2820.0. "Help needed... " by 4GL::LANDRY () Fri Sep 01 1989 12:50

What follows is a problem that I've seen in this notes file again and
again, so no flames please, I need suggestions.

I live in an apartment complex and there are quite a few stray cats that
live behind my building - probably on the order of ten to fifteen homeless
cats. The reason that there are so many is because there are two cats,
a male and a female, who are continuously populating the area. The mom cat
is approximately 2 1/2 years old and averages having two to three litters
every summer (someone told me she had three last summer and she is working
on her third one now). Right now there are five kittens (maybe 2-3 months
old) that I have been feeding at night and they are adorable. Four of them
are black with a white chest, white feet, and beautiful green eyes. The
fifth looks like its father and is a grey tiger cat. The mother is pregnant
  again!

What can I do to stop this? The mother is absolutely unapproachable - if I
could catch her I would bring her in to be spayed. But there are also a couple
of younger cats from her litters last year and now all of these new kittens.
A couple of the kittens will let me touch them when I feed them - yes, I am
feeding them because they look so helpless and hungry. Another couple from
the complex is also feeding them and we would both like to do something but
do not know what to do.

Before anyone suggests that I should catch and keep the kittens I would like
to say that I would LOVE to - but I already have two cats in a very small
apartment whose official stance is NO PETS, although they do look the other
way. Any suggestions on how to catch these cats/kittens and where do bring
them once I do would be greatly appreciated.

 Thanks!
  Terri

First let me say that you shouldn't feel guilty for not being able to
keep all of those homeless babies. But please, give yourself credit
for trying to help, you are a good Doobie!!!

To catch mother cat you may have to resort to a Hav-A-Heart trap. Your
local Humane society may be able to let you borrow one or maybe you can
    rent one somewhere.

Bait should be something with a strong enticing aroma, like tuna or
some commercial cat food. Be patient you may trap a lot kittens first
:-). But if Mama is pregnant she may decide to enter the trap for the
food, the poor thing sounds like she could really use a good meal.

Then you should take her IN THE TRAP, (if she is very wild you could
lose her or get badly scrathced trying to put her in something else,)
to the shelter of your choice. The Kittens, that survive will probably
start breeding soon, so you may want to take them to a shelter also.

I know that runs into money, but if you need assistance in that area,
please let us know, I'm sure that I would be happy to make a dontaion
to get these poor cats out of the woods before winter and maybe fellow
Feliners would be willing to help too.

You have a kind heart to try to help out these homeless kitties, I may
be far away, but if there is anything I can do to help, please let me
    know!

    Hi there................

I first want to say thank you for not ignoring the problem.....
There are so many animals out there it is scary. There is no way
in the world you should feel guilty for not keeping the cats/kittens.
<Trying to do for them is enough. You can really get to deep into
it if you worry enough about the situation. I know! From past notes
you will see we are in the same boat. The only difference is we
have three that we fell in love with and kept and two that are being
fostered till I find a home.

I would like to say this if I may. Get a have a heart trap and
catch each one. Make sure you catch them all. If one is left behind,
you will be faced with the same problem shortly once again. It is
a frustrating situation that I wish I could help out with. (Maybe
I can keep the cats you catch, you you can keep the ones I am catching
    right now) :)

You can try to find homes for them through this file and others:
Classified, and Small animals, but you may have to resort to Humane
societies. There do not seem to be many people who are interested
in taking feral cats, No matter how tame they are. It is a fact
of life that gets very hard to be accustomed to.

Good luck with them, and if there is any suggestions/help I
can supply contact me SALEM::WHITEWAY. DTN: 285-2304. I will do
    what I can to help.

Thanks for everyone's words of encouragement. I called the Nashua Humane
Society and they rent out the HAVE-A-HEART traps for $1.50 a day plus a
$55 deposit on the trap itself so I will be picking one up this weekend
 most likely.

Unfortunately, since I really can't keep any of them for any period of time,
I will have to bring them to the humane society as soon as I catch them, which
will probably break my heart 8>(! Since they are wild animals the humane
society won't charge me anything to leave them there so for those who offered
monetary help - it won't be needed (but thanks for the thought!). I'll keep
everyone posted as to whether or not I catch any of them.

    Terri -
I'll be happy to help with a donation too. Also, if you decide
to do something other than take them to the shelter I can offer
low cost spay applications - maybe if you can place some of the
    kittens these would help.
The Jimmy Smith Fund for animals in Somerville specializes in
feral cats. Also Lenora Palmer (DLNVAX::PALMER) works with the
Framingham Humane society catching a rehabilitating feral cats.
Lenora is up to her ears in kittens right now, so don't ask her
to take any of the kittens, but she'd be an excellent source
of advice in dealing with feral cats.
Best of Luck and thanks for caring!!!!! Its nice to know there
are people like you in the world. Makes me feel a whole lot more
    hopeful
