2682.0. "ARE YOU THAT SPECIAL PERSON" by MEMIT::ANKETELL () Fri Jul 14 1989 18:49

    Is there a special person out there who would think about adopting and
    8 month old Siamese kitten, chocolate point, who has just tested
    positive to leukemia?

    The kitten is presently located in a shelter called Just Cats, Inc. and
    they don't believe in euthanasia.

    The kitten shows no sign of illness, eats well, is very affectionate,
    needs company and is stricktly indoor kitten.

    The shelter would like to find a home for the kitten with another
    kitten or cat that also has a positive test as it loves to be with
    other kittens.

    If you are that special person please call Valarie at 508 285-3404 in
    Norton, MA. for more information.

    By the way, the Shelter will be responsible for all medical bills for
    the kitten. It desparately wants to find a loving home for this dear
    kitten for the rest of time it has in this world.

2682.1Try a retest??PENPAL::TRACHMANExoticSH=Persian in UnderwearFri Jul 14 1989 20:138
    I would think that they would wait a month or so and then
    try and retest this kitten to be sure it was positive before
    hanging la 'leukemia positive' label on the animal. A few
    weeks isn't that long to wait if they don't believe in
    euthanasia. From what I understand, a 'negative' is
    negative, but there can be 'false positives' ??

    Elaine, I think that there are no false positives with blood tests.

    Jo,

    I believe that you can get false positives with the Eliza test, but
    never false negatives. I believe the Hardy test is the one with no
    false positives.

    I may be mistaken, does someone know for sure??

    Yes, Cin, that's true - my vet always says that if it's negative,
     IT'S NEGATIVE, but if it's positive, try, try, try again. It
    sure is a relief to know that a negative is a GOOD NEGATIVE, but
    even if it's ever positive, folks have other chances to try again.

2682.5TESTINGMEMIT::ANKETELLMon Jul 17 1989 17:1114
    I don't know much about the testing process, but I should mention that
    the shelter first did a saliva test and that was positive and than did
    a blood test and that also showed positive. They will not euthanize
    this cat. They will keep it as long as it lives. They are just trying
    to provide a better quality of living for it than to keep it separated
    and confined to a cage.

    They would ideally like to find someone who would be willing to give
    the cat a home with possible another cat that has also tested positive
    or a home where she would be the only cat. Other than testing positive
    she looks and eats very well.

2682.6I want this cat!RTL::UTZWed Aug 02 1989 14:2310
    I would really like to adopt this cat. I tried calling the shelter but
    just get an answering machine, and I dont know if they answer their
    messages. If anybody know how to get in touch with a _person_ who can
    tell me how to get this cat, I can be reached at 603-881-4923. This
    account is my husband's so you can send him mail and he'll tell me the
    message if you can't call me directly. We already have one healthy,
    FelV positive siamese cat who is lonely since he lost his last buddy,
    and we would really like another buddy for him.

    There should be a "round of applause" for Eryn and David Utz and Caspar
    (who now has a new buddy). They just adopted this kitten and I wish
    them all the best.

    I always was a sucker for "happy endings".

2682.10another special person neededRLAV::BARRETTAdopt an adult pet from a shelterTue Mar 12 1991 02:1248
   Is there another "special person" out there?

   I just started volunteering at a shelter here in New Jersey a few
   weeks ago. There is a sweet and what we thought was old cat who
   stole my heart from the minute I saw her. She was a stray, very
   thin, and has cataracts in at least one eye. With good food and
   warmth, she has started putting on weight.

   I decided to adopt her, as our shelter is closing at the end of the
   month, and I was pretty sure no one would take her. (I am already
   over my limit for pets in my townhome complex, but I figured if I
   kept her in, I could get away with it.)

   On the way home, I took her to the vet, where I found she was
   positive for FELV. Needless to say, it just about broke my heart,
   especially as the vet strongly recommended I do not take her home
   with my cats.

   I am looking to see if someone can adopt this cat into a FELV+
   home, either as the only cat, or with another FELV+ cat. She is
   extremely affectionate. She is mostly blind with the cataracts and
   some scarring of her irises, but gets along just fine. Although we
   thought she was old, it turns out she is probably only 4 or 5 (the
   cataracts, iris scarring and thiness made her seem older - but she
   is filling out some now). Except for her eyes and the positive
   test, the vet thinks that she is ok (her teeth may need some
   scaling). However, it is possible that the scarring of her eyes
   has something to do with the FELV - the vet figured something along
   the lines that her condition as a stray was probably pretty poor,
   so that might have caused this type of reacion.

   I am willing to pay to spay this cat and get her vaccinations
   if someone will take her. She may last years yet, but then again
   she may not, as is true with all FELV+ cats. I am also willing to
   drive her north to Mass if you are up there.

   Seeing her in her cage at the shelter tugs at my heart. She will
   tug at yours too.

   Reply to this note or send me mail if you can save this cat.

   Thanks,

   Sue Barrett

   ps. Anyone who lives in NJ and is looking for a pet - our shelter
   is closing at the end of March - we have lots of cats and dogs who
   desperately need homes. Send me mail if you are interested.
