2579.0. "Worms, maybe again?" by WELKIN::STRONACH () Thu Jun 15 1989 20:16

Could anyone possibly shed some light on the problem Midnight is having?
He was recently dewormed -- round worms -- but he appears to be getting
the symptoms again -- which is wanting to eat constantly then vomiting it
all up. I feed him Science Diet Maintenance and Kat Kare dry. Regardless,
when he eats, he vomits. Then he comes to me and is adamant about wanting
to eat again. Usually, when we've gone this cycle, his vomit then begins
show the worms.

He's an indoor/outdoor cat -- only goes out for an hour when we come home
from work.

I called the vet and the nurse said we would try him again on the deworming.
Any ideas or does this sound logical?

Thanks in advance.

maybe try the yellow banana flavored stuff - given in does of once
a week for 3 weeks - or once a week for 2 weeks. Does he go out?
is he eating stuff outside like mice or ???

My son picked my the medicine last night and we went thru our usual struggle
of getting the pills into him -- yes he goes out on occasion and being the
hunter he is I'm sure that squirels, rabbits, etc. fall prey to him.
I realize that being an indoor/outdoor cat that I will have to continue
dealing with this.

I'll ask my vet about this stuff, although I'm not looking forward to
giving this stuff to the original tiger!! Thanks.

I had wormed my kitten along with all the other cats.
The kitten was underweight and didn't seem to be getting any bigger
    even after worming.

The vet said that by sharing a litter box with other cats, the kitten
might have become reinfected. I don't know whether you have other
    cats or not.

Have you had a stool sample tested? It could be he has not just
round worms, but maybe tapeworm or some other parasite.

This is next after his second dose of the medicine -- but its going
to really difficult as I do have four other cats.

I've dealt with roundworm a couple of times and I believe
this is one that can be difficult to eradicate. The
treatment I'm familiar with is to pill the cat twice, the
second pill following the first one by 3 weeks. It's
important to give this second pill on time. You should
then get a stool sample 2 or 3 weeks after the second pill
is given to see if it did the trick.

If the first round of pills doesn't work, and you don't
know/realize it for awhile, the worm has a chance to re-
populate to it's original level and when you have to
retreat, you're starting from square one again. After
you deworm him again, get a stool sample evaluated shortly
    afterward.

Elaine - The only time I've had the liquid banana stuff
was for coccidia. I have no idea what is really is.
    Do you?

wait a while the worm populationyou can
re-treat immediately and hopefully this second treatment
    will

That's what I was given for round worms - I forget what the
name of the stuff is. I usually do the house once a year.
No one goes out and I don't (I don't want to say this too
loud cause the fleas may hear me) have a you-know-what-
problem (you know, the "f" word), but the vet thinks
cause of the number of kids, it doesn't hurt to do them
    once a year.

2579.7Idea for getting the sampleYOSMTE::CORDESBRO_JOMon Jun 19 1989 21:3210
We used Albon for coccidia once, and it is a yellow liquid, although
I don't remember if it smelled like bananas. Some vets give Strongit
and some give Nemex for roundworms. They are not easy to get rid
of. I agree with the stool sample idea. I have found the easiest
way to get a stool sample is to feed the cat, then put it in the
bathroom with a sparkling clean litterbox. How many cats do you
know that will pass up a chance to be the first one in a newly cleaned
box? Especially in a multicat household.

2579.8Clean litterbox - all right!!WELKIN::STRONACHTue Jun 20 1989 13:0310
Here's the update -- Midnight gets his second dosage on Saturday -- then
10 days after that I have to get a stool sample -- thanks Jo - what a
great idea - that resolved my problem of making sure the sample was
Midnight's. I told my son he had "poopy patrol", now I'm sure he'll be
pleased it'll be this easy.

Thanks for all your help and let's hope we've got them this time.

... Kevin is taking our two for their first visit to the V-E-T
tomorrow. He was told to bring a stool sample, but that it
doesn't matter from which kitty; if either one has it, they
both do. I suppose that's possible, but it seems sloppy to
	me. Any opinions?

