2750.0. "Dopey needs a home" by FSHQA1::RWAXMAN (A Cat Makes a Purrfect Friend) Wed Aug 09 1989 18:00

Last year, I put in a note about two neglected cats needing a home
(#1329). Well, this year, only one of them does [needs a home].

The following story is a continuation of base note 1329, so it might
help to go back and read that note to make things less confusing:

My friend's sister was kicked out of her apt. by her abusive boyfriend.
He refused to give her the two cats and she never tried to go back
for them or call in the authorities to assist. My friend's sister
thought about them a lot, though, and decided to check into the matter
herself. What she found out through mutual friends was that the
boyfriend moved out, took one cat to the Worcester Rescue League
(which was euthanized) and abandoned the other one to the streets.
Luckily, my friend went back to his apt. several times after he
moved and finally found Dopey about three months later, very thin,
but alive. She took Dopey home and made a vet appt. Surprisingly,
Dopey checked out in good health. She was an unspayed female but
luckily was not pregnant (my friend's sister is an unspayed female,
got pregnant by her ex, had the baby, is living w/her mom and can't
    keep the cat).

My friend had Dopey spayed, felv tested (negative), and fully
vaccinated. Dopey is also declawed, though she was found that way
by my friend's sister several years ago.

My friend cannot keep Dopey as she already has cats and is in the
process of selling her house and moving. We are trying to find
Dopey a good, loving home. She has some personality problems due
to her turbulent life but is a real sweetheart nonetheless. By
problems, I mean that her nature is sometimes unpredictable. She
likes to be petted but if you approach her too fast or aggressively,
she hisses and bites. She really needs a lot of work but otherwise,
    would make a wonderful pet.

If you can help Dopey or know of anyone who can, please send me
    mail.

    Thanks,
    Roberta

2750.1How did he get the other cat back?WOODRO::RUSSOThu Aug 10 1989 19:209
    Hi Roberta,
I am a little confused. I read note 1329 and was under the
impression that one of the cats was removed from the posession
of this beast. How did he end up with both of the cats again?
Reading 1329 was very upsetting...it's hard to beleive that there
are people in the world like this. I guess I lead a pretty sheltered
    life.

    what a story.....
2750.3More on DopeyFSHQA1::RWAXMANA Cat Makes a Purrfect FriendThu Aug 10 1989 19:5031
Mary, there were three cats to begin with. One was removed and
placed in a home with a fellow Deccie; the other two remained with
the sister and her boyfriend because he refused to give them up.
I think the reason he would not give up the cats was out of spite,
not love, otherwise, Dopey would not be in this predicament today.

Dopey was brought to the hospital again yesterday. She had been
urinating all over my friend's house and the vet found that her
hip had at one time been thrown from the socket and healed. Who
knows how that happened but she had somehow dislocated it again
and was obviously in pain. They did some tests but found nothing
physically wrong. Dopey's indiscriminate urination problem is
definitely phsycological. Her litter box habits are inconsistent.
She really needs someone who is willing to spend a lot of time with
her. I cat-sat for her last week while my friend was on vacation
and Dopey was very upset that no one was home with her. She urinated
and defecated in the plants most of the week. She would sidle up
to me for attention and when I went to pet her, take a swipe or
hiss at me. It was definitely not a situation I was used to. However,
when she wants to be loving, she is a doll.

Dopey is a very pretty cat: a white long-hair with a grey tail
and grey markings on the top of her head. She has a long body and
a semi-oriental shaped face -- very striking to look at. I'm not
sure of her age: over 1 year, less than 5.

I agree with you Mary, it takes all kinds to make a world but *some*
    kinds, we could do without!!

2750.4*Dopey needs Understanding Parents*AIMHI::OFFENThu Aug 10 1989 21:5322
Dopey reminds me alot of Star, my daughters cat. Two years ago she was
the exact same. Today with love, patience, and a firm *Daddy*, she is
a very good and loving cat. She used to urinate on the bed when she
was upset but she hasn't done that in a year. She also would never let
any except *mom and dad* pet her. I was the one that rescued her but
she would never let me pet her after she was a year old and came to
live with me for a second time after being shunted from house to house.

Good luck on finding that right person who has the patience and love to
give Dopey the understanding that she needs.

I would try to help but with Thunder and Lightning having medical
problems and me working two jobs, I just don't have the time to devote
to her. Otherwise, I would probably jump right in and grab her.

Sandi (mom to Lightning, DejaVu & Thunder)

P.S.. I followed the base note faithfully so know the whole, horrible
    story.
