2898.0. "This is hard to write." by FENNEL::STUDLEY () Thu Sep 28 1989 18:51

I need to find new homes for my kitties. Let me tell you a
    little about them.

Patch is 2.5 years old. She has medium length fur, white with
black markings. She is a bit on the thin side, very sweet and
affectionate. She is used to other cats and is very good with
children. She is an indoor/outdoor cat. Although she does
spend most of her time in the house, Patch does find it necessary
to get out for air occasionally but doesn't stay out long at all.

Rascal is 14 months old. She also has medium length fur, black
with white mittens and boots and white on her belly. She is on
the shy side. She will come by for an occasional pat on the head,
but is content to be by herself. She is an indoor only cat.

This is extremely difficult for me to do. I love Patch and
Rascal very much, but we have a problem. My grandson was born
5 days ago with respiratory problems (they live with us). The
doctor gave us a long list of things to do to help him breath
easier. One thing was NO ANIMALS. We need to place the kitties
as soon as possible. If I haven't found homes for them by the
weekend, I'll have to bring them to a shelter.

If anyone is interested in Patch or Rascal and want to know more
about them, please send me mail at NUTMEG::STUDLEY, or you can
call me at home in the evening, (603) 595-2099. We are located
in Nashua, NH, but I would be willing to bring them anywhere for
    a good home.

    Thanks,

    Janet

Cats aren't necessarily the culprit with respiratory problems.
I have a friend with respiratory problems, and her 5 year old
has respiratory problems, and neither of them are bothered
by cats. I think the doctor is engaging in overkill at the
expense of your cats. I suggest a good allergist to determine
whether the cats are a problem or not.

Since the baby is only 5 days old, and has respitory problems now,
I would probably take the conservative approach and try to find
foster homes for the cats right away. This must be heartbreaking
for you. Perhaps later on you will be able to bring your kitties
    back home.

If you do have to resort to a shelter, I believe that Nashua
Humane is a no kill shelter - some one verify this for me.
There's also Kitty Angels In Tyngsboro Mass. In case you
aren't familiar with shelters, "no kill" means that the cats
are kept as long as necessary to place them. It also means that
the shelter has to limit the number of animals it takes. The
alternative is to put the animals to sleep when new animals come
in and there's no more space.
a fosterhome might be the best short-term solution while you
continue looking for a permanent home. Try putting some ads up
at local churches, vets, & grocery stores and screen applicants
    carefully.
      Good luck.

I agree with the foster-home idea. My sister's first child was born
with allergies. My sister also owned a pet-shop and worked there days.
Her daughter was in the back area but close to the animals. She
out-grew the allergies. I do understand your urgency in this matter
and do feel for you. Unfortunately I am already over max in my
    house-hold.

The Humane Society in Nashua is not a no-kill shelter
but they VERY SELDOM put an animal down. They will keep
it as long as possible for a home to be found. They are
    	very nice there.

The Nashua Humane Society Shelter keeps their cats/kittens until they
are placed as long as they don't get overcrowded and run out of empty
cages. You are right though, JJ, they are very nice there and do
whatever necessary to place all their animals, including the numerous
pet guinea pigs and rabbits also turned in there. I wish they were
having better luck lately though with the "Pet of the Week" newspaper
    photos of adoptable cats. :-(
