2892.0. "New owner needs vet, info" by SASE::GRAY () Wed Sep 27 1989 14:14

Does anyone have a suggestion for a vet near Boxborough-Acton-Concord?

I'm going to become a new cat owner on Friday and the previous owners
have offered to pre-pay for her shots.

What shots should she be getting? Also, what are typical fees for
routine physical exams, emergencies, etc? I'm sure it varies for
each situation, but I'm looking for ballpark figures.

And, are there magazines I should be reading? (It seems like this
notes file can keep me pretty current!) A good cat care book?

Lastly, are there inexpensive animal supply stores? Where's the
    cheapest litter?

    Anything else?

    I'm excited!

Debbie,

Congratulations on your new cat - you probably don't know what
you're in for!

As a hint, there's lots and lots of info in this file already
covering what you're looking for. Try the following NOTES
commands:

SHOW KEY/FU NEW_CAT
SHOW KEY/FU VETS

Both commands will give you a list of the notes that cover these
topics which you can then read for more information.

Good luck,
Pam
2892.2Got it!SASE::GRAYWed Sep 27 1989 15:228
    Thanks for the information, Pam!

I had previously tried dir/keyword= and got two "no notes" messages.
     Now I know.

    Best,
    Debbie

    Hi Debbie,

If your in the Acton/Concord Area, the best place to buy your food and
supplies will probably be Erickson's Grain Mill on Rt 27 in Maynard.
The prices are very reasonable, and they carry a wide variety of
    products and brands.

I can't really recommend a vet in the area, but maybe someone else can.
I'm from Fitchburg, but work in Concord. I buy all my supplies (that I
don't get at the cat shows) at Erickson's.

They carry the Blue Seal foods and Bil-Jac if your looking for
    something without Ethoxyquin.

2892.4Oh yeah...SASE::GRAYWed Sep 27 1989 16:4818
    Hi Cin,

Thanks for reminding me about Erickson's -- I go there infrequently
to buy huge sacks of birdseed (kitty will love to watch the birds, I'm
sure), but never paid attention to the cat food section.

But I need some schooling. What's ethoxyquin?

By the way, I got information on vets by doing a show key, but am
still looking for books or cat magazines.

I gotta get off this notes file, this is addictive!

    Best,
    Debbie

See note 4 for books on cats. As for magazines, I don't remember
any notes on those. However, if you read this file regularly
you'll learn *alot* about cats.

Welcome Welcome!! I liked Apple Country Animal Hosp in Stow.
Not terribly convenient to Concord, but the only one I
know anything about in that area.

You might want to get subscriptions to Cats & Cat Fancy.
Send me your mailstop and I'll send you the "blow ins"
    for subscriptions.

re: ethoxyquin - is a preservative used in some dry cat
and dog foods that has been the subject of a great deal
of controversy lately. Some of us have opted to feed
foods that are ethoxyquin-free, myself included. There
is a note with many many replies dedicated to the subject.
    I don't recall which one, but a dir/title="ethoxquin" will
    find it for you.

    resonable..

    Good Luck,

...it's right by the Triple A supermarket. Josh & Becky used to go there when
I lived in Acton. I liked Dr. Smith a lot.
