2875.0. "Feline Asthma" by REDWOD::GRAFTON () Wed Sep 20 1989 15:06

As I mentioned in one or two other notes, one of our new cats has Feline
Asthma. Rocky was treated initially with a shot of cortisone to combat the
reaction and is currently taking an antibiotic to reduce the fluid in his
lungs and a bronchial dilator to open his passageways. He goes back in
two weeks for a check-up and to see how we should proceed. Rocky is 9
years old and has not had any previous attacks that we know of.

Do any of you have asthmatic cats or have experience with cats who are
asthmatic? I'm curious as to what on-going treatment may be in store for
us and what to do if he has a serious, immediate attack. I'll be continuing
to talk with our vet but I would like to hear from those who have had first-
hand experience dealing with it on a day-to-day basis.

Thanks for any info,

Jill

I have a cat (Morris ) that was diagnosed a couple of weeks ago
as having Feline Bronchial Asthma. Morris isn't as bad as Rocky.
I took him to the Vet originally because his heart-beat was really
rapid and he started panting at times.

The vet took an x-ray and Morris's lungs were inflammed and the
vet remembered that I had problems with Morris coughing a couple
    of months ago.

The vet gave Morris a shot of steroid which did make the rapid heart
beat go down. He also suggested that we try to keep Morris stress
free because apparently that's what brings on an attack.

It's been a couple of weeks now and Morris is fine. He never had
any attacks before this either. I guess it's just one of those
things. Morris is 6 years old.

I hope your Rocky is feeling better!!

My 14-year-old, male Siamese, Tasha, was diagnosed this summer as
having asthma. He was immediately put on prednisone every third
day. (One tablet cut into fourths for each dosage).

What a difference! He occasionally had dry, coughing spells
which resulted in his food being thrown up. This has all stopped
since he has been on the medication.

He takes daily medication for arthritis also. He is so much
calmer since his asthma has been brought under control. He has
become an affectionate cat in his old age.

2875.3Rocky's on Prednisone nowBIGSUR::GRAFTON_JIThu Oct 12 1989 21:268
    Thanks for the information.

At Rocky's check-up, he was pronounced healthy but will now start
taking one prednisone tablet every other day. So far, so good.
I'm really glad he's so easy to pill; drop it in the back of his
    throat and it's gone!
