3054.0. "Feline Bulimia" by SMURF::PARADIS (Worshipper of Bacchus) Thu Nov 16 1989 19:53

FORTSC::WILDE mentioned that her cat upchucks anything but IAMS.
Well, four of my kitties also suffer from bulimia in one form
or another, but we haven't been able to trace it to any particular
kind of food YET. Generally we feed them 9-lives and various
kinds of dry food (Friskies, Purina, 9-lives Crunch Meals...).
Thing is, there's no real pattern; the only thing we've been able
to determine is that there's about a 25% chance that one or more
of them will lose it after any given meal... other than that, there's
no particular correlation with any specific brand of food; they'll
be fine on one for a while, then they'll lose it. Switch them to
dry food, and they lose it until they stop losing it, then they're
    fine for a week...

Our vet suggested that maybe there's an enlargement of the
esophagus such that the food isn't really getting down into the
stomach but is lodging there, and if kitty bolts dinner down too
fast it's not likely to stay eaten. An interesting explanation,
and it may have some vailidity since the cats most likely to
lose it are all related, but I'm not sure it's the whole story.
Sometimes they lose it right away after eating (or even WHILE
eating...) and other times they'll be OK for half an hour after
    dinner and THEN lose it.

Anyone else dealt with this problem? Any ideas?

    Thanks,

A lot of cats are allergic to the dye that is found in many foods,
some just can't tolerate "rich food" (food with a high fat content) and
some can't tolerate an abrupt change in diet. Some cats even have food
intolerances (lack of enzymes that are needed to break down certain
    foods)

My twins, who are half Siamese, seem to have all three of the above
problems. I've heard that Siamese in general seem to have sensitive
little tummies. As somone that has both food intolerances and allergies,
I really can really relate to the problems these little critters have.

My mom's cat, Alfie, up-chucks about twice a week - sometimes more
often. She tried switching foods and that didn't seem to matter.
He's also a siamese and a little on the high-strung side. She
has noticed that if he eats real fast it will come right up, or
if he's in one of his nervous moods, especieally if he's been scolded
or scared by something real or imaginary. I have a siamese, Gino,
who never looses it but then I have to check his breathing to see
if he's alive he's so laid back - all 13-1/2 lbs. of him.

If Mao eats too quickly, or is having furball problems she'll
    also lose her food.

I would get the cats off that store bought stuff and try some
of the "Premium" foods like Hills or some of the "natural" cat
foods that aren't full of additives and dyes. These foods are
much better for the cats anyway, but it would help you determine
if it is an allergy to the additives.

Another approach would be to feed boiled rice and chicken (not turkey)
exclusively for a while and see if they lose that. Since those
foods would have no additives it would rule that possibility out.

Gonezo is my culprit, and sometimes Barney. They woof their food down
SO fast, that it comes up equally as fast. Last night, Gonezo threw up
on a mat by the slider and tried to bury it. Out of sight, out of
mind, and mom won't shove him out the door so he'll get sick outside.
