2719.0. "black stuff around nose?" by CIRCUS::KOLLING (Karen, Sweetie, & Holly; in Calif.) Fri Jul 28 1989 20:06

    I'm mentioned before that I seem to have acquired a "half
    a cat". Little Bit was dumped in our neighborhood a few months ago,
    and my neighbors who belong to the feed-them-when-you-remember school
    of cat care "sort of" to use their words adopted him. Well, for
    some time he has been sleeping inside my house at night, because they
    don't let him inside since they had a new baby, and he's eating here
    as well. I left them a polite note a couple of days ago ("Have you
    adopted the cat? Would you mind if I got him an id tag? Would you
    mind if I took him for shots if you haven't already" and etc.) and
    got no answer.

    So, I'm about to take him to the vet for shots and to be altered. I
    kidnapped him a few months ago for shots and asked the (substitute) vet
    about some black stuff around his nose, and she said it was just because
    he didn't clean himself thoroughly. He still has it, although it
    doesn't seem to cause him any problem. Does anyone have any
    thoughts about what might be causing this?

   (As you can imagine, S&H are not thrilled. I have to referee a lot.
    I don't have room for 3 cats in the house, sigh. I am hoping that
    a friend will take him in the fall when her life circumstances
    clear up, although it will be hard to let him go.)

2719.1clarification, please!IAMOK::GERRYHome is where the Cat isFri Jul 28 1989 20:293
    Is the black stuff "discharge" or a discoloration???

2719.2CIRCUS::KOLLINGKaren, Sweetie, & Holly; in Calif.Fri Jul 28 1989 21:035
    It's not discoloration. It looks like a very small amount of
    "crud". Once when he came in from the rain, it was gone. It
    doesn't seem quite right to call it discharge either. It's not wet
    and there's not much of it and it doesn't "run". (sorry)

2719.3WR2FOR::CORDESBRO_JOFri Jul 28 1989 21:557
    So it is like inside his nostrils, and not on the fur around his
    nose? My Birmans get cruddy noses from time to time, I just act
    like a good mom and pick it off for them. They hate it, but I hate
    looking at it. I kind of think of it like the dry matter that you
    sometimes find in the corners of their eyes.

    We must be really grossing everyne out. It's not inside, but around
    the edges, not in the fur. I wonder why LB has it and not S&H.

2719.5allergies may be the problemIOWAIT::WILDEAsk yourself..am I a happy cow?Fri Jul 28 1989 23:197
Kitty hayfever may be the real problem. If LB isn't sick, I'd assume that
is the problem. Tabby, the siamese, always has a slightly runny nose and
it can get cruddy...they simply aren't as bothered by such stuff as we
are. 8^}

    LB is healthy as a horse, and growing and eating like one. Now I
    just have to teach him that trying to chase Sweetie off the bed is
    a NO-NO.

2719.7NRADM::CONGERWhat's ONE more cat????Mon Jul 31 1989 12:1313

    	Does it kindof `squeeze out' of the pores if you pinch
    	the skin a little bit? I've seen a cat with that before.
    	It seemed to be in the follicles around his nose, didn't
    	cause much irritation, just didn't look good. I can't
    	remember what the vet did (sorry, this is probably not
    	much help) but she did put him on an antibiotic for awhile.
    	This was when I was working at the animal hospital, and
    	I can't remember what they finally decided it was, although
    	the vet was quite puzzled...

    My Jasper had this when he was a little guy........I guess now that
    he's a big guy, he cleans himself better, and he's not at all STRESSED!
    But it was from his nose running (kitty stress), and it would dry
    in the corners of his nose. It would get really hard and black.
    Don't know why. I think he used to stick his nose in every dirty
    spot he could find. I would clean it out, but it would be hard
    as it was really dried on. But essentially it was from his runny
    nose. You little guy/big guy might have a runny nose from stress
    related to his life's situation.

    	My Alex & Brad have the same kind of stuff, I notice it better
    	on Brad because he is Beige rather than Alex because he is Black.
    	But I too like a good moomy just pick it off. Its around the
        nostrils right? I believe this is just like us, we have to blow,
    	But its hard for the lil guys to use tissues...8^)
    	As a matter of fact, the kids are going for their
    	physicals tomorrow, so I will ask the vet and let
    	you all know just what this "BLACK JUNK" is!

    Well They went to the doctors and the Doc says-he sees it a lot
    on certain cats but has no idea what it is.

2719.11eye problem, but similiar symptomsCSSE32::GRIMEPick a Cod, any Cod!Fri Mar 09 1990 15:0218
    My 7 year old white Persian has a similar problem as stated in the
    previous replies (especially .2 and .3) however, this is in regards to
    Pasha's eye, not his nose.

    I've noticed this for the past month or so. It is specific to his
    right eye only, his left eye is fine. He's recently been to the vets
    and received a perfect review, so I'm wondering if this is something
    new and where it came from? There does not appear to be any kind of
    infection. No sneezing. He looks and acts as healthy as ever. He is
    a very clean cat!

    I read all of the notes with the keyword EYE_PROBLEMS; some suggested
    that a change in litter brands can have some effect. His environment
    has not been changed at all, nor has his brand of litter.

    The only possible thing I can think of are my visit trips that take me
    away from home for three to five days at a time; perhaps he's been
    crying because he misses me? :^) But why only one eye????
2719.12CIRCUS::KOLLINGKaren/Sweetie/Holly/Little Bit Ca.Mon Mar 12 1990 21:405
    I'd take him back to the vet, unless the vet has already looked at this and said not
    said not to worry (it wasn't clear form your previous note). I don't think
    this is too serious, but the cta may be uncomfortable, and it
    may become serious if neglected.
