2777.0. "Need some advice." by CGVAX2::LANDRY () Fri Aug 18 1989 13:29

Well, I usually don't write to this notes file but I am always reading
it since I have 2 beautiful furfaces. I need some advice, but this
concerns a dog rather than a kitty. I feel more comfortable writing
    to you "feliners".

I have been wanting to get a dog for some time and decided that
last weekend was it. I went to the Gofffstown Animal Rescue League
because I felt that I would rather "save" a dog than buy one. But,
I think I made a mistake. The puppy I picked out is as follows:
3 1/2 mos old, a lab and afghan mix (more lab than afghan). The
trouble that my husband and I are having is that this puppy is
HYPER. She is constantly jumping and nipping at my arms and legs,
she is ruining our rock garden (we would like to let her roam in
our backyard because it is big and fenced in and has alot of pine
trees). We tried to tie her to a runner but she doesn't like that
(unless we let her on our screened in porch while she is on the
runner), she has chewed one of our lawn chairs to bits (understandable
as a puppy, but we give her plenty of things to chew on).

Anyway, not to get long-winded, we can not control her. I have
tried commands and the usual things you do to train a dog, but she
*doesn't even listen*, not even alittle. She just jumps and jumps.
My dilema is should I bring her back before I get too attached
to her (even tho I already am and it will tear my heart to bring
her back). Will this type of dog change, or will I have to leave
it outside all the time because it is so destructive? I just don't
know anymore. I would like a dog I can semi leave out but also
    have in the house sometimes.

And the worst thing is my cats hate me. They feel this dog is in
their territory and all they do is hide under the bed. They won't
even sit on our screened in porch anymore (something they *love*
to do). Believe me, I try to make it up to them with extra love
and kisses, but they aren't forgiving me.

Any advice you can give me would be appreciated. Maybe I should
put this in the CANINE notes, does anyone know which node it is
    on?

    Thanks in advance.

    Anna

Anna, I don't have a dog so I have no sound advice to offer; however,
you might try cross-posting this note in Canine. There are several
knowledgable people in that file who can help you with your problem.

I grew up with a purebred Afghan rescued from an abusive home and
they are a high-strung breed. I would hate to see you bring your
puppy back to the shelter, or even worse, sentence it to a life
outside. You might try crating; again, check canine for specifics.
Contrary to what people believe, crating a dog is not cruel if done
    properly.

    Good luck.

    Roberta,

Do you happen to know the node CANINE is on?

Thanks for your response. Doing the best thing for the puppy is
    my main concern.

    Anna,
Please call Gail Fisher of Canine Behavior Services. You will
probably get a recording but leave a message. Obedience classes
should be starting soon in Goffstown so you might want to consider
them. There are alot of notes and helpful people in Canine and
you may get good results there. Good Luck and Congratulation on
    your new addition.   (CVG::CANINE)

our black lab is now 2 years old. and 2 weeks ago we just picked
up a 6 week old black lab pup. my kitty princess acted the same
way as yours. she definetly felt like her home was invaded, but
after time she soon came around, so i would give it a little more
time they may end up best friends. when our 2 year old started to
chew we went out and bought some bitter apple. i think we bought
it at the Fair. you simply spray it on your furniture and it keeps
the animals away. it's not harmful to your pets or furniture. and
as the dog matures, their hyperness calms down, at least thats what
    i noticed in our dog.

                 good luck

I think that checking in Canine would be a good idea. There are
lots of notes from people who are having the same trouble that you
are. Most of the Caniners will recommend crate training, and obedience
training for your problem. Do a dir/keyword=crate and you should
find many notes on the subject. Do the same thing for the obedience
notes. Several of the Caniners are also dog trainers so they could
    offer you some assistance.

I will be going through the same thing you are in a few short weeks.
Ken and I have decided to get a dog too, and ours was born just
a couple of weeks ago. We decided on a Bernese Mt. Dog, I seem
to be drawn to animals that have white feet. ;^) I am sure that
I will have a houseful of cats that won't speak to me for weeks.
But, just remember, that is their natural reaction, and with time,
they will forgive you and will also learn to cohabitate with the
    dog.

