3015.0. "The Last Post" by PARITY::PICONE () Mon Nov 06 1989 23:50

    For those of you lucky enough to live in the greater
    Maynard area, have I got a treat for you.

    I've searched this file and (incredibly) have not found
    any mention of the "Last Post"....

    "Last Post," a retirement home for kitties in Falls
    Village, CT, must be visited to be believed. To quote
    from a recent Hartford Courant article...

         "How do people who visit here react?"

               "Usually it's, 'Oh, my God!' We've had
                some people who couldn't even walk in there.
                It's an Alfred Hitchcock 'The Birds' effect--
                there are just too many. They're everywhere--
                on the beams above you, on the sofas, under
                your feet. People who work here develop a
                way of walking after a while. We sort of shuffle
                and don't lift our feet too high for fear of
                stepping on tails and toes. It's hard to find
                people to work here. One girl lasted 15 minutes.
                We have these industrial can openers, and on her
                first day of work she used one and 200 cats came
                running. It was too much for her; she felt pressured."

    Kitties that live at the Last Post are from people who have
    passed away and arranged for the animals to go there, and
    people with medical problems, or people retiring who can't
    take their kitties with them. The kitties are of every
    color and personality, size and temperment. Most of them
    crave affection, and both times I have been there, I've
    literally been covered with kitties! I could go on and on
    about all the kitties, but most of all I urge you to go!

    The Last Post is located on Belden Street (Route 126) in
    Falls Village, CT. Visiting hours are 11 to 4 daily.
    Their phone is (203)824-0831.

    Enjoy!

    Jan,

    How far away is this place from Hartford, CT? I'd love to
    visit. I live in the Springfield, MA area. Do you have
    directions?

    Why is it that only the Americans have this kind of heaven?!!
3015.3Directions to the Last PostPARITY::PICONETue Nov 07 1989 11:0623
    For directions to the Last Post, I'd recommend pulling out a map.
    The town of Falls Village is in the most northeast corner of
    Connecticut and is not really on a major highway (the old "you can't
    get there from here). It is on Route 126, north of the town
    of Falls Village. The address is #95 Belden St., and there is
    a white wooden sign with a picture of a black kitty that marks
    the turn-off onto their dirt driveway.

    From the Maynard area, I'd recommend taking the Mass Pike to Lee,
    then south on Route 102 (to Stockbridge), then south on Route 7
    to Canaan, CT. In Canaan take Route 44 west, then Route 126
    south. The Last Post will be a mile or two (or three ?)
    south on 126, on the west side of the road.

    My driving times were about 2 1/2 hours from Acton, MA and
    about one hour from Bristol, CT (near Hartford).

    If you don't "do maps" maybe your best bet is to call the Last Post.

    Happy trails!

    Field trip, I love it! I can't think of a better way to spend a
    day. I'd never pass the Panther sniff test when I got home! :-)

    It would be hard to get out of there without a cat or two in my
    pocket.

    I live in Merrimack, NH and have relatives in the Springfield Ma
    area, maybe I'll get to take a gander at Christmas time.

    Feline Heaven Indeed!

    I don't know as the cats are available for adoption, JJ.

    	I didn't think so....(but I may not be able to control myself
    				and sneak one out!! :-) )

    	It really does sound like a wonderful place....

    I mean if one just happens to "follow me home!!" What could you
    do!! ;-) I'm a sucker for a furry face that says I'm yours!!

    Feline funny,

    Sue (Panther & Spot don't want and brothers or sisters!)

3015.12Adoption optionPARITY::PICONEThu Nov 09 1989 20:388
    Although they don't publicize it, the last time I was there I
    overheard one of the workers tell some visitors that kitties
    can be adopted. (I took pictures instead--they don't eat as much!)

    If you do a day trip, it is quite close to Stockbridge/Lenox
    ... the area is full of quaint shops and restaurants.

3015.13Another One for a Field TripLYMPH::SWANTCan't get away from basicsTue Nov 14 1989 20:2311
    Count me in on a field trip, it sounds great. Nancy, I would
    love to meet Jack -- who is only a phantom in this notes file
    since I did not see him at the cat show! Jack are you there?

    I saw flesh and blood Linda Sobek with Magic; Penny Green with
    Blue Hope and Little One; and the one and only Nancy DC with that
    shy scottish fold ... what a great day!

			-- Julie (who wants a blue-point Birmin
			   and a silver tabby Maine Coon to
			   join Tasha and Lily)
3015.14CRUISE::NDCDTN: 297-2313Wed Nov 15 1989 11:036
    To those of you who miss Jack at the shows - PLEASE send him
    mail and cajole, threaten, beg him to show up in Haverhill.
    I'm getting tired of doing these shows by myself but I can't
    convince him to come with me. Perhaps a little added pressure...
      Nancy  DC

3015.15Jack Cunniff, sign in please!FSHQA2::RKAGNOA Cat Makes a Purrfect FriendWed Nov 15 1989 11:5717
    Jack, my husband likes the shows but gets bored very easily there.
    The only time he's interested is when our cats are up in the rings.

    Why don't you come to the show with Nancy and if you get bored,
    I'm sure that Dana would be glad to take off with you for a little
    while, drive around, do "man-stuff," etc. I know how she feels going
    alone; I don't like to either and it's very rare that I can get
    a friend to come along with me.

    So please, Jack, be a sport and accompany your wife to Haverill.
    I mean, just look back at all the nice things she's done for you.
    You'd probably be lost without her!!

    --Roberta (who's husband thinks she's gone off the deep end when
               it comes to cats!)

3015.16CRUISE::NDCDTN: 297-2313Wed Nov 15 1989 14:083
    Roberta - Jack is out sick, but I'll remind him to log in
    and catch up on Feline tonight.
      Thanks  ;-)

    Count me in on any Feline Field Trip. Sounds like a great way to
    spend a happy day. Yeh, Nance. At least I've heard Jack's voice
    on the phone, so I do know that he exists. Sure would be nice to
    meet him, though.

    Um, you see, it's like this.

    I have a peculiar ailment that most system managers have, namely,
    I tend to be invisible.

    but purrhaps I'll be at Haverhill.
