3072.0. "Under The Knife" by WMOIS::MBROWN () Tue Nov 21 1989 11:24

Well today's the day. We brought her to the Vet this morning. I've
said all my prayers, now all I can do is wait to hear from the Vet.
Thank you all for your responses. I'm glad I got some feedback. Wish
us luck!!! Keep your paws & fingers crossed.

I'll keep you informed. If all goes well, you won't hear from me until
Monday, because we won't have her back until tomorrow night.

Hope you all have a happy Thanksgiving.

3072.3It's Over!! So far so good!!WMOIS::MBROWNTue Nov 21 1989 14:469
It's 11:48 am Tuesday morning, I just called the Vet to see if she'd
been operated on yet and she was just coming out of surgery at the time
of my call. So far so good. The opration went smoothly they said, so
I'll know more as the day goes on. Probably give them a call back
    around 2:30 - 3:00pm.

Thankx for the prayers!! They're working!

3072.5I can Finally rest!WMOIS::MBROWNTue Nov 21 1989 17:3124
It's 2:30pm I called again, she's doing better. She's come out of the
anesthesia and her eyes are open. She seems to be breathing normal,
but she hasn't tried to sit up yet. I think she must be very weak,
because we weren't allowed to feed her anything or give her any water
last night and she won't have anything to eat or drink until tomorrow
when we pick her up. After all she's been through, I'd say she's due
for a big bowl of (her favorites) fresh cooked "Chicken Livers"
wouldn't you?? She's been such a "trooper"!!! I just love her so much.
I wish she could live forever. One more obsticle taken care of. Hope
there's not many more. She's just about used up 8 of her 9 lives!!

Now I can rest easy, all day long I've been sitting on pins and needles
    hoping and praying for her.

Thanx again for your support. I'm glad I can be w/her while she
    recovers over Thanksgiving.

    Have a good one.

When my guys have their teeth cleaned, which is much easier
on them than surgery, of course, it takes a number of hours
after the operation for the anesthesia effects to wear off.
They sleep, and wobble, and so on until well into the evening.
You have to be careful about keeping them from trying to jump and so
on while they are wobbly. Did the vet say anything about having
to keep her in a cage or anything until she had healed from
    the operation?

    Melissa,

I am SO GLAD to hear that Felix is coming thru OK. She will probably
be groggy for at least 24 hours, and may seek a very warm spot for
comfort. You might want to keep her confined so she doesn't over-exert
herself. Cats don't always realize that they need R&R. Also, your
vet may recommend certain limited foods at first.

It's so worrisome when older pets have health problems. Please
continue to update her progress for us. It could be reassuring
to other FELINERS who may have to go thru this with their own kitties.

    Best whiskers,

    Cathy

He didn't specify any special attention we should give (yet) I'm sure
we'll get all the specifics when we pick her up tomorrow. I can't wait
to see her and give her hugs!! That'll be alot of special attention
    right there!

    Mel -

I'm so glad Felix is doing well. Have you thought about visiting her
tonight? I'm sure she would love to see her Mom and get all those hugs
    a day early!

    Thanks for keeping us posted.

3072.12I'm not so sure 'bout thatWMOIS::MBROWNTue Nov 21 1989 18:378
    I don't know if that's such a good idea(although I've thought alot
about it and want to desperately) because If she sees me, then she'll
want to leave w/me when I leave. I think I'd better just wait till
tomorrow, so I don't depress her any more than she already is.

    MAybe, we'll see.

3072.15The VisitWMOIS::MBROWNWed Nov 22 1989 11:1317
    Mary,

I took your advice, and I went to visit her in the recovery room (Ward
B). The Vet recommended that I come to see her, they said that
visiting them sometimes speeds up their recovery and perks the animals
up a bit. Felix was very groggy. I was surprised to see that she was
getting up and trying to walk a bit, although she really was very weak.
Course with the lack of food or water and the affects of the anesthesia
and all, it's to be expected.

I can't wait to pick her up tonight. I've got a nice warm bed for her
to rest in. We're gonna pamper her the next few days!!

    Happy Holiday,

Well all's well. Felix is finally back to normal. After I picked her
up (the day before thanksgiving) she seemed to still be groggy and very
shaky. She jumped at the littlest of noises. On thanksgiving we had
dinner at our relatives house across town, So I went home to check on
her and to feed her (because she was very hungry) although all she
would eat was baby food, due to the stitches on her neck.

That evening when we got home, we weren't home for more than a half
hour, and she had an aweful seizure!! It literally threw a FIT on the
kitchen floor. I thought she was on her last breath. After the
seizure she laid still for a few minutes, only to get up and walk to
walk in circles. She wouldn't stop. I immediateley called the VET and
he said he wanted to see her right away. On the way there, she had
another one in my car (it was hard enought to drive in the snow and
all) Thank God I wasn't the one holding her. When we arrived, the Vet
informed us that sometimes it takes a few days or just hours for the
parathyroid to kick in to produce calcium. He said it sounded like she
was suffering from a lack of calcium and he wanted to keep her a few
nights w/an IV of calcium to replenish her supply. It did her a world
    of good.

Thank God she made it through all that. Tonight she goes to get her
stitches out. She's 100% better since the surgery, and seizures and
all!! I'll admit there were a few scary moments, but I'm glad we had
it done. She's even gained 2 1/2 lbs, since the operation!! Now she
weighs 8 lbs! She was a toothpick before that.

I'm happy to say that she's back to her OLD self.

thanks again for your support everyone.

    Melissa & "Felix"

Hurray for Felix. Geez, the vet should have warned you about the
potential calcium problem; I would have had a heart attack myself.