    Good luck,

Jo, I saw a Bernese Mountain Dog on a dog show that was televised
recently (Purina Invitational). He was really something else! Big and
furry with a white chest and white feet. I had never even heard
of them until watching this dog show.

I want to thank those of you, again, who referred me to the Canine
file. The advice is already coming in and I feel much better already.
Little Lady and I are gonna get along just fine - after some schooling
    of course.

And as for my little furfaces, I will continue to spoil them until
they feel comfortable (or semi-comfortable, anyway).

2777.8WR2FOR::CORDESBRO_JOFri Aug 18 1989 17:4830
    Roberta,

I had narrowed my choices down to two, Bernese or a Belgian Terverun.
I decided on the Bernese due to their more laid back nature (with
20+ cats, I *had* to consider that), and those gorgeous white markings.
I found both a breeder of Tervuren and a breeder of Bernese through
Canine. After many months of looking, we finally will be getting
a puppy soon. (hopefully, nothing has been promised yet, but we
    are pretty sure).

The Canine file has been very helpful to me in my search, and also
in the learning process. They have recommended books, pointed me
to notes on crating, helped me locate breeders.

Now, all I have to do is come up with the perfect A name for the
dog! Any and all suggestions will be gratefully accepted. It must
be a name with dignity (well, maybe not), and both boys and girls
    names will be accepted.

Sire's name is Attitude A'juster and Dam's name is Shambala.

I would love to come up with a name that relates to either parent's
name, have considered Ain't Misbehavin, but don't know what we would
call the dog (Missy? for a girl, but what for a boy?)

Also, I like Aramis for a male, Ken likes Athena for a girl. Are
there any Greek names that start with A? Something from mythology?

Anna,

You and the pup need to go to obedience classes....you need to learn how
to teach your pup and the pup will benefit from the discipline. Ask the
local shelter where classes might be found in your area. I would not
turn her back in....she will grow up to be a good dog if YOU are willing
to spend the time to learn about her and how to manager her.

				good luck!

To be honest Elaine, I haven't a clue as to exactly how many there
are right now, but I think it is under twenty.

    Lets see, there is ...

    Winston
    Monroe
    Tilly
    Joui
Kyrielle (who is currently in Virginia for breeding, does she still
    count???)
    Kalliste
    Kaitlin + five babies
    Lysentia
    Laci
    Limoges
    Maxi
Manny - will be relocating in a couple of days to Utah
Muffy - will be relocating to Saratoga in a couple of days
Blackie - who just went to his new home
Magic - who may be relocating in about a week

Plus, I just let three kittens and an adult relocate last week.
So, I guess it isn't as many as I thought. ;^)

But, I have a kitten coming back from the breeder that I gave Lysander
to (possiblygetting her in Medina next week), and a kitten coming
    back from a stud service.

Just wait till you start having Exotic babies, you won't be holding
    for long!

Jo, I'm not real good at coming up with names (I mean, my new kitten
is named after a vacuum cleaner but it fits him!). One thing I
found helpful when choosing Kelsey and Shelby's names was a book
called "What to Name the Baby." It has all types of human names
from the very normal to the very unusual. For female 'A's', I like
Amanda, Azriel, and Aisha. I can't think of any unusual male names
off the top of my head though! When I look through magazines at
pictures of the award winning cats, some of the names breeders pick
are really original and clever. Don't know how they do it... it
must get very difficult as more and more names are used throughout
the Fancy. The same must go for dogs too.

2777.13WR2FOR::CORDESBRO_JOFri Aug 18 1989 20:3216
Ken came up with a nice name at lunch today, Antionette. We could
call her Annie, which is short, sweet, and ends with the prefered
    ee sound.

This is tough. I generally don't have that much trouble naming
my kittens. I don't know why this is so hard.

    Jo

Oops! I have to take back that statement about not having trouble
naming kittens. Lyscentia's litter were known as Dark Toe, High
Runners, Grandma's Kitty, and The Boy until just recently. Now
they are called Malaysia, Muffy, Mai Le, and My Man. Their new
owners were much better at it than I was.

    >Also, I like Aramis for a male, Ken likes Athena for a girl. Are
    >there any Greek names that start with A? Something from mythology?

