| Siamese refers to the breed. A Siamese cat has a particular pattern
of color on the coat. That is that the face, legs, ears, and tail
are in a color that is different than the coat. The pattern is
sometimes refered to as siamese in the case of non-purebreds. It
is also refered to as pointing, masking, and sometimes himilayan.
The important thing to note about the pattern is that is is restricted
to the extremities of the cat, the face, legs, ears, and tail.
The points come in many colors and and patterns. There is seal
point, blue point, chocolate point, and lilac point (also called frost
in some associations). Those are the basic colors. Other colors are red
point, and cream point. Lynx point means that the cats extremities
are colored, but with the tabby pattern. In this case, the tabby
markings are confined to only the head, ears, legs and tail. There
is also tortie point. Tortie point means that the cat is
tortoiseshell, but only on the extremities.
The to complicate it further, Lynx points can be different colors,
blue lynx point (gray stripings), seal lynx point, chocolate lynx
point, lilac lynx point. Also, tortie points can be seal tortie
points (seal and red), chocolate tortie points, or blue cream points.
So, with your cat, sealpoint refers to the color he has on his
extremities, and Siamese is the breed of cat that he is.
I breed Birmans, who are also a pointed cat, but they are longhairs
and have white feet. Birmans currently are only recognized in four
colors, blue, seal, chocolate, and lilac (in CFA).
Other breeds of pointed cats:
Balinese - longhaired siamese
Javanese - the name that CFA has given to lynx pointed Balinese
Oriental shorthair - in CFA, lynx pointed Siamese compete in this
class, along with Siamese who are not pointed.
Himilayan - In CFA, these cats are called Persians. They are blue
point persian, seal point persian, etc. In other associations,
Himilayan is a breed in itself.
Exotic shorthair - they are now recognized by CFA in the pointed
pattern. An Exotic Shorthair is a short haired Persian cat. (or
as I like to call them, a Persian in it's underwear).
Ragdoll - this breed is not recognized by CFA, but it can come in
pointed patterns. They also come in mitted (with white feet), and
bi-color patterns.
I probably forgot a breed or two, but basically I think you have
a good idea of what a pointed cat is now.

| Hi,
Jo gave a wonderful and learned dissertation on Siamese cats. But Jo,
as good as you are I think you left out the best traits of the breed.
Being Siamese is mostly and attitude!! I know because I am One!!!
I'm an all black Siamese, and I am the most elegant cat there is. I
love to show people how smart I am, even if it makes Mummie look dumb,
and there isn't an art object ever created that is more beautiful than
I am. I know, I've checked out all the man made stuff that ever came
into my world, and I'm better.
I'm a very intellegent cat. I can sit and think for hours, Mummie says
I have the problems of the world solved, but I won't tell, you humans
must work these things out for yourselves.
I'm also quite an athlete. I can jump and run like the wind and do
acrobatics that are both gracefull and funny!!
I also like to cuddle with Mummie and Daddy. I'm definetaly a lap cat
especially with MY humans, I'm friendly and I like the poeple that come
to visit me, but I don't want them to get too familiar, after all, I am
not a common cat, I won't be pawed by just any human. But I will sit
and converse, if the human is also intellegent.
So if you have a Siamese cat please consider yourself privleged that a
cat of distenction has choosen you to be his/her human. That makes you
rather special you know.
Bye for Meow,
Panther, (As told to Sue,(Mummie) Panther doesn't type english)
