2926.0. "food of the dogs" by COGITO::SPINNEY (The truth will make you flee) Mon Oct 09 1989 18:14

Er..does anyone else have a cat that will only eat the
dog's food and the dog who will only eat the cat's food.

I went home at lunch and they were at it again..three cats
with their faces in the bowl of Eukenuba and the puppy
    munching on Tami Ami....!!!

I have tried separating the food but the cats jump the gate
to get at the dog food and the puppy knocls down the gate to
    get at the cat's food.

Mozie, and Abby purr like fools after sticking there snoots in
a bowl of Alpo and the puppy sits up and begs for Nine lives
    kitty stew!!

Is the gang perhaps having identity crisis? More important
is there something in or lacking in the cats food and the
dogs food that could cause a problem to the cats who eat
the dogs stuff and vice versa????

    thanks,
    Fran

The cat food will have protein levels that are too high for the
puppy. The dog food will be lacking in Taurine, which is a very
important amino acid for cats. Lack of taurine in the diet has
been linked with cardiomyopathy, and blindness in cats.

oh dear, I figured there was probably important differences.
I can't understand their preference for each others food...maybe
it's just because it's new stuff. I'll probably have to crate
the puppy while the cats eat and I best not leave the food out
    as I have been...
Jemma will miss her Gaines Burgers...

2926.3This works in my house!DANAPT::DEFRANCO_JEMon Oct 09 1989 19:4612
What a familiar problem! I think all animals like best what is
forbidden to them. I have solved the problem by feeding the cats
on the kitchen counter and feeding the dog under supervision. I
also don't allow the dog to doddle over her food. If she doesn't
eat within five minutes, I pick it up and try her again a few hours
later. If this doesn't work, she has to wait until the next day
to eat. Needless to say, this has only happened once! This way,
I don't have dog food hanging around all day for the cats to eat!

I have a similar problem but it only involves three different
cats -- one geriatric and one overweight and one just right.

I set up three inexpensive cat cages and each is fed in her or
his own cage. This has worked great. Of course, then I have to
let them out after feeding. I feed them twice a day.

    The advantages are
    	(1) that I know just who has eaten what and
        (2) when medications need to be given after meals that little
kitty is trapped and can't run under the bed and hide.

I tried separating the food yesterday...the puppy sulked and
wouldn't eat, so I took it up, put it back down an hour later..
and he sulked..:-(( same thing this morning...

do you think he is just trying to get his way? he's spoiled,
I admit my guilt. but I'm worried that he hasn't eaten..

I would think he'll eat when he gets really hungry!

Maybe he doesn't really like his dog food?

Thunder (cat) used to eat her food until Keisha's (dog) food was put
down. Then she would dash madly over to Keisha's dish before the *dog*
got there. Then she would go back to her's, Lightning's, Deja's and
anything else she could beg from me or my daughter.

Now that Keisha is gone and Storm is the new dog in the house, she
doesn't do it anymore. I sort of miss this little antic of her's.

Sandi & THUNDER, LIGHTNING, STORM & DEJAVU too

well, I tried putting down just one bowl at a time...the puppy had
a spaz attack when Mozie dipped into his food....but he still
insists on eating the cat food as well if he can get at it. Mozie
however will share his food with the dog..
I'm hoping that if they go back and forth between each others food
they are at least getting there own in as well. Still, it's
a hassle juggling food and pets and bowls and toys......