Well, there is Aristotle, Ares (god of war), Achilles,Adonis,Aeschylus,
Aesop,Alexander, Andreas, Apollo, Aristophanes, Aristides, Archimedes,
Ajax, Athanasius and Atlas for the boys. I've always liked Atlantis,
but it really isn't a name.

For the girls, there is Alexandra, Andrea, Artemis,Aphrodite in addition to
    Athena.

Of course, there is the one name that every Greek names their faithful
    canine companion:

Thanks for all the great suggestions Deb. I like Aristotle,
Archimedes, Achilles (Heel! Achilles, I can see it now :^D),
    Adonis, and Aramis for boys.

For girls, I forgot all about Aphrodite! So Aphrodite, Athena,
and Antoinette (Ken came up with that one at lunch).

Now I know how you named Argus.

That is great news!! Becky Jones is one of my favorites. She finaled
Limoges as an open in Oklahoma City, and that is one of the reasons
that I really regretted missing seacoast. Sounds like you may be
working on a CFA grand too. Good luck to you, and sorry that I
wasn't there to see Lil get her wins.

PS - most of my friends think I am nuts for having this many cats.
When they heard about the puppy, they called the men in the white
coats... if you don't hear from me for awhile, just call Oak Haven
and ask the the woman with the animal fetish!

If they're longhairs then why are they called Exotic SHORTHAIRS?
Or is this just one of those crazy things?
      Nancy Dc

2777.23WR2FOR::CORDESBRO_JOMon Aug 21 1989 19:3423
    Nancy,

Exotic shorthairs are judged in the longhair class in CFA cause
they are basically a shorthaired Persian. Since they are a shorthaired
Persian, and their standard is the same as the Persian one (with
the exception of the coat length), it seems to make sense. Longhair
judges will be more familiar with that body type than shorthair
judges would. Of course, once a judge becomes allbreed, it isn't
    that big of a deal.

Elaine, you can bet that I will be gunning for the Invitational!
Kalliste qualified last year and we went and had a great time.
Even made a final!!!! 10th Best Longhair Cat in a class of 273
longhairs. That kind of excitement doesn't come around everyday.

I am taking Limoges to the qualifier, she is the one that I want
to go to St. Louis. I also plan on entering Laci (if not preggers)
and Lyscentia to up the count. If one to five cats compete in the
breed, 1 cat qualifies. If six to ten cats compete, 2 cats qualify,
and so on. So, the higher number of entries in your breed, the
    better your chances of qualifying.

WOW! Meant the qualifier - where is yours?? Boy, I wish and hope,
but who knows - I'm gonna try hard - it's worth a shot. Of course,
Jovan (sp??) will be there with some realy beauties, but ya never
know! I think my little girl is pretty wonderful too.

Congrats on your Grand - way to go! I'm workin' on it - only 150
    more to go!

Nancy, in CFF, Exotics are shown in the shorthair class, but as
Jo says, in CFA, we show with the longhairs. That's why is very
difficult to make a final - you have to have a really wonderful
Exotic to beat the 10th best Persian. Lil made 10th Best Cat
in an Allbreed ring on Saturday also. I think she picked up
about 50 points this weekend - not too shabby!! 150 more to
    Grand!
2777.25WR2FOR::CORDESBRO_JOMon Aug 21 1989 21:1725
    Elaine,

I lucked out this year, our region's qualifier will be held in Oakland
CA which is only about an hour from home. Last year I had to make
the drive to Portland Oregon with 4 cats in the car (12 hour drive).

If you are in the North Atlantic Region, is your qualifier in
Pennsylvannia this year? That sounds like quite a drive.

There are lots of ways that your cat could qualify for the
invitational. If you make a final, you can qualify if the points
are enough, but you can also qualify in the breed rings. Like I
said, the more of your breed that are entered, the more chances
you have to qualify. Be sure to enter your qualifier early since
the regions are only allowing 450 cats this year.

I will be trying to qualify Limoges and also a blue point male kitten
out of Kalliste. The blue point boy is only 11 weeks old now, so
will just be four months old in time for the qualifier. I had so
much fun last year, that I really want to go again this year. Despite
the crowds, confusion, and the snow on Sunday, St. Louis was very
exciting. And to see all those top cats in one place at one time
    is a real thrill.
