2672.0. "Keeping cats out of gardens" by CRUISE::NDC () Thu Jul 13 1989 13:53

    I know there's a note on this someplace, but I can't remember
    where.
My parents are have LOTS of trouble with the neighborhood
cats digging up their garden and using it as a litterbox.
My dad's pet way of chasing them off is to use a CAT filled
with ammonia & water. I've chewed him out more than once
about this telling him that ammonia is a poison and when he
squirts the cats and they groom themselves they ingest the
ammonia. I told them I'd try to find some good safe alternatives.
They poo-pooed the moth ball idea saying it doesn't work.

Do I remember something about using coffee grounds?
      Thanks
       Nancy DC

I just saw a product at SPags Garden shop which will supposedly
keep them out of the garden. I think it was a powder???

Moth balls are poisonous so I'm glad that they aren't useing them.
Have they tried dumping GROUND BLACK PEPPER all over the place?
this works pretty well for about 2 weeks or until it rains.

HOT, RED PEPPER has always worked for me for all kinds of
            creatures..

Thanks for the replies. I'll suggest the Pepper. My folks
live in Waltham so I don't think they'll be too thrilled with
driving to Spags, but I'll suggest it.

re: Moth Balls - what I actually recommend is wrapping the
mothballs in foil or some other wrapper and puncturing holes
in it so the smell can get out, but the animals can't come
in contact with it and it can't get into the dirt. I think
    that's relatively safe.

    Nancy-

If Spags garden shop has it, I'm sure others will too. I go there
frequently anyway and if they can't find it I'll get you some.

Thanks so much Michele. I just got off the phone with my Dad and
he says they're going to take a trip to Spags to find that powder.
I also told him about the Black and Hot,Red Pepper. I'll let you
all know how they make out.

2672.7Old pantyhose and mothballs?BIGSUR::GRAFTON_JIFri Jul 21 1989 20:367
Someone else once mentioned putting mothballs in the leg-only part
of old pantyhose. If you cut the legs off, you can dump in the
mothballs and tie the stocking leg in a knot. I haven't tried it
myself, but it sounds like it might work.

2672.8at the risk of being labeled an organic gardener ...WONDER::SKALTSISDebFri Jul 21 1989 20:557
Uh, if this is a vegetable garden, I'd be worried that some of the
toxic ingredients in the mothball/moth flakes/what ever would leach
into the ground, and could be absorbed by anything that you grew
there for the next n years (assuming that it didn't poison the
soil to the point that nothing would grow).

Its just a flower garden, Deb. That is an excellent point, tho.
