2653.0. "Cat on a hot spaghetti roof" by DELNI::GRACE (life is unpredictable; eat dessert first) Wed Jul 05 1989 18:51

I HAVE to tell this cat tale abut Bonkers that happened last week.
BTW, Bonkers is a domestic longhaired black cat that is 1-1/2 and the
greatest companion I've ever had. Loves to explore. Here's the story:

I was making the spaghetti the other night and the cat was real
interested in the long worms that I was dangling in front of him. He
pawed at the spaghetti a bit to bring it towards him to inspect it. I
was being cute and a bit mischievous myself that day, so I tossed the
strand onto his furry back. Well, you should've seen the sight I saw. He
totally freaked OUT! He started running all over the porch 'til a grabbed
him and saved him from the deadly serpent that was threatening his life.

At first, I thought it was a scream; then I felt a little ashamed. Hey,
who knew? That's my little buddy that freaked out. That stuff used to
be a riot. It's still kind of funny, but I see it through his eyes now,
and hate to betray the trust between us.

The fuury one never knew that it was I that tossed it on him. I think
he thinks that it was from the great beyond. All he knows for sure is
that I rescued him from a fate worse than death. We AREN'T telling him
    otherwise, R-I-G-H-T?!

I have to admit we have been known to get Kimi and Sura highly excited
by throwing bacon/ham rind on their backs (we don't do it any more...).
They would go quite crazy, racing around the room like you describe.
Kimi soon caught on that it was edible, and wasn't frightened after
one time. I think perhaps they think it is something snake-like.
All cats seem to know instinctively about snakes, even though theer
are none in New Zealand (not even in zoos). Racial memory, of course.

Sorry, shane, couldn't resist. If I were to assume that cats are
not imported (I know they are) then they would have evolved in NZ
without snakes and hence no racial memory. You mean REALLY no snakes
not even in zoos! If you tell me also no wasps, I might relocate.
Of course I cannot give a good argument as to why there should be some,
I had never thought about it. Australia has snakes.......
    interesting.

    Re .5/.6,

Yes Cathy, really truely no snakes, not even in zoos. One very mildy
poisonous spider. Unfortunately we do have wasps, they were accidently
imported in the 1940s in some cargo - from the US, I think, but
we don't hold it against you! Also no rabies, but we do have FeLV
    - fortuantely not common.

And cats were imported (yes, I know you already knew that...), as
were all other mammals except seals and two species of bat; i.e.
    no other native mammals.

    Shayne,

You've done better than Guam ... THEY do have snakes as well as GIANT
snails inported when the Japenese occupied Guam. They ate the coral
and thus were too bitter to eat, so now they are ALL over the island.
I did enjoy my two years though.

Sounds ideal ... actually from what I understand you have "the look"
of Scotland and parts of England, but without the *serious* winter.

Thanks for the reply. You never know until you ask!

    Cathy
