week.

    The man at the store said that Neura claims that they will have a dry
    product availabe in about a year.
