2930.0. "Kirby, Dana is not a litterbox!" by FSHQA2::RKAGNO (A Cat Makes a Purrfect Friend) Tue Oct 10 1989 14:58

Kirby did something this morning that absolutely amazed me and upset
    my other half:

*** HE PEED ALL OVER DANA!!! ***

It was a morning like any other... Kelsey and Kirby on the bed with
us, Kirby playing with our feet and patty-pawing on the comforter
which Dana had wrapped around him. I was just about to settle down
for one last snooze when all of a sudden I hear Dana shouting
obscenities at Kirby. I turned around and his comforter and tee
    shirt were soaked with urine.

I have absolutely no idea what motivated this behavior. Kirby just
turned five months old on September 29th and he is a big kitten,
a lot bigger than Kelsey was at that age. I didn't witness him
in the act and questioned Dana on his actions. He said that Kirby
did not lift his tail and spray, he squatted and peed. While I
was stripping the bed, Kirby had a bewildered look on his face as
if he couldn't believe what he had just done.

I am wondering if Kirby is beginning to display his "manlihood"
and should be neutered earlier than usual or if he is exhibiting
some sort of a behavioral problem. He's never done this before.
There have been no changes whatsoever in our house so if this is
stress related, I will have to try to pinpoint the cause. I also
haven't ruled out the possibility of a bladder infection of some
    sort.

Is what Kirby did an indication that he is trying to assert his
manliness at a very young age? I would like to try to get this
problem under control before it manifests.

    Thanks,
    Roberta

2930.1It could be.....PENPAL::TRACHMANExoticSH=Persian in UnderwearTue Oct 10 1989 15:088
I would firstly think of a urinary tract infection, then maybe
that he just got excited from playing - not realizing that it
was morning, and that he hadn't made a visit to the litter box
and by the time he realized it, it WAS TOO LATE. Maybe have the
vet do a quickie urine check, for your peace-of-mind. It was also
very cold this morning - In Candia, we had a heavy frost.

Elaine, does the cold have anything to do with this? We had quite
a frost this morning as well (pardon my ignorance... I just never
knew the two could be linked).

The litter box is in the basement -- 2 floors below -- so you could
be right. He did go down there to do #2 and I praised him to the
    high heavens.

WElllll, when it's cold, I have to 'go' more often, especially if
I'm outside !!! Kidding aside, you, firstly, are not ignorant,
secondly, if your room was really chilly, it could be linked.
If he was really playing hard with Dana, he really could have
forgotten how much he had to go. Did you say that he had
already been down to the box that morning before he let go
all over Dana (I"m still laughing over that one, sorry Dana) !!!
You might consider giving your vet a call and see what they think.
He may have a little cold - probably nothing to worry about.
    Let me know..

BTW, did you enter Braintree or Marlboro?

Hi Elaine. I had to hold in my laughter until Dana was in the shower,
then I really let go! And yup, the cold weather certainly puts
more pressure on my bladder too so why not Kirby's!! I don't think
he had been down to the litterbox this morning at all, just Kelsey.
And yes, our room was very chilly.

Yup, I entered Braintree but have not received a confirmation back
yet. Marlboro is all set; got that entry in real early. Should
    be a blast!!

Sounds like it is a long way to the litter box. Any chance of moving
    a box upstairs?

2930.6Temperture drops cause Pip to spray VAXWRK::SKALTSISDebTue Oct 10 1989 16:256
I've found that if the temp in the whole house drops below 65, Pip will
spray. So, when the weather gets cold and I turn the heat down in the
house, I leave a portable oil-filled radiator in my bedroom that keeps
the room temp at around 72. Pip spends the day up there and doesn't spray.

Sometimes, they get so involved with playing, they really do "forget"
they have to go! And when they are kittens, they will "wait till
the last minute" the same as kids!!! ;-)

This past week-end I've had to make a couple of "emergency runs"
down to the basement with a kitten in hand, when I caught someone
getting ready to "squat" on the medallion on the oriental rug!!
(It doesn't look much like a litterbox to me, but then again, I'm
not 8 weeks old, either ;-)

    Aren't kittens fun?

Hmmmm. Could be it, berta. Entered all of them, huh??? Hmm,
do I sense a hooked exhibitor???? hmmm!!

    Great!

Keep an eye on him and see how he does - he's probably fine.
2930.9CRUISE::NDCNancy Diettrich-Cunniff-I wanted it allTue Oct 10 1989 17:0912
Isis pee'd on Jack once. Of course, he deserved it! He scared
her. At the time I was SOOOOO angry at him, now that I think back
on it, I think its funny as anything! :-)

Flame used one of our chairs the first day he was at the house.
I think its because he wasn't used to two story houses and had
never used a covered box before. We put a box in the diningroom
and there's been no trouble since.
Maybe Kirby needs a closer box. How about a small one in the
    bathroom.
Nancy who hopes you got entered in Braintree in time!

2930.10Did you spill something, dear?SWAT::COCHRANEBrace yourself - a brace of cats!Tue Oct 10 1989 17:189
Oh yes, that reminds me. I don't think Ian or I will forget the
time right after we first got Dream and Ian tried to give her
her medicine. She *hates* having anything done except petting
and brushing. Ian chased her all over the condo trying to catch
her, and got her so upset, she finally climbed up *into* our recliner
and let go! Try cleaning *that* up!!! ;-) Didn't like that
    recliner much anyway......

The box has been in the basement for several months and Kirby has
never had an accident until this morning. The more I think about
the cold, the more I think that is a possibility. If it happens
again, a trip to the vet is in order as well as a closer litter
box. Either that or a warmer house!!

Elaine, go easy on Dana in Braintree! He's a pretty sensitive guy!!
    I'm still laughing though!!

Kirby kept going over to him last night and rolling at his feet
as if begging for forgiveness. He was up on the bed again this
morning patty-pawing and purring but not peeing, thank God!

Still no confirmation from Meg for Braintree. We're only entered
    for Saturday, not Sunday.

Where is the next CFF show after Marlboro?

    re:19

well, I agree - that baby is regal - a King of Kings. It's his
face - or is it that searching look he has when he is in the ring,
checking out the cage next to his to see if there is a girl in it?
Hmm, oh boy, a girl - the heck with this judging stuff, just give
    me a girl, mom!
