2728.0. "C.A.T. WON'T WORK" by BOSHOG::LEWIS () Wed Aug 02 1989 17:42

Does anyone know of an alternative for the C.A.T.? You see,
our newest edition LOVES to play in her water dish. She sticks
both front paws in and digs and splashes until most or all of the
water is gone.....all over her and the kitchen. It doesn't faze
her to get wet, so a squirt gun would not be of much use. I
almost hate to break her of the habit since it's pretty funny to
watch but she makes a mess of everything.

    Any ideas?

You would be suprised that even cats who love water don't like to
be sprayed with it in force when they aren't expecting it.

Several of my cats love water, but the C.A.T. still works wonders
for them. I don't think that they realize that it is water, it
just suprises them, and is unexpected, and that is why it works.

Gonezo also has a drinking problem. He paws and plays with the water
till it's all over the floor and then maybe decides to take a drink.
This is very recent - within the last few months - and my husband and I
get a kick out of it. We haven't found a cure for this - the cat has
us trained to clean up the spill.

Why not try a water bottle that is used for caged animals?

My Sasha also LOVES water. I have not seen her once drink
water from her dish. It has to be from the faucet.

But she does not like the C.A.T....like said before,
it's the unexpected quick shot that they don't like..
you could put milk in it and they still wouldn't like
    	it!

I've seen fairly large rubber mats with raised edges that you could put
under the food and water dish. It would contain the mess, anyway. I
don't know what kind of store carries them; maybe a megahardware store...

2728.6BOSHOG::LEWISWed Aug 02 1989 18:537
Thanks.....maybe I'll give the C.A.T. a try and see what happens.
Don't think the mat would be a good idea....she loves to play with
mats, shoes, her food dish and anything else she can find!

    'scuze me, but what's a C.A.T.?

Dickens likes to stick his paws in the waterdish and spill it,
but hates it if he steps in it by accident. Quite a humorous sight!

    Thanks,

    OK, so it's called a Cat(itude) Adjustment Tool . . .

    but what IS it?

At the risk of not sounding too ignorant I'll guess at:
    it's anything that works ????

Plant mister, commonly. Although recently when the mister
went the way of all things, we got one of the pump action
water cannons which shoots water up to 30ft! It doesn't
make noise so it doesn't startle them, but boy do they
get wet!!!!! And they remember! Plus my husband has
    a blast with it.

re: my husband has a blast with it

Ah yes, and therein lies the rub.......

Jack has much too much fun with it. He squirts the cats when they're
bad, when they're good (just to shake'em up a bit) and he squirts
his wife who takes it with much less grace than that cats!!!!!!!

Hmm, Nancy, I know *that* one! I've been thinking
of buying a water cannon of my own and using it
    for protection ;-) ;-) !!

Not to mention the fact that Ian sometimes gets
so caught up in the chase that in addition to the
cats, the walls, the drapes and the upholstry are
    also very wet!!!

Gee, I must have gotten Randy trained right on this. I just told
him the first time he uses the C.A.T. as a W.A.T. (wife adjustment
tool) would be his last. So far he has believed me.

Well, since my cat actually drinks with his paw (like a scooping
action), I decided this is what's comfortable for him, and why
change it. We have a huge kitchen, and the cats have their own
private area for eating and drinking, so the water doesn't bother
    us or them.

However, it's the occasional bowl of milk that gets really messy
(especially when he shakes his paw when he's done!).

What can I say? I'm a slave to my cats!

Aw, c'mon Nancy, I met your husband. He is such a *sweet, lovable*
    person. I just can't see him using a W.A.T.

Coelura used to like to play in water, too. But the squirt bottle
got her attention and *fast*. I'm trying to get our newest addition,
Shnapps used to tne "no NO SQUIRT" drill. He's catching on.

Can't give Coelura milk, though, not even watered down. Gives her
    the farts somethin' awful!

Hi Bob! Looks like Misty is quite the handful, eh? She is SO cute!
Couldn't you tell she was going to be trouble by the way she played the
day I brought her over to you?

Well, try the C.A.T. It should work on her. Also, I like the idea of
the hamster water bottle too. I've never tried it, but I've heard a
few people really like it much better than the regular water bowls.

    Good luck with her.

Hi Holly....Misty is definitely a riot! We haven't tried the
C.A.T. yet (gotta get one). She really loves to play in water...
I think I'll put a little in the tub and see how she likes it.
She's really been keeping Muffy busy and they've been getting
along great. She's had her shots and will be "fixed" around
    October.

It's back to the vet again tonight (Misty last night..shots) for
Muffy. She jumped on the toaster-oven last night and burned her
paw....she has a blister on at least one pad. Should be fun...
    she HATES the vet...

Oh, poor Muffy. Give her a hug for me and tell her it'll be all right.

Misty... What a doll. Just so that everyone knows, this is the Tortie
kitten that was dropped off in front of my house about a month and a
    half ago.

    RE: Misty in the tub.
A friend of mine told me a sure fire way of keeping a kitten busy. Put
her in the tub with a pingpong ball!! (Make sure you plug the drain
though so that the pingpong doesn't get stuck.). What a riot!!! I can
imagine that even the most rambunctious (sp) kitten would be exhausted
    after that!!

The ping pong ball sounds like a good idea Holly. I know, how
about a ping pong ball and a couple inches of water?? Probably
never get her out of there!
