2853.0. "What about Mama?" by BLKWDO::PARKS () Tue Sep 12 1989 22:24

There was a family of cats living in the drain here at work. The family
consisted of "mama cat" three 5 month old cats and six 6 week old kittens.
Apparently, "mama cat" has had two litters this summer.
The small kittens are all gone now (I caught and found homes for 3), but
the older kittens and the mama are still there. The kittens are wild and
fend for themselves, but the mama must have been a pet because she is
tame and craving attention. It doesn't seem fair that her kittens
found homes but nobody wants mama. (She looks in pretty bad shape, I
call her Dishevele' as in disheveled).

I feed them every day, but I think the mama deserves a better home than
a drain and Security is talking about doing "something about those cats".
The older kittens probably should be trapped and tamed and I am discussing
that with some others, but nobody wants the mama!
The mama is so sweet! She's a very small brown and grey tabby with green
eyes, pretty common, but pretty all the same. I want to get her cleaned up,
spayed, and find her a home, but that's so expensive!!

I don't want to take her to the pound!! In her shape she'll never
find a home in the pound.

I know that there are lots of stray cats out there and this frustration
is common, but this one deserves a good home as much as your cat or mine.
I would like to keep her myself, but I can't afford it.
What can I do!?!?

Does anyone know of organizations (in Arizona) that help in this situation?
Or am I stuck with the pound?

Dishevele' and I will appreciate any suggestions.

Becky

I would be willing to contribute to a fund to have Dishevele (sp?)
spayed. Let me know - my DTN is 264-1727 and my vaxmail account
    is CGVAX2::LANDRY.

Poor baby! Maybe if you do have her spayed, a shelter would be willing
to find her a good home. Good luck, and let me know.

2853.4Yeah!!! a home already!!!BLKWDO::PARKSWed Sep 13 1989 17:5416
GOOD NEWS!!

With everyone's help, I have already found a home for her!!!

I found someone who will take her if she is checked out, vaccinated,
and spayed and have received help from a couple of feliners.

I really appreciate everyone's help.
A year ago I would have looked at Dishevele' and her kittens and thought
"someone will take care of it". I am very proud of myself for placing
these four fortunate strays and very thankful to all of you for your help.
The Digital Feliners have given me a completely new attitude toward cats.

THANKS AGAIN!!

We're proud of you too! Its wonderful to feel like you
can make a positive impact on the world! And you know what else?
You're providing a wonderful model for other people to follow.
I had one person tell me once that I was responsible for her taking
in a stray dog and taking care of it and finding it a home because
I had taking in a stray cat! I can't tell you how good that made
    me feel.
So ENJOY feeling what a good thing you did. And if we can help,
    let us know.

There are some really decent people left in the world. I have an
extra female certificate I will give to anyone that has a cat that
is in dire need of a home. My father brought in a pretty female
and my wife sent away to get the cert. and when she brought her
to the vet, he said she had already been done. So I hope it can
go to some abandond kitty that needs a home....

I am so glad to see Mama has a home and that 3 of her babies have
    homes.

I was just wondering what happened/happens with the rest of the
babies??? Is there someone helping you with them?? She had 6 little
ones and 3 of them have homes. What happened to the other 3??

I'm just curious. I really think you did a SUPER job of placing Mama
and some of her babies so far. I know how hard it is to fina a home
for a Mama cat (thanks to a friend, Mama is residing with one of her
    children).

2853.8mama's new homeBLKWDO::PARKSMon Sep 18 1989 01:2767
Well, the mama cat is in her new home with Liza and adjusting very well.
Liza has another cat, Marvin, that she named after the man she got him
from, so she stuck to tradition and named mama cat Becky("Becky kitty"
around me to avoid confusion).

Becky kitty did very well at the vet's. The vet poked and prodded and she
sat there PURRING! She checked out fine in every category (didn't even
have worms!).