	Thanks,

*Usually*, if one has it they both do, but not always. I would
take a sample of each kitty, clearly marked with each's name.
Tapeworms are from fleas, so one can have them while another doesn't.
Most other worms are highly contagious in shared litterboxes.

Another tip for keeping the internal parasites down, be sure to
scoop the lumps out of the box a minimum of once each day. Most
of the parasites need to incubate in the stool for twenty four hours
before becoming infective. By scooping the stool out of the box,
you are removing the potential of worms being transmitted via the
    litterbox.

I didn't get a chance to see the replies until this morning, so
they went with just one sample. It had worms (not sure what type),
so they both get meds for that and for ear mites (no surprise to
me; Copernicus has been scratching the left ear a lot). Kevin said
they were very good at the vets, and didn't even fuss when they got
their shots! They were both very affectionate when they got home,
too -- surprising from Coper, who usually wants to be close, but
isn't into all that touchy feely stuff. Chrysalis is a hug junkie
	all the time.

Anyway, thanks for the comments, and the advice about the litterbox.
I've been scooping it every few days, but I'll try to do it daily
	now.

It figures, I get lucky .13

Our cat, Nikita, under 4 months old, has got worms, we gave him meds,
absolutely keep him out of the bedroom, but even after meticulous
housekeeping, litterbox cleaning, etc., is there a chance we (humans)
can become infected? If so, what to do?

Also, we feed him wet food (he won't eat dry or semi-dry food) and
he's got gargantuan flatulence and bad breath. Help!

    Hoping for a miracle!

2579.14welcome backWR2FOR::CORDESBRO_JOFri Jun 30 1989 21:2521
    Sabonn,

It depends on what type of worms he has. Some of them are easeir
for humans to get than others. Sounds like you have covered all
your bases and so, you don't have to worry. I don't think that
you need to keep him out of your bedroom though. Most of the types
of worms that you could catch from him would have to be ingested
by you. Now, most people will not knowingly ingest that type of
thing, but I think that kissing the kitten on the lips might not
be a good idea til your sure that the worms are gone.

About the canned food... since he is still young, his resistance
to dry may be related to it hurting his teeth. When I wean kittens
off of canned food and onto dry, I mix a couple of tablespoons of
canned with about 1/4 cup of dry and feed them that for a few days.
I gradually decrease the amount of canned food til they are eating
    all dry food.

PS - can you make it to the West Coast Feliners Party? It will
be the weekend of the 22nd and 23rd, but the actual date is not
    yet known.
2579.15It's been a long timeTOLMNE::PIGOTT_SAFri Jun 30 1989 22:3512
Thanks for responding so soon! I promise not to kiss him on the
lips, especially when his breath is so bleccchhh. I've been delaying
taking him to the vet until he's old enough to neuter, but with
all the physiological upheavals he's got, plus he needs all his
shots, I think I'll take him in as soon as possible.

He's another stray. We moved to Cupertino and we can have pets.
When Nikita showed up, we tried to find his family, but no one came
forward to claim him. We've decided to keep him, despite the
    egadosmellific fartronomical humongosplosions.

2579.16WR2FOR::CORDESBRO_JOFri Jun 30 1989 23:0412
    Sabonn,

If you are using over the counter worming medications, my
recommendation would be to trash those and take him and a stool
sample to the vet for a checkup. Those over the counter meds aren't
as effective as the prescription ones the vet gives. He will need
to have two shots, one now and then one three weeks later.

Congratulations on being able to have a cat now! That is great.
Can you come to the party?

I seem to remember that bad breath and, to put it delicately, intestinal
disturbances of a gaseous nature may be side effects of the worms..right?
I'm wondering because of a friend's question....

Well, as things would have it, Nikita is not feeling well. I think
it has something to do with the medicine I gave him. He is going
to the vet next week for the whole shebang; shots, neuter, (if it's
time) and checkup, etcetera. The poor guy doesn't have an appetite
at all. Plus, I've never seen a more finicky eater, even when he's
    well.

Point me in the direction of the information about the Party. I
    don't know when, where, etcetera.

    Thanks for everything!