At Liza's house, we put her in the utility room (where the litter box
and food is), left the door open, and let her come out on her own.
She came out right away and started exploring. She was already acting
like she owned the place and following Liza's 2 year old all over.
Then she saw Marvin. Marvin is a 16 pound fatso that looks like Garfield
(same color and everything) and Becky kitty is only 6 pounds. We were
a little worried, but Marvin is such a Woos! When Becky kitty growled,
Marvin tried to sneak away and Becky kitty was right behind him b*tching.
When she got tired of that she just followed the 2 year old around again
watching everything she did and pausing for a pat from her now and then.
We ate dinner and she just laid on the kitchen floor watching us. I got
the feeling that now that she had people of her own, she was not going to
let them out of her sight.

She was looking so at home that we decided to introduce Cleo. Cleo is an
8 yr. old Newfoundland, Lab mix. What a funny scene. Cleo came in walked
by Becky kitty and said "oh another cat, big deal". In the meantime Becky
kitty was puffed and spatting, but standing her ground saying "what are you
doing in MY house?!" Cleo just laid down on the other side of the kitchen
and Becky kitty looked almost let down "you mean you aren't gonna fight me
for the kitchen? Then I guess it's mine." After a couple of minutes she
laid back down and cat napped.

Well, this was almost a disappointment to us, so we decided to introduce
Carl(poor kitty, will this never end?). Carl is a 6 month old
Dobie, shepherd mix and a bundle of energy. This was also a let down.
They ignored each other. Not even a spat. I guess Becky kitty figured
Carl wasn't worth it. "Puppies (even huge ones) are easy enough to put
in their place and I'm too tired to do it right now."

Liza and I sat down to dessert and just watched all the animals sleep.
It was surprisingly uneventful. I'm sure they'll all avoid each other
for awhile, but they are off to a very good start.

Becky kitty seemed so happy to be in a house with people! She ate her fill,
took all the attention she could(even from the 2 yr. old), then settled down
for a nap.

Liza is going to keep Becky kitty confined to the utility room when no
people are there to make sure she will use the litter box. When she
passes that test, she will have full rule of the house, literally.

Becky

P.S.
The remaining kitties are about 5-6 months and are too skiddish to catch.
I have some traps reserved for the end of next week and will try to catch
as many of the three as I can. I don't know what to do with them after
I catch them though. They are basically wild kitties. I can't very
well bring them home to a one bedroom apt. with Nami, there's nowhere to
keep them separate. If I take them to the pound they probably won't
have much of a chance. I doubt they will take the time to tame them
and put them up for adoption. They told me that they keep wild cats
for three days, but don't put them up for adoption. Do you think they
could be tamed in those three days? I am going to try to catch them
though. Even if I have to take them to the pound, at least I'll be
saving more unborn kitties from homelessness. Does anyone have any
other suggestions?
2853.9could you spend a little time socializing them?WONDER::SKALTSISDebMon Sep 18 1989 16:269
Well, Spiro and Niky could be easily described as "wild" when I
first adopted them. Neutering did wonders for their personality,
but it took a few weeks to get them to trust me. Since these cats
are still kittens, it might be easier. Perhaps, after you catch
them you could keep them for a little while and just get them to
learn to not be afraid of people? They would then have a much better
    chance of being adopted.

Is there any possibility of lining up homes with folks who would
    tolerate
the several weeks it takes to "domesticate" wild cats? My first cat
was originally feral, and he turned into a complete love. There are
a number of notes in this file about the same type of experience.
The owners do have to have a lot of patience the first few weeks, even
the first few months if the animal has been abused.

2853.11update on "Mama's Family"BLKWDO::PARKSTue Sep 26 1989 18:5420
I trapped the remaining three cats over the weekend.
They look to be about 5-6 months old, but I'm not sure. I think two are
female, I hope I got them it time....we wouldn't want any more before
they are fixed.

Anyway, I did not have to take them to the Humane Society!!
I found someone who would take all three, spay/neuter them and find
them homes. (I have a couple of helpers and we are hitting people
up here at work for donations for the spays/neuter.)
Apparently this person has a large house and backyard.
She takes in stray and abbandoned animals until she can find a home for
them.
I would love to be able to do this!! My limitations are size of
my aparatment and money. However, I have found another way to help.
I am attending a meeting tomorrow night of Concerned Arizonans for
Animal Rights and Ethics(CAARE). They do things like set up tables at
malls, write letters, etc. Some of the individual members have houses
like the woman's who took my three.
